How to Draw a Picture of an Advent Candle Worksheet and Lesson

Here is a free lesson and printable worksheet for an Advent candle.

I wanted to create this lesson for a while. It is both simple and challenging at the same time. This project can be used to create a beautiful seasonal greeting card. Or used as an illustration with a scripture accompanying it.

It takes me hours or even days to create a worksheet like this, but I am glad to do it because I believe that when God gives you a gift, it is so you can be a gift to others. Thank You!

Below is a link to a file that may print better on some devices.

👉👉👉CLICK HERE for a file in PDF format.

If you have trouble printing the worksheet, then CLICK HERE to visit the how-to-print page for some suggestions.

I worked on this worksheet for about a week before I was happy with it. I hope you are able to use it and have fun with it.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Draw lightly at the beginning so you can erase later.

Start by using basic shapes. Use a rectangle for the candle part. Use ovals for the base and holder parts.
Make the top like a triangle that angles down.

Use two or three teardrop shapes around the top for the drips of melted wax.

Design the holly leaves around the base by drawing each leaf with two lines that bend out and then touch at the tips, this helps them to look even. Give them all a direction as they go around the base.
Use some circles for the holly berries. Draw the holly berries in two or three clusters. use simple circles but have one behind the others for interest.

The holly leaves have a line down the center but it is not a straight line, it is slightly curved.

Draw the wick like an upside-down letter 'J.'  Use a teardrop shape for the flame.  Give the teardrop shape a little "S" shaped wave for interest.

Go around the holly leaves and give the edges a multi-scalloped shape by drawing curving lines that meet each other at the ends to make points.

Erase and clean up the extra lines.

Use a line to show the back edge of the table it is sitting on. The tabletop will be white so the holly leaves will have the background to stand out against. Use shading on the area above to give the candle a contrasting background.

Use shading technique to give it a three-dimensional appearance. Be careful when you add shading to the candle because it is supposed to be white or a light hue so it is easy to over-do it. There will be some shadow under the drips. Put a little shadow on both sides and keep the middle light. The shadow on the side should be gradual from lighter near the center to the darkest near the edge. Spend most of your shading effort on the holy leaves they are dark by contrast. There will be shadows under the leaves or the bottom. There will be shadows around the berries. The darkest shadow will be under the edge at the bottom of the holly leaves.

Sign your picture about an inch from the bottom so there is room for a frame.

I hope you make a masterpiece!

How to Draw A Picture of a Christmas Wreath, Printable Worksheet and Lesson

Below is a printable worksheet for how to draw a Christmas wreath.

I felt that this is an exciting project for the holiday season or it can be a part of any memorial illustration.

SCROLL DOWN TO ACCESS THE FREE PDF.

The wreath at Christmas is a reminder of the crown of thorns that Christ wore when he was crucified for mankind's sins. It has since become a memorial symbol for many events and locations. It causes us to stop and think about the sacrifice and suffering of others. Wreaths are often found carved into memorials in cemeteries and monuments throughout the world.

Drawing a dramatic wreath is a lot of fun and makes a great Christmas card or poster for the holidays.

Sometimes it takes me hours, but I create these how-to-draw worksheets but I do it so that I can give back because I believe that when you have been given a gift, it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

Start by drawing lightly so that you can erase what you need to later.

If you are not an expert in drawing a circle try going around three or four times to get the shape truly round, but do not worry if it is not perfect because it is a wreath and they are not perfect circles.  Draw two circles so it looks like a fat donut. You can use the lids of a couple of jars and trace them for the circle. You are not cheeting if you use a jar lid to make the circle, every professional artist uses tools and the jar lid is as good as any.

Use basic shapes for the ribbon. Draw a square for the middle and two triangles on each side with the points going into the square. Draw rectangles for the bottom laces of the ribbon.  You are just working out the design now you will come back to the ribbon later.

Draw three or four circles to show where you will place the berry clusters and their leaves.

Use lines to give you ideas on where to put the leaves. Keep them going in the same direction in most cases clockwise. Have a few lines going outward or sideways for interest and to make it look real.
Draw circles for the berries and draw the leaves that go around the berries. Plan to make these leaves different maybe fatter and they point outward from the berries.

After you have worked out the design, go around the lines that were to show where the leaves would be. Do the leaves in two lines so they come to a point. If you try to use one stroke the leaf won't be even and look like you were not careful. THIS WILL TAKE A LONG TIME SO PLAN FOR IT AND DON'T RUSH.

Avoid lines that lead into another line, it is hard on the eye. Start one leaf on the sides of another but never on the tip.

Draw around the shapes of the ribbon to give them softer edges and graceful bendy lines.

