Free How to Draw a Traveler's Backpack, Art Lesson and Printable Worksheet

How to Draw a Traveler's Backpack is a drawing lesson inspired by my daughter's backpack. It was sitting by the door and looked like it had a story to tell, which is the essence of all pictures.

I hope you can use this lesson in a class or homeschool or for your own enjoyment.  It is not a hard project, and there is a lot of room for creativity.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Draw lightly at first so you can erase later.

Start with a basic box shape, use rectangles and parallelograms to create the front, top, and side nearest the viewer. This basic shape helps you organize your ideas. Draw it as seen at an angle, not just straight on.

Design the top to be partway open or at an angle like the backpack is overstuffed; this gives it interest. Use rectangles to establish where the pockets, straps, and flaps will go.

Consider making some things off-center, or at an angle on purpose, so it looks more worn out and uses.

Erase the extra lines and go over the lines that you want to keep.

The straps have buckles, and they can be tricky. Think of them as large rectangles or squares with missing pieces where the strap wraps over the buckle.

To make the letters even on the sign, divide the sign into halves and quarters, then draw the letters in the four spaces. Write each letter, then go around it to give it volume. Shade the areas around the letters.

Double the borderlines on the flap, pockets, and trim to give it the detail of a seam.
Add some items of interest like a drinking bottle or a map, or a book. Use double lines to draw a chord. Draw circles for buttons. Use a shield shape for a manufacture's emblem.

Use shading technique to give it more of a weathered and used look. Take your time with the shading; it is easy to overdo it. Choose to shade alternate areas, so there are areas in between that are not shaded for contrast.

I hope you draw a masterpiece!

It takes me hours or even days to create a worksheet like this, but I am glad to do it because I believe that when God gives you a gift, it is so you can be a gift to others. Thank You!

If you have trouble printing the worksheet, then CLICK HERE to visit the how-to-print page for some suggestions.

I worked on this worksheet for about a week before I was happy with it. I hope you are able to use it and have fun with it.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Draw lightly at the beginning so you can erase later.

Start by using basic shapes. Use a rectangle for the candle part. Use ovals for the base and holder parts.
Make the top like a triangle that angles down.

Use two or three teardrop shapes around the top for the drips of melted wax.

Design the holly leaves around the base by drawing each leaf with two lines that bend out and then touch at the tips, this helps them to look even. Give them all a direction as they go around the base.
Use some circles for the holly berries. Draw the holly berries in two or three clusters. use simple circles but have one behind the others for interest.

The holly leaves have a line down the center but it is not a straight line, it is slightly curved.

Draw the wick like an upside-down letter 'J.'  Use a teardrop shape for the flame.  Give the teardrop shape a little "S" shaped wave for interest.

Go around the holly leaves and give the edges a multi-scalloped shape by drawing curving lines that meet each other at the ends to make points.

Erase and clean up the extra lines.

Use a line to show the back edge of the table it is sitting on. The tabletop will be white so the holly leaves will have the background to stand out against. Use shading on the area above to give the candle a contrasting background.

Use shading technique to give it a three-dimensional appearance. Be careful when you add shading to the candle because it is supposed to be white or a light hue so it is easy to over-do it. There will be some shadow under the drips. Put a little shadow on both sides and keep the middle light. The shadow on the side should be gradual from lighter near the center to the darkest near the edge. Spend most of your shading effort on the holy leaves they are dark by contrast. There will be shadows under the leaves or the bottom. There will be shadows around the berries. The darkest shadow will be under the edge at the bottom of the holly leaves.

Sign your picture about an inch from the bottom so there is room for a frame.

I hope you make a masterpiece!

PRINTABLE NOTES

BEGINNING
Start by drawing lightly at first so you can erase later.

Draw a line for the back edge of the table that way it will not look like stuff floating on the page.

Use a guideline up and down for the center of each bottle then you can use it to keep the lines even on both sides.

Use basic shapes to form the composition. Circles for the curves of the bottles. Ovals for the bottoms and the wine glass. Use a ruler for the straight lines.

It makes the picture look more interesting if some things are in front and other things are half-hidden behind. Make it look like a landscape with a background, a middle ground, and a foreground. Group things in a cluster not in a row.

Use an eraser to clean up the extra guidelines.

Add details like shiny spots where the light is reflecting on the glass. Add wrinkles in the tablecloth. Add labels and corks.

My picture was done as a line drawing in marker but if you are using pencils or color media you can easily adapt this drawing to your media of choice.

PRINTABLE NOTES.
Draw lightly at first so you can erase later.
Start with a rectangle shape. Add a guideline down the center to help keep things even. Draw an X from the corners through the center, this will be another guideline.

