PRINTABLE NOTES

GUIDELINES
Start with two guidelines to keep things even. One guideline goes across the mouth and one up and down in the middle.

BEGINNING
Draw a small rainbow arch for the bottom of the top lip, so the mouth looks a little open.
Draw a small "V" for the middle of the top of the upper lip
Draw a very wide "U" shape for the bottom lip. The bottom lip is bigger.

DEVELOPING THE SHAPE
The top of the bottom lip is not straight; Draw a wide slight "U" in the center of the lower lip top edge. Draw a slight upward curve on both sides.
Draw the sides of the upper lip.

Erase the guidelines and clean up the basic shape.

SHADING
The shading is what gives the lips their fullness and roundness. All the light should come from the upper side. The shadows should be on the opposite and lower sides.

The upper lip is mostly in shadow. The bottom lip has a strong shadow below and a little shadow on the top edge. There are light areas in the middle of the lower lip and on the side of the upper lip where the light hits it.

Draw the teeth last. Keep them simple, or else they look dirty.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
The basic shape of the head in the 3/4 view is like an egg or teardrop upside down and tilted to one side.
Lightly draw guidelines down the vertical axis of the face, this will be almost on the outside edge at the chin and about20% back from the outside edge at the top.
Lightly draw a guideline for the eyes about halfway from the chin to the crown of the head; this guideline will extend back for the top of the ear.
Halfway down from the eyes, draw a guideline for the nose; this guideline will extend back for the bottom of the ear.
Halfway down from the nose, draw a guideline for the mouth.

EYE
The eye socket and cheek are like a cut into the outside edge draw it like a pointing to the guideline for the eye.  Draw the eyes right on the guideline. Take your time to make sure they are even so that one is not higher than the other. The eye on the outside is touching the > of the eye socket.

NOSE
The nose is almost like an upside-down number seven that starts at the point where the guidelines for the eyes cross and go down to the outside line and back across the guideline and up.

MOUTH
The outside edge of the lips touches the outside edge of the face. The top is straight line-shaped like an uneven M, and the bottom is a curved line like a U.

THE EAR
The ear is almost all the way to the back of the head. The top of the ear is no higher than the guideline for the eye, and the bottom of the ear is no lower than the guideline for the nose. The ear is like a peanut that is wider at the top and smaller at the bottom with a large letter S inside.

CHIN
Add in the chin with a line going down from the lips and back to the jawline. The jaw takes a sharp turn up to connect to the bottom of the ear.

HAIR
Keep the hair simple. The hairline starts halfway from halfway between the eyes and the top of the head; it curves across and down to the ear. Draw the outside edges of the hair around the head.  Do wavy lines or spiky lines to give it character.

NECK
The neck at the front starts a little back of the chin; it goes down and our forward. The neck at the back starts halfway behind the ear.

SHADING
Use shading to give the face character and roundness.

This is a simple project for a young artist. The face is a teenager in three-quarter view and turned upward slightly, the eyes are looking heavenward. I drew this for my own art students as something to give them at the end of a class so they can do it at home, or as something for when there is extra time in class.

Be sure to see the project notes below.

There is more than one way to draw a face, so I have kept this project simple for the young artist. Drawing a good face takes practice, so don't give up. Draw a person every day, and soon you will be good at it. I have other projects like this, so come back often and try some more.

PRINTABLE NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Start with a basic shape of the head without the hair, it looks like an egg with a narrow point for the chin. Use guidelines to help keep things straight. One will go down the face but a little to the left side. Draw another guideline for the eyes, this will be halfway from the top of the head to the chin. Draw another guideline halfway from the eyes to the chin for the nose, and a last halfway from the nose to the chin for the mouth.

DEVELOP FORM
The face is turNED three-quarter view so the left side shows the brow, the cheek the curve of the upper jaw, and the lower jaw. These are lines that start at the hairline first going outward a little for the eyebrow, then inward slightly for the eye socket, then out a little farther than the eyebrow for the cheekbone, then in and down with a bump for the upper jaw and teeth, last it curves down under the chin and curves up to the right jaw hinge just under the right ear.