Erase the extra lines.

Use the shading technique to give it a three-dimension effect. The darkest areas are at the base of each leaf and the lightest area is at the tip of each leaf.

Sign and date your work but leave room for a frame.

I hope you draw a masterpiece!

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
There are many ways to start but to help develop the pose of the child holding a crutch start with a stick figure with joints like knees, shoulders, and elbows.
The arm will be crossing over the chest so he can hold the crutch.
One of the shoulders will be higher than the other.
The child's head is larger than normal.
The legs are shorter than normal

DEVELOPING FORM
Draw around the stick figure to fill out the body.

HEAD
Remember the child's head has more forehead than an adult, but in our drawing, it is covered with bangs and the old-time hat. The nose mouth and eyes are closer together than an adult.
Keep it simple:
Use a guideline up and down to keep things even.
The eyes are two dots under the arch of the upper eyelid. The eyebrows are a simple curved line. Put a little shiny dot in the eyes to make them look shiny.
The nose is a "button nose" Draw an arch and give it two dashes sideways for the nostrils, (do not go up and down or make circles or it will look like a pig nose).
The mouth is a curved line going up it is wide expressing a contented grin. The lower lip is just a shadow draw it as a dash.
Do the hat and hair last. The hair is straight and sticks out at the sides.

HANDS
If the hands are a problem draw them like mittens since Tiny Tim wore mittens in the snow. Remember the thumbs go up and are at the backside of the crutch.

CLOTHES
Do the clothes last. Use a lot of curving lines in the pants.
Draw a brace on the leg, it is mostly straight lines. It is a part of the story.
The jacket is too small for him, so draw the waist-high and his shirt sticking out. The jacket has a big collar, it goes right up to the back of the head. It is drawn with double curves. there are patches on the elbows.
There are buttons on the pants, (the zipper was not invented yet.) There are patches on the pants, draw them like squares.
Use a lot of scratchy short lines to make the crutch look like wood. Do not make the crutch straight but give it a couple of bends.

This is is a simple Christmas star, and because it is simple small mistakes look bigger, so take your time and work carefully to keep lines and measurements perfect.

Draw lightly at first, so you can erase the guidelines later. Use a ruler or other straight edge to help you draw the lines straight and clean. There is no shame in using a tool to help draw lines straight, all craftsmen use tools.

BEGINNING
Draw a cross with the horizontal line about two-thirds of the way up from the bottom. This is just a guideline and you will erase it later. Draw a small square in the center and mark the four corners with a dot. Draw a second and third square centered on the cross and mark the corners with dots.

DEVELOPMENT
Use your straight edge draw lines from the corners of the smallest square to the tips of the cross.
Using the dots of the two larger squares draw long diamond shapes from the corners of the middle square to the corner of the larger outer square.

Erase the extra lines.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Use a guideline up and down to keep the face even on both sides. Draw a circle for the top two-thirds and a large "U" for the jaw. Use a guideline across about halfway down to keep the eyes level.
Draw the rectangles for the glasses early on in the project. They are on the cheeks and low on the nose.
The cheeks are like bracket symbols, one on one side and one on the other.

DEVELOPMENT
The ears are like large peanut shapes on either side of the head.
The eyes are not drawn open but half-closed with the upper eyelid covering the top third of the iris, this will give him expression.
The eyebrows point up and outward.
The chin is like a long narrow letter "U."
The jaw is like another broader letter "U" behind the chin.
The mouth is like a long downward-pointing letter "M."
The nose is a long letter "U."

DETAILS
The eyebrows will be bushy. Use short choppy lines on the top and bottom to draw them leave the center white.
On both sides of the nose is a mark like a parenthesis ( ) for the nostril, but the nose dips past them.
Use short straight lines to draw the top of the eyelid and the wrinkle over the top of the eye. Draw only part of the bottom eyelid, just a couple of dashes or will do.
The upper lip is a thin shadow, the lower lip is a thicker shadow underneath. It is like a "W" that is pointing downward at the outside.

FINISHING TOUCHES.
The hair comes out from the sides and goes down behind his back.
The clothing is a big black coat. The collar goes right up to the ears.  There is a stiff collar of a shirt and a bow underneath.
Use shading to give the effect of roundness.

START
Even though we are drawing an angel with wings, we will save the wings until we have worked out the body's position. Use an articulated stick figure with elbows, ankles, wrist, knees, and shoulders to pose the body.  For interest, have the near arm and leg pass over the far one.  Place the trumpet in this first step, so it is positioned well.

BODY
After the stick figure is posed, use ovals and loops to flesh out the body with the curves and contours of muscle. Add the wing nearest you as a triangle that is curved outward at the top point.