Draw an oval for the top and the bottom. Use the corners of the rectangle to help keep the oval from being lopsided.
Draw a half circles, one for the top and another for the bottom of the glass. It may help if you find a jar lid to trace around, Do not be afraid to use tools like rulers and tracing around circles every artist uses tools.

Draw four guidelines for the spindles on the sides. Use a circle in the center with an oval above and below each circle to form the shape of the spindles, then go around them to give smooth flowing lines.

Draw the shiny spots on the glass. Go around the half circles and connect them with curving lines.
The sand in the bottom looks like a triangle. The sand in the top is a "U" shape.
Add details like edges to the top and bottom.

Use shading to give the effect of roundness and depth. The far spindles are darker since they are in the shadow.
Take your time to add texture to the sand and long lines for the wood on the top.
Add a background like a tabletop.

Sometimes it takes me hours, but I create these how-to-draw worksheets, so that I can give back because I believe that when you have been given a gift, it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you.
Thank you!

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

BEGINNING
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later. Draw the bowl first as an oval with a broad "U" shape below it. Draw the apples as three or four round shapes in the bowl, and one outside the bowl for interest. These circles do not need to be perfect in fact if they are lopsided or narrower at on end it will be more realistic.

DEVELOP FORM
The bowl has an inside and outside edge on the lip so draw a second oval line inside the first oval line this makes the bowl look it has thick edges.

The apples have a stem that comes out of a dimple. Draw the stem with two lines starting a little below the top edge of the apple. The lines should curve slightly and end with a little circle that touches both lines. The apples have shiny areas so outline them before you start to do any shading.

SHADING
Use shading to give the apples and the bowl their roundness.

Tips for How To Draw a Still Life, Free Printable Worksheet.

How to draw a still life drawing lesson and printable worksheet.

This is a worksheet with some tips that will help you to draw a basic still-life.  Parents, teachers, and home school families may print this for personal or class use. It is very a simple summary of a still life drawing and is good as an introduction to the subject.

This worksheet is free but your gift will be appreciated. Use the DONATE tab or the Paypal button. Thank you.

If you have trouble making it print see the HOW TO PRINT tab above for some suggestions.

Tips for Drawing a Still Life With Jars Worksheet by MrAdron.

YOU MAY PRINT THE PROJECT NOTES BELOW.

BEGINNINGS
Start slow. For your first project select three or four items that share a theme. In our example, we have glass jars but it could be four cups, or four apples, or four tools, etc.  Arrange the subject. Do not get too tidy; put some things in front and some in back. Leave a little space between so things are not too crowded. The things in front will be lower on the page.
Look it over and decide if it is interesting.  Avoid items that create barriers to the eye like something with long lines that dominate the arrangement. The eye should rove around the subject.

PRE-SKETCH
Do a rough draft of the drawing loosely. Don't try to be perfect just get things in place on the paper. Look for the shapes of objects and use the basic shapes of squares, rectangles, ovals etc. to compose the parts of the drawing.

MAPPING
Our still life is of glass jars. We want to catch the shiny spots, so we draw them early as outlines, that way when we are shading we don't shade over them. The darkest areas are determined and the first layer of shading is applied.

DEVELOPING DETAIL
Sketch in the details like the far sides seen through the glass or the raised edges.

SHADING
Use the side of the pencil shade in areas. Do all the light areas first then go over the darker areas. Look for reflected shadows and shadows inside shadows. Remember to not shade over the highlights that you mapped out before. Use a blending stub or a tissue to blend the shadows and give the glassy effect.

Shading is the biggest job in the drawing so take your time and take a few breaks.

Or try the link below to an updated image file (PDF) that may work better on some printers. You have to copy and paste the image to a Word Doc on some printers and then print the Word Doc.

Candles can add something to a picture and are full of meaning. The trick is to get everything. Even if you have something on one side, you have something that matches the other, especially if you have a fancy candlestick.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Begin with a line going up and down to be a "center" guideline that you will use as a reference, but you will erase later. It is OK to use a ruler to get the lines straight.

On each side of the guideline, put marks to indicate the places where the candle and candlestick have shape. Don't draw the shapes just yet; right now, you want to mark the places- like making a plan. The marks must be the SAME DISTANCE on each side of the center guideline. If the mark for a curve on the candlestick is an inch on the right side, there should be a mark that is one inch on the left side.

Use circles to make the curves of the fancy candlestick; make sure the circles are the same sizes where they mirror each other. Part of the circles will get erased later, so draw lightly.

Connect the marks with up and down lines.

The bottom of the candlestick has a curve going down and out like an upside-down rainbow but slighter.

The candle has drips at the top; they look like teardrops.

The flame is two curving lines that touch at the top, the flame looks like a teardrop, but one that is bent like an "S." And the wick looks like a question mark.

Add decoration to the candlestick using dots, circles, or diamond shapes.

Erase the extra lines.

Add shadows.
