Below is a Free How to Draw Flowers by the Rural Fence Worksheet. 

This picture was inspired by something I saw when walking my dog. There was a fence beside the path we were on, and some flowers were growing through the cross pieces of the fence. I took a picture of it with my cell phone and later created some art inspired by the scene. It is a simple and easy project, but it can be very lovely when it is finished.

PRINTABLE NOTES

During the beginning stages draw lightly so you can make erasures and corrections later on. 

The fence starts out as a series of long rectangles. Two are verticle and four are horizontal, they do not need to be perfect. 

Do not draw the fence perfect, give it some crooked and bent parts like something that has been outside for a long time might look. 

Use circles and half-circles to place where the flowers will be in the picture. Some of the flowers are facing out to you and some are facing up, the ones facing up look like half circles. Draw small circles for the center. Put some flowers in front of others.

 

Draw the petals from the center to the outer circle. Use two lines, one for each side. Use a guideline to keep the petals going straight. then erase the extra lines.  

The leaves in the shrubbery below the flowers are like the letter "V" but rounded. 

Use short choppy lines to give the wood a rough texture.

Use the shading technique to give the picture depth. The far trees are a light gray, the distant shrubbery are a darker gray. The darkest areas should be the closest like the side of the post and the underside of the cross pieces. Shade around the leaves and the flowers but leave the flowers and leaves white so they stand out. 

Sign and date your work about an inch from the bottom so there is room for a mat and frame.

I tried to make the lesson interesting and took a few risks with the composition. The flowers are not in a neat tidy row, and they are intentionally a little ragged as if they were past their bloom; after all, that is real life, and a picture should tell a story.

LESSON NOTES

BEGINING

Start by gathering your reference materials, like favorite pictures of tulips from cards, magazines, or calendars. Use the pictures for ideas and design. 

In my illustration, I have some tulips taller than others, some are in front,   and some are behind. It all makes it look interesting. You may want to do some rough sketches first to get your ideas right.

Lightly sketch your design. Keep it loose, rough, and quick.  Just some circles for the flowers and lines for the stems and leaves. Keep it light so you can erase parts later.

DEVELOPING FROM

After you have the basic design the way you like it then go over the best lines and erase the ones you do not want.

FLOWERS

The tulip flower looks like a bowl or cup. In our illustration, we are looking down into the flower at an angle. Draw a curved guide-line across the circle that you drew for the flower. The guideline is the edge fo the nearer leaves of the flower's cup shape. 

Divide the cup shape into petals by drawing two or three lines down from the guideline and from the back edge of the circle.   

The edges of the flower is a little jagged so draw sawtooth-like lines on the edge of the guide-line and the top circle line. 

Erase the extra lines.  

SHADING

Shading may be the most important part of the picture. Shadow is determined by the direction of the light source. If the light is coming from the left the shadow will be on the right. I suggest that you do all the shadow at once at the end. Work the shading over the whole picture not one area at a time, because if you start at one spot and work out it may not look even. There are shadows in shadows and some shadows near the edge are lighter and some shadows farther from the light may be darker. 

Use shade to separate flowers into those in front and those behind. 

Be sure to sign and date your work about an inch or so from the bottom so there is room for a frame.

Draw lightly at first so you can erase later on.
Do not worry if you can't draw straight lines this is an old beaten-up wheelbarrow so straight lines do not matter.

BEGINNING
Draw a line for the ground so that the wheel and the back legs are on the same level.
Draw a simple circle for the wheel. From the center of the wheel to the back draw two lines like a sideways V for the handles.

On top of the sideways, V for the handles, draw the box for the wheelbarrow.  It is like two rectangles, a long one going back from the wheel to the handles and a smaller one for the front.
The back end curves downward to the handles.

DETAIL
Draw the lines for the sideboards.
The back of the handles are rounded and turned downward.
There are two legs at the back for it to stand on, draw them as straight lines going down to the line for the ground but they do not need to go straight.