DETAILS
The eyes are looking up so draw the top of the eye like an arch or a rainbow. The bottom is straight with a slight curve up. Use some small coins to trace around for the iris of the eye so they both match. The pupal of the eye is far up and only a little of it is showing.

The nose is a curving line like a backward "S" but keep it thin. The bottom of the nose is turned up, but don't draw it use the shading technique for it.

The mouth is far to the left since the face is turned away. The top lip is thin and mostly in shadow so use shading technique to draw it. The bottom lip is two ovals in the middle and then stretched out at the ends.  Do not make both sides of the mouth equal since the face is turned away, so the left side is smaller and the right side is longer. the mouth almost touches the far edge of the face. Perspective does all this.

The eyebrows are simple and straight.

Draw the hair last, it is short almost boy-like. The armor has straps at the top and pieces that fold over on the shoulder, draw rectangles and triangles for these. She was often shown with a wooden cross around her neck or a banner.

Use a guideline up and down to keep the face even on both sides. Draw a circle for the top two-thirds and a large "U" for the jaw. Use a guideline across about halfway down to keep the eyes level.
Draw the rectangles for the glasses early on in the project. They are on the cheeks and low on the nose.
The cheeks are like bracket symbols, one on one side and one on the other.

The eyes are not drawn open but half-closed with the upper eyelid covering the top third of the iris, this will give him expression.
The eyebrows point up and outward.
The chin is like a long narrow letter "U."
The jaw is like another broader letter "U" behind the chin.
The mouth is like a long downward-pointing letter "M."
The nose is a long letter "U."

DETAILS
The eyebrows will be bushy. Use short choppy lines on the top and bottom to draw them leave the center white.
On both sides of the nose is a mark like a parenthesis ( ) for the nostril, but the nose dips past them.

How to Draw a Viking Face. by MrAdron.

Here is a link to a file that may print better, CLICK HERE.

PROJECT NOTES YOU MAY PRINT

OVERVIEW
This Viking face is a man's face with a short beard. He is wearing a helmet that has a slight point and nose piece.

Every head has a different shape but this one is hidden by the helmet and the beard so it is almost impossible to make mistakes.

BEGINNINGS
Draw a large oval for the head. Use guidelines to keep things even. Place a guideline straight up and down for the center. Draw a guideline halfway down across the face for the eyes. Place a guideline halfway between the eyes and the chin for the nose and one halfway from there to the chin for the mouth.

ADDING FEATURES
The eyes are on the guideline halfway down. The tops are like arches drawn with straight lines; first up, then over, then across. The lower eyelid is almost straight across but just a little curved. Draw a shadow below. Draw a shiny spot before you do the iris or the pupil.

The nose is partially hidden by the helmet nose piece. Draw two lines like the parenthesis for the outer nostril shape and a line like a slight "V" between them.

The upper lip is hidden by the mustache, the lower lip is more of a shadow below going across.

HAIR AND BEARD
The hair is stringy. Do not try to draw every line, just get the shape. Not all Vikings had long hair, so this one has his hair- just collar length. The hair does not just go down but poofs out a little from under the helmet. Draw the bottom edge of the hair and the beard with a lot of short choppy lines. Then have a few long lines going all the way.

HELMET
Save the helmet for last. The helmet is not rounded but has a slight point. It is wider than the head. Draw an arch over the head but give it the slight point. There are metal straps going around it and over the top, draw them as double lines. Draw the nose piece with a rectangle. Add circles for the nails.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Give him some scars. Use shading to give the face a rounded look.

PROJECT NOTES YOU MAY PRINT

BEGINNINGS
Remember to draw lightly so you can erase later.
The head is an oval shape. The pose is the three-quarter view, (where she is turning slightly away) so draw a guideline slightly to the left to help keep things straight. Use guidelines halfway down, and going across the face to place the eyes. Halfway below that draw, another one for the nose and halfway to the chin draw another for the mouth. The hair starts out as three large ovals.

FACE
Keep things simple. Draw two arches for the upper eyelid and a slightly curved line for the lower eyelid. The nose is a line going down and curving a little inward at the bottom. The mouth is small. The eyebrows are a thin line.