THE FUN STUFF
Draw circles to design where you want the flowers to be.
Use circles inside circles for the centers and draw the petals between the circles.
Don't make them all the same size, make some big some medium and some small.
Make some to have four petals and some to have many petals.
Give some big centers and some smaller centers.

Fill the spaces in between the flowers with leaves.
Make some leaves big and some small.
Add grass to the ground below it and a few more flowers.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

Draw lightly at first so you can erase later.
Start with large circles for where the flowers go to organize your picture. Put little ovals for the pods and small circles for the buds.

Divide the flower circles in half for the two parts of the flower.

The leaves are like long curving rectangles. Draw small ones near the buds and large ones near the flower. Put some behind the flower and one or two in front of a flower to hide a small part of it.

The flower is like a bell shape in the bottom part. There are three parts of the pod that curved upward; the one in the middle looks like an upside-down letter "V" The two on the sides are curved lines that end in points. The flower has crinkly edges, and there are petals that lap over others, so draw a curved line to show one or two of the other petals.
There are little hairs that come out of the bottom of the flower; draw them as two lines, each with one in the center that is longer than the others.

Go around the leaves and give them zigzag saw-tooth edges. Little stems go to the flowers, buds, and pods. Use two lines for each stem.

Use shading to give the effect of contrast depth by going dark in the background and leave the flowers white.

BEGINNINGS
Draw lightly so you can erase later. Draw a large circle just a little above and to the side of the center of your paper. Draw a small circle in the center of the large circle as a reference point. Use two lines for the stem.

The petals of the Hibiscus flower are like a pinwheel, where each petal overlaps the one on the right. There are five petals. Draw them as sweeping half-circles starting from the center and going out to the edge. Draw two lines for the stamen (the part that sticks out of the center). Draw triangles to get the placement of the leaves behind the flower and on the stem.

DEVELOP FORM
The petals have crinkly edges, so go over the petals and give some crinkles. The leaves have some jagged edges, so go over them and give the jagged edges.

There are vanes in the leaves. One goes down the middle, draws it as a thick line, and then some go out to the edges and draw them as lighter lines.

SHADING
The shading is an important part and so take your time with it. The leaves are all darker than the flower. The dark on the leaves is the darkest nearest the flower and more light near the edges.

The flower is darkest in the center, and there is a shadow under the overlapping right edge where each overlaps the other.

The stem is darker on one side.

LESSON NOTES YOU MAY PRINT

BEGINNING
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later. Use tools like a ruler and something circular to trace around for the wheels.

Draw a line for the ground so the leg in the front and the wheel are on the same plane.

Use simple shapes to start. A circle for the wheel. A rectangle for the cart body. Parallelogram for the side of the awning and for the narrow back end.

The awning is a little bigger than the cart.

The far wheel is a little to the side of the nearer wheel.

There is a post from the cart to the awning. Draw it from the center back to the tip of the awning.

DEVELOP FORM
The awning has stripes. Before you draw them use guide marks so they are even and in order. There are half-circles at the bottom they connect to the guide marks.

The wheel has a hub it is one or two circles in the middle. There are eight spokes. Use guide-marks to make them even think of it as a clock and start with the top then mark the bottom. Next, mark the right and the left, after that do the ones in between evenly. After you have marked the off draw the spokes from the hub to the rim.

Fill out the post by drawing lines on both sides so it is thick and draw the side pieces.

Draw the tubular shapes of the buckets.

FLOWERS
TAKE YOUR TIME! Do not hurry as you draw the flowers. Make different types. Some will look like spiky stars. Some will look like popcorn, some will look like funnels, some will look like small circles. Make the leaves like wavy triangles.

This could be a very colorful picture. Have fun.

LESSON NOTES

BEGINNING
Remember to draw lightly at first so you can erase later.
Start by using some basic shapes to form the composition. Two large ovals begin the flowers, put two small ovals in the center of each. They are guidelines that you will erase later.
The vase is three ovals one above the other and then lines connecting them; curved lines between the top two and straight lines between the bottom two.

DEVELOP FORM
     * The petals are each drawn with two lines from the center oval and the outer oval.
     * There are no more than nine petals; do not make them perfect, give a few twists and bends that will look more real.
     * The tips of the petals have a jagged sawtooth edge shape like the letter "W"
     * The stem is two lines going down into the glass vase. There is a break where the water confuses the light.

DETAILS
     * Draw some shiny spots on the glass vase before you draw the stems inside and the water line inside.
     * The glass will show the backside of the table, but it will not be straight or even because the glass is curved and the water refracts the light.
     * The center of the flower is fuzzy- use dots but give more dots in the very center.
     * The petals have veins and lines going down them.

SHADING
     * The light through the glass on the back will be brighter so give the tabletop all-around a little shading for contrast.
     * The center where the petals connect will be darker.
     * One side of each stem will be darker.

Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later.

The poppy is a cup-shaped flower with four petals. Start by drawing two ovals on the paper, one will be slightly behind the other. Mark the center in the middle of each.

Begin to define the four petals by dividing the circles into sections, use sweeping "U" shaped curving lines, do not worry about being even. One petal on top looks like a Chinese fan. The petals on the sides look like curved lines. The petal on the bottom looks like a ballerina's dress.

The edges of the petals are wavy. In the middle are little fingers that come up draw them at the center circle.

The stems are not straight. The leaves look like groups of feathers pointing up.

BEGINNINGS
Start with the flowers. In our example, there is one that is facing the viewer and two that are viewed from the side. Begin with basic shapes. Draw lightly so you can erase later. The flower facing the viewer is a circle, but the ones that are viewed from the side are a half-circle. The center of the one facing the viewer is another circle, but the center of the ones that are viewed from the side is more oval.

THE FLOWER
There are about 13 petals on the Black-Eyed Susan. Draw each one as two lines going from the center to meet at the outside of the circle on the one facing the viewer or the bottom of the oval for the ones viewed on the side.

DEVELOPING THE FORM
The stems start together at the ground and are two lines that are slightly wider apart at the bottom and gradually come closer together at the top. The leaves are bigger at the bottom and thinner at the top. They weave in and out behind and in front of the stems. The leaves are spear-shaped.

DETAILS
Add shadows to give depth and shading to give roundness. The center has bumps that are dark. Give texture to the soil.

BEGINNING
Start with three large circles, you can do more or less as you want. Just get them in place in the center of your picture, have them overlap a little to be interesting. In the middle, draw three tiny circles close together.

DEVELOPMENT
The flower has five petals. Start with the bottom one, it is shaped like a bushy beard on an old man or a triangle that is roundish. Next, draw the ones on each side they are like elephant ears. Last draw the two on the top, the top left is first and the top right is last it is behind everything.

LEAVES
The leaves are like triangles with bumpy sides. Start with a line down the middle and then draw the sides. Draw them behind the flowers.

DETAILS
The flower petals have jagged edges. There are veins or wrinkles that go through the petals. They have a dark spot on the lower three petals, use shading techniques to show this. Do not worry about making it perfect it is the randomness that makes the flower interesting.

The pot is just two lines going down to a level point and a curving line that connects them. Add shadow around the sides and below the flowers.

DESIGN STAGE
Lightly draw two or three circles to place the blossoms where you want them on the paper. Make them interesting and not in a row. At the center of each circle, draw a smaller circle. The cherry branch is mostly straight, so lightly sketch a line going across the blossoms for the branch behind the blossoms. Place two or three leaves behind the blossoms coming off of the branch.

DEVELOPING THE DESIGN
There are five petals on the blossom; use five lines to divide the circles into even sections. Inside each section, draw a teardrop-shaped petal. The petals should not touch each other.
The center of the flower is a circle of short fuzzy hairs; just draw short wavy lines in a row on the circle.
Draw little circles halfway between the ends of the blossoms and the center. Connect the circles to the center with a thin line.