HAIR
Outline the flowers and any other ornaments you want to put in the hair before drawing in the hair. There are two chopsticks poking out, there are three strings of paper bells hanging down, and a charm that looks like a comb on the right side. The hair starts high up on the forehead. Remember to leave areas to be highlights- it is good to outline them early on. Use long curving lines starting at the forehead and going up or out. There is a bun at the top and a bun at the side. The highlights will help it to look real.

DRESS
The dress wraps around the shoulders. Draw two or four lines going down from the shoulders like cloth wrapping across.

NOTE: There is much confusion about the Geisha as who they are and what they do. The geisha is an artist who performs songs, dance, music, and other art forms. They were to be living expressions of art and beauty

The file above was made with a scanner the one below is digital. one of the two will work for you.

CLICK HERE for a file in PDF format.

YOU MAY PRINT THE PROJECT NOTES BELOW.

BEGINNING
Some people start on the humpback but that is only a minor detail, so save it for later on even last. Do the face first because the story is in the expression and the pose. Draw a large oval or egg shape for the head, make sure it is leaning over on one side. Draw a guideline down the center to help reference things. Use a stick figure technique for the arms, shoulders, and hands to get the pose right. Because he is hunched over and leaning forward the shoulders look like they are at his ears.

DEVELOPING THE FACE
Since the face is deformed it is OK if things are off-center.
     * The eyes are halfway down and are just two curved lines going down with half circles below.
     * The nose is like three large circles in the middle of the face.
     * The mouth is almost like a lopsided triangle.
     * Make the upper lip like the letter "m."
     * The ear is big and sticking out of the side of the head.
     * The hair is only above the ear and a little above the forehead.
     * Give the face wrinkles and two or three baggy chins by drawing curving lines.
     * Put a few warts here and there.
     * Give him three teeth on the top and on the bottom.

BODY
Use large circles and ovals to go around the stick figure form and fill out the arms and shoulders. After the form looks right sketch over it the shirt and tunic. Keep the hands simple they are mostly seen on the side. The thumb is at the back and sticks up over the top.

THE SCENE
Draw the arch behind him and the part of the bell showing behind the arch. The balcony railing is full of fancy decorations start them as circles and then connect the circles into decorations. Fill in the spaces between the decorations with arches and lines.

Our version of St Patrick has a short bishop's hat and a beard. The temptation is to draw them too soon and not have a well-developed face as a result, so save the beard and hat until the face is satisfactory.

BEGINNINGS
Start drawing light so you can erase later. Draw the basic shape of the face as an egg or oval. Draw three guidelines across the face. The first will divide the face in half from the top to the bottom, here is where we will position the eyes. Draw another guideline halfway frrm the first to the bottom for the nose and draw one more from that to the bottom for the mouth. Use a guideline down the center to help keep things even.

FACE
EYES. The eyes touch the bottom of the first guideline, they are evenly spaced apart and have as much space between them as they are wide. The iris are circles, draw them completely then draw a curving line over the top of them for the upper lid. There are a lot of wrinkles around the eyes since he is old.
NOSE. The bottom of the nose dips down so start it as a "U" shape. On both sides draw parenthesis ( ). Use shadow technique to shade under the nose and on the side of the face away from the light. The ridge of the nose is narrow but do not draw it- use shadow technique on the side away from the light to indicate this.
MOUTH.   The upper lip is covered by the mustache so only the bottom lip showing. The bottom lip is like two ovals sideways that partly overlap in the middle. The bottom is in shadow so use shading technique.
EARS. The ears are partly hidden by the long hair only the bottom lobs show they are just a pair of curving lines
WRINKLES. There are deep wrinkles around the mouth, and light wrinkles under the eyes, beside the eyes, between the eyes, and across the forehead.

BEARD AND HAIR
The beard is a series of wavy lines going down to an pair of uneven points. The hair is wavy and starts on the forehead above the eyebrows and go out to beside the ears and curls under below the ears. Draw the hair with wavy lines.

SHADING
The light comes from one side and makes shadows on the other this give it depth.

CLOTHING
The bishops hat is shaped like a diamond. It is divided in third with a cross in the middle. Color it green. He has a robe and a cloak they are green with white.

The elf youth has a slightly larger forehead and smaller chin.

BEGINNINGS
Start with a circle, then below the circle, draw a triangle for the jaw and chin. Use a guideline for the eyes a little lower than halfway down the face. The nose is about halfway from the eyes to the chin.