BRANCH AND LEAVES
The branch has little bumps where new growth is happening; draw one or two little bumps on the branch. The leaves have a fold in the middle, draw it as a line, and then use a shadowing technique on one side of the line, so it looks like a fold. The branch is darker than the leaves.

BEGINNINGS
Start by drawing a light rough sketch to get the project centered on the page. Sketch a large circle for the flower at first and a short cylinder for the pot. The stem is just a double line that curves one way then the other.

DETAILS
Draw the flower in two steps the first is the larger petals. The first two start as two curving lines like large parenthesis on the outside edge, then connect with a line between them shaped like the letter U at the top and an upward curving lines below. Behind the first two petals are three petals shaped like rounded diamonds, their points form a triangle.

The flower has a center made of three leaves, two that curve out and back in above and one curves down and back up below. Start with three inward curving lines that almost make a circle. Connect the lines with the lines that curve inward and back out. There is a little upward edge on the bottom petal that looks like the letter U.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Add large leaves that are drawn with two curving lines that come to a point. Shade the flower pot to give contrast.  Shade the background to make the flower stand out.

BEGINNING
Start with some circles that are all the same size and one oval for interest. (Draw these lightly so you can erase them later.) In the center, draw a light circle.

FORM
There are four petals like a cross; they are like narrow hearts, draw them inside the circles. Draw the top one first, then the bottom one next, then one on the left and the one on the right last; that way, they are even. Don't try to make them perfect or the same because, in nature, nothing is perfect; some are twisted or wilted.

BRANCHES AND LEAVES
The branches are curved from above; they go down and up under the flowers. Draw two lines, one for each side.

The leaves are teardrop-shaped in twos and come off of their own little branches. Put some leaves behind the flowers for realism.

In the center are a lot of little dots sticking up.

SHADING
Shade the area around the flower so it the only thing left white or color their ping. The leaves are bright green, and the branches are red-brown.

The flowers are trumpet-shaped, but we will draw most of them facing forward. Draw a few circles all the same size in a group. Have some apart by themselves and a few touching and one or two overlapping.

In the center of each circle, draw five lines like a star, then connect the lines into a lead. Put a circle dot in the center of the star, at the edge of the circle where the star points, draw a little arrow mark. On each side of the arrow, mark draw a curved line going down repeat the pattern all the way around the circle. Shade in the inside of the star but keep the dotted white. It doesn't need to be perfect since the edges are ruffled.

The leaves are thin like short blades of grass and are crossed in opposite directions. Put shadows between the leaves.

Give them a home in a planter or garden.

The urn looks like a goblet or cup on a stand, as seen from slightly above.

BEGINNINGS:
Start by lightly drawing the urn (but save the flowers for last). The main part of the urn is like a giant letter "U" with an oval across the top. Most of the oval will be lost later on but is drawn for reference.  Draw a line going up and down the center for reference to keep things straight. The stem part underneath is curved inward, use the guideline to keep it even.

DETAILS:
There are decorations around the edges. The decorations look like leaves or scallops or you can add your own design. Start drawing the decorations from the middle, go back and forth on each side and go outward to the edges.

The base is a small square but the back is narrower than the front.

The rings on the side are up to you, you can put something else on the side or leave it off.

FLOWERS:
The flowers and plants fill the top and spill over.
There are some grass blades that go up and out.
There are some small leaves that look like upside-down teardrops.
There are some medium and large leaves that look like hearts.
There are some flowers that are shaped like popcorn.
There are some little flowers that look like tiny softballs
There are some plants that have leaves hanging off of a stem.

Fill the areas between the leaves with lines, shadow, and texture that will make it look really full of plants.

Add shadow to the picture to give the urn roundness.

Make the outline of the basic shapes. To give the picture freshness, scribble the outline loosely.