DETAILS
The eyes are almond-shaped and a little pointed up on the outside.

The nose is like a ball with a little ball next to it. Use a line to connect the nose to the eyebrow on one side.

The mouth is just three lines. The upper lip is stretched into a smile and is only a straight line across the face close to the nose. The lower lip is two curved lines.

The ears are triangles that point up and outward.

The neck on one side is a straight line that is in line with the nose going down. The neck on the other side starts at the ear and goes down until it curves into the shoulder.

Thank you.

I have other projects like this one. Search for them in the sidebar.

YOU MAY PRINT THE PROJECT NOTES BELOW.

BASIC
The face of Don Quixote is long. Start with an oval and use some guidelines. One guideline will go down the face a third away from the right edge; it is not center since we are drawing a face turned away at a three-quarter view. Draw a guideline across the face halfway down for the eyes. From the eyes go halfway for the nose and below the nose draw another for the mouth.

DEVELOP
The eyes are old and droopy. The upper eyelids incline downward at the outside. Under the eyes are curved lines and bags. There are wrinkles on the outside of the eyes.
The nose is big, and the end droops down.
The upper lip is covered by the long pointy mustache; use many lines going down to draw it- don't just outline it. Same for the pointy beard on the chin.
The lower lip is two curved lines.

ARMOR
Draw the helmet and armor last. The helmet is simple. It is just some curved lines.
The chain mail is easy if you use some guidelines evenly spaced in rows, then fill in the rows with curved lines for the chain links.
The armor is only outlined in our example.

SHADOW
Use shading to make different parts stand out. Make the chain mail darker than the face, and make the areas around the beard darker, so the beard looks brighter. Put shadow under the brim of the helmet. There is a shadow around the eyes, under the jaw, and under the nose.

FINAL TOUCHES
Put some wrinkles across the forehead and between the eyes.
Draw a wrinkle or two from the side of the nose to the outside of the mouth.
Use shading technique to add flabbiness to the neck.
Smudge the armor with a pencil or scribble little areas and add dots to show it is old and worn out.

Draw Cleopatra Queen of Egypt Worksheet

How to draw Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt drawing lesson and printable worksheet.

This is a fun drawing project that is both rewarding and enjoyable. It's especially rewarding when you show it to someone and they say, "I know who that is!"The Worksheet below may be printed for personal use.

There are a lot of things you can do with the portrait of Cleopatra, since her crown sometimes covered the sides of her head, or sometimes went up high.

How To Draw The Face Of Cleopatra Worksheet.

If you have problems printing the worksheet, see the How to Print tab above for some helpful tips.

You can print the project notes below, too.

BEGINNING STEPS
Start with a basic oval or egg shape for the head. User reference lines to place the features evenly. One reference line down the middle helps to keep things from getting too right or left. The eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin. The nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin, and the mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin. The ears are no higher than the eyes and no lower than the moth.

Get the face right before you start the hair, crown, or jewelry.

EYES
The eyes had heavy makeup but don't put it in until you have the eyes looking good first.  They arch over the top and are slightly curved on the bottom. The eyebrow is as long as the eye. The eyes are about as far apart as they are wide. So if the eyes are two inches wide, the space between them should also be two inches.

NOSE
Keep the nose simple. It is more shadow and shape, and there are not many lines.

MOUTH
The width of the mouth reaches to the pupil of the eyes. Her lips are full, and the top lip is more shadow than the bottom lip, and the bottom lip has a shadow underneath.

FUN STUFF
Save the fun stuff for last, like the crown, the snake in the crown, the hooped earrings, and the braided hair. The crown is part of a golden feathered headdress that sweeps out to the sides. Draw some guidelines first, so it doesn't get messy.

Add a shadow to give her more realism.

BEGINNINGS
The head is shaped like an egg but tilted to the left at the bottom. Do not draw the hat or clothing until you have a good beginning on the face.

Mark off your proportions:
     * The eye is halfway down the face.
     * The bottom of the nose is halfway from the eye to the chin.
     * The mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin.
     * The ear is almost in the center.

STYLE
Use straight choppy lines where ever possible when adding detail since it will give him a rugged look.