The leaves are large and look like floppy spades or hearts with splatter edges, draw the splatter edges as a wavy and choppy line. Put one leaf in front and one behind the grapes. The leaves have vanes that all start at the same spot near the top. Draw these as a straight line.

The grapes are larger at the top of the cluster. Put some halfway behind the others. Put a shiny spot in each grape and a shadow beneath each grape. Shadow in the grapes that show a little behind the others. Take your time with the grapes, and it will look good.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES.

The basic flower shape is a cone with six tapering triangles for petals at the wide end.

BEGINNING
Start by lightly drawing the cone shape. Don't make anything perfect, the randomness of the shape is more realistic.  Draw a circle or oval at the wide end of the con to be a guideline. There is a short inside edge, draw it as a short curved line a little way in. On the edge of the circles and ovals draw six marks to indicate the points of the six petals.

DEVELOP FORM
Using the guidelines draw the sic petals like triangles, one or two will end at the short inside edge line drawn earlier. The other five will go a little way down the cone. Give the triangles a little curve outward.

DETAILS
There are five little balls on stalks inside the cones some are longer than others.

The flowers usually come off of one stalk, draw the stalk or stalks as two parallel lines.

Draw the leaves last. They are like blades of grass- long and thin.  They come off of the stems and are tangled up, keep drawing them until you have a lot and they fill up all the space near the stalks.

The flower is white, and the leaves are very deep green.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

The iris flower is a little random so we develop the composition loosely with a scribbling technique then go over the lines to clarify the drawing.

Start by scribbling lightly so you can erase it later. Begin with a guideline up and down and another going across it vertically near the top to keep things even.

Lightly draw a large egg-shaped circle at the top where the two guidelines cross. At the center of the cross draw the first down-pointing petal, it is shaped like an upside-down teardrop. On both sides of the flower draw, the downturned petals. Above that draw an oval on the guideline going up and down. Around the oval draw a circle these form the basis of the petals.

Scribble in the stem and blade-like leaves.

On the petals add folds and wrinkles by scribbling random circles and lines. Work the wrinkles into the edges so the shape is irregular.

Look at the best lines and go over them to make them stronger, broader and darker.

Erase any extra lines.

The iris can be any color but most often it is violet.

This is not a hard project as one would think; once you recognize the basic and simple shapes you just put them together and add details.

Start with a large "U" shape, with a small circle beneath. Draw this lightly so you can erase as needed later on. Outline the stem by drawing two lines one for each side of the stem.

Lightly draw the outline of the three leaves, they almost make a cross. The leaves are shaped like teardrops. For interest put one of the leaves behind the rose or the stem.

Going back to the rose petal, use three curved lines to make the petals, one going down from the left top, one starting halfway up from the first and the third going up to the top right. Draw three short wiggly lines on the top, together they will cross the top. There are four leaves under the blossom, they are like triangles going out and away with a little curve.  Now you may need to erase a few of the lines you did before.

The three leaves have veins going down the middle and veins going out to the sides from the one in the middle- don't make too many. The edge of the leaves have points all the way around draw about seven or eight on each side.

Use soft grey shadow and just a little dark grey shadow on the shady edge to make the rose look round.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

BEGINNING STEPS
Our daisies are drawn from the side view. Begin with a large oval with a smaller oval on top. Make nine or ten marks on the lower edge this is to keep the petals even. Draw the petals to these points. The petals are two lines curving toward each other. Erase the extra lines.

STEM
The stem is two lines give them some slight curve. The leaves are long and skinny, They are on opposite sides of the stem one above the other.

LEAVES
The leaves start out as one long line. Then draw two lines on each side of the long line make these two lines with zig-zag patterns starting at the stem and curving away then curving toward the first line in the center. Put some leaves behind others.

DETAILS
The center of the flower is fuzzy use dots and shadows to give them texture.

Color the background and all around the flower so the flower looks really white. Make the background darker toward the bottom of the picture.