DETAILS TO THE FACE
The nose is hawk-like, so it sticks out and down like a rectangle.
There is a ridge on most faces over the eye, and the top of the nose is back under the ridge.

The mouth is simple; The upper lip is a line from the nose down and slightly out and then back, and it curves down for the frown. The lower lip is a half-circle that connects the upper lip and the chin. The chin is straight lines.

The eye is squinting. The top lid is arched, the bottom goes straight across from the nose and then curves up a little at the edge closest to the ear.

The ear is simple, with a few curved lines.

The hair is a mess, so draw a lot of curly shapes.

Put some shadow under the eye for bags and put wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Put a shadow under the cheekbone and use dots on the upper lip like a mustache.

Lastly, draw the hat, coat, overcoat, and wool scarf.

How to Draw A Gladiator Face and Helmet Worksheet.by MrAdron.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

Start with an oval for the basic head shape. Use two guidelines; one across the center, and one up and down the center to help keep things straight and even.

The helmet covers most of the face. There is a brim, it can be wide or narrow. It is pointed at the center, draw it as a line starting at the center of the forehead going down slightly and out past the ear and then looping back behind the head. Repeat this on both sides. Add a second line next to it to give the impression of thick heaviness.

Draw the center crest as a double line going up and down the top of the helmet. It goes above the helmet and may have feathers on it.

The band of decorations across the front of the helmet has a roaring lion in the middle and laurel leaves on both sides. You can choose other ways of decorating like fight scenes, wild animals or mythical deities.

The face mask is a wide curving line starting at the top of one ear going down to the nose and back up to the top of the other ear. It has two eye holes, they can be bars, circles or slits for the eye holes.

The cheek guards are two rectangles on each side of the face, They can be flared in as a chin guard.

THE FACE
The face is only the eyes and lower parts of the face. Give the eyes a serious look by making the tops a straight line going across. There are wrinkles around the eyes.

The mouth is three lines. The first line is shaped like a stretched-out letter, "M." Above that draw a rounded letter, "M;" the corners of the two touch. Below draw a rounded letter, "W;" the ends almost go to the edge of the letter "M" above.

Draw the wide jaw as straight lines.

Add armor and a weapon.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Start by drawing lightly at first so you can change things and erase them later.

BASIC FACE
Make each head a different shape, one can be oval, one egg-shaped, and one can be an upside-down teardrop shape. Have the one in the middle taller than the other two. Use a guideline up and down the center of each head so things can be kept even. Use another guideline across the center so the eyes will not be too high or low. Lightly draw these guidelines since you will want to erase them later.

DETAILS
Keep the details simple. Draw the crowns and hats last so you can focus on making good portraits. Draw the eyes curving downward like a bowl or a letter "u" because the wise men are looking down at the baby Jesus.  This is the only thing they have in common, make every face different.

Here are a few ideas.
     * Give one face bushy eyebrows and one no eyebrows at all.
     * Give one curly hair and make one bald.
     * Give one a beard and make one without a beard.
     * Give one a nose like a long letter "V" and give one a fat nose like three circles.
     * Give one a black beard and one a white beard.
     * Make the ears shaped like peanuts on one and kidney beans on the other.
     * Give one baggy shadow under the eyes.
     * Give one smile wrinkles.

HANDS
Start drawing them lightly like mittens without detail. Remember, the thumbs are pointing outward since the hands are palm up. After you have the general mitten shape, then draw three lines up and down to divide the fingers. Erase the outline of the mitten and add the fingernails.

GIFTS
The jar of incense is round, the box of spice is square, and the bag of gold, it is lumpy and round.

Make the robes simple. In my example, at the bottom, I drew it in a light pencil; afterward, I used a fine-tipped marker and went over my pencil, then erased the pencil. I finished it with watercolor. The copier guy only charges a little extra for color, and it makes a lovely half-fold Christmas card.

Worksheet for Simplified guide for Drawing a Face.

It is a good idea to draw a line down the middle to help keep things even.
The eyes are as far apart from each other as they are wide.
The outside of the nose is as wide as the eyes are far apart.
The outside of the upper lip lines up with the center of the eyes.
The eyebrows are wider than the eye.

Practice this pattern on a drawing without drawing the head, draw a tree with a face or a mirror or a door.

These guidelines are only part of the face see my other worksheets for more guidelines.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Everybody's eyes are different so don't get discouraged if the ones you draw are not perfect because somewhere there is someone with eyes like the ones you drew.

BEGINNING
This simple eye starts with three lines. The first one for the upper eyelid is like a rainbow arch. The second line is a circle with a little bit going above the arch. The third line is a wavy one for the lower eyelid.

Place your shiny reflective spot early so you won't work over it.

The eyebrow is wider than the eye, just make a few marks to place it in the drawing but come back and finish it later since it is easy.

DETAILS
Draw a circle for the pupal, it almost touches the eyelid with its top edge. The circle of the pupal and the circle of the iris should look like a doughnut.

The skin of the eyelids are thick. Draw a second line to show the thickness.

The iris has a dark edge, so go over the outside of the iris a little but not too much. There are flecks of color in the iris they are like lines going from the outside edge to the pupal.

There is a fold of skin above the eye, it is drawn as a shadow with a soft line.

The eyelashes start on the outer edge of the eyelids. The top eyelashes are much longer than the lower ones. There are more eyelashes on the side away from the nose and fewer near the nose.

The eyebrow curves over the eye. The hair of the eyebrow goes in different directions; near the nose, it goes straight up but in the center, it is at an angle toward the ear and at the end, by the ear, it is laying down pointing away.

There is a shadow on the eye caused by the eyelashes and the thick eyelid, it is a thin shadow so don't overdo it.

To print just highlight and send it to your printer or save to our device to print later. Some programs work better if you drag the image to the desktop and print from there. If you have problems see the how to print tab above for some suggestions.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

Start your drawing with a 2b pencil and draw lightly. You can go over it with a darker pencil or marker after you have the basic design worked out.

The face starts out as an oval. Divide it in half going up and down with a line. Keep everything on both sides the same distance from the line so that his face stays balanced
.
The eyes are in the middle on the line drawn across the face; this line should help keep one eye from being too high or lower than the other. Start them as circles and then draw the eyelids over them. The bottom eyelid goes down so he looks old and tired.  He has pale eyes so don't color them in.

The eyebrows are white and bushy; don't do too much just some shadow on the lower part of the eyebrow and a few hairs sweeping upward.

The nose is little more than halfway to the chin, it is big. (People's noses still grow as they age.)  It is like three circles; a big circle with two smaller circles on each side. Shadow the bottom. It should go down over the mustache a little.

The ears are big. They are as high as the eyebrows on top and as low as the bottom of the nose.

The hair and beard are thin and white. Draw a few long lines going down, try to keep from getting carried away, since we want him to have white hair.
.
He has white hair with some gray streaks .If you make the background dark that will make the hair look whiter.

His mouth is partly hidden by the mustache, only the bottom lip shows; it is a wavy thin line, with a shadow underneath.

Add a lot of wrinkles in the face especially around the eyes.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

Draw the basic shape of the head as an oval. Don't draw the hood yet, save that for later. Draw two guidelines; one vertical and one across the face dividing it in half each way. Draw the eyes on the halfway mark going across keeping the eyes evenly spaced from the vertical guideline. His eyes are curved on top and flat on the bottom. Put the shiny spot in the eye before you shade it in or color it.

The nose is halfway down from the eyes. The nose is shaped like the letter "u" with two curved marks on each side.  Shadow only one side of the nose.

The mouth is halfway down from the nose.  The lower lip is like two ovals together. The top is covered with the mustache. Shade the bottom of the lower lip.

The tops of the ears are as high as the eyes and the bottom is as low as the bottom of the nose. The ears are in the shadow of the hood, so don't worry too much about them.

The neck starts down at the ears, keep most of it in shadow.

Take your time with the eyebrows and the beard. The hair in the eyebrows go in three different directions, it starts up at the by the nose then tilt over some halfway across and the last part points toward the ear. When you do the beard keep the jaw looking hard and square.

Draw the hood last.

Put in a lot of shadows in the face. keep the beard and the eyes dark.
I could have done more with the hood it is supposed to be heavy black canvas material and has heavy thick folds in it.