DETAILS
The face and hands are hard for some. The eyes are halfway down since the angel is blowing a trumpet to draw her eye closed; it is just a line with a slight downward curve. The mouth is like a sideways "W" with the trumpet in the middle. Draw a curve for the puffed-out cheek.

The hands are easy if you think of them as mittens. The thumb on the near hand is inside toward the face, and it is behind the trumpet. The hand holding the trumpet is like a square with the thumb coming off the side. The far hand is flat, and the thumb is down.

The feet can be hidden inside the long robe if they are too hard to draw. They have a round circle at one end attached to a triangle bent slightly away from the body.

The wings are like triangles with feathers on them. To help space the feathers evenly, mark off the spacing before you draw them in.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Draw the robe as flowing lines that gracefully go around the body.  Add the far wing by drawing only a few feathers showing behind the front wing and the wing's top, giving the far wing less detail than the near one. Draw the headband on the angle. The hair can be flowing waves. If you shadow the far wing, the hair will look brighter.

YOU MAY PRINT THE PROJECT NOTES BELOW.

BEGINNINGS
Keep it simple at first and draw a light outline of the project you want to draw. The house is seen from a corner angle; this makes it look more interesting than just the front. The horizontal lines of the roof, windows door, and bottom of the house tilt a little toward each other slightly as if they continued away to a place where they touched.

DEVELOPMENT
Use guidelines to outline the windows and the door so they are all even. Lightly draw a checker grid for the shingles on the roof so that when you draw the round shingles, they go in straight rows. Roughly sketch in the door, the walkway, and the chimney.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Draw shutters next to the windows and decorate them with gumdrops. Outline the house with gumdrops. Make the path out of peppermint suckers, and then draw candy canes beside the walkway. Draw lollipops for a garden and gummy bells for bushes.

Last, add a background so the house will have a world of its own.

I hope you create a masterpiece!

Use the basic shape of a tall triangle for the tree shape. Draw this lightly since it is only a framework, and some of it will need to be erased later. Draw a guideline straight up and down the center of the triangle to keep things even. This guideline divides the bottom of the triangle into even halves.

Inside the outline of the tree, "stack" four or five or more triangles, one halfway over the other above it, so each is overlapping.

On the bottom edge of each triangle, draw a line that curves like a smile; it needs to touch each end of the triangle's bottom corners. This curved line is a guideline to add texture to the tree by drawing a series of half circles or the letter "U" over and over on the line to look like individual drooping tree boughs.

Erase the triangles' extra lines, leaving only the outside shape and the curved lines.

Draw the trunk; use the guideline to put it in the right place.

Decorate your tree.

How To Draw Baby Jesus In The Stable

PRINTABLE NOTES

Use separate sheets of paper to work out the design of the building and the people. Draw the manger like a large "X" with some lines across for the wood texture. The baby Jesus was warped in rags, so draw lines across for the wrapping.

Draw the people like stick figures with elbows and knees at first, then put clothes on them. Keep the faces simple. You can use hair to cover mistakes and if the face on Joseph is a problem, put a beard on him. Keep the baby Jesus simple, just a circle for the head lying down and a slightly curved line for the closed eyes.

The stable is like a large letter "A" with walls.
In the middle is an imaginary reference called the vanishing point. All the lines that go from front to back recede to the vanishing point; this gives the stable perspective. The center is a good place to put the baby Jesus. You can use windows and stones in the walls for interest. The floor can have lines for straw. There will be shadows in the corners of the stable.

Once you have worked out your ideas, put them together on your final project. You might consider tracing the studies you used to work out the design onto the final project.

In my example, I used watercolor to go over the fine-tipped marker. I used violet and purple for the night sky and purple for the desert mountains in the background. To color the wood, I used different browns. On the stone, I used a little light wash of gray, but very watery, so it is mostly white. The dress on Mary is blue, and the Cloak that Joseph is wearing is brown.

Sometimes I spend hours creating these how-to-draw worksheets, but I do it so that I can give back because I believe that when you have been given a gift it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Use an articulated stick figure to perfect the pose and help with the composition.  An articulated stick figure is a stick figure with joints and girth in the chest and hips.

The hips are above the halfway mark, and the elbows are at the narrowest point of the waist.

COMPOSE
Begin by sketching lightly since you will be erasing later on. Draw the pose you want your angel to have; the example in the worksheet below has the angel with hands extended in greeting. You may want your angel to hold a candle, musical instrument, songbook, or not holding anything but have arms in the air for celebration.

CLOTHES
Once you have determined the pose draw the figure over the stick figure and add the robes. The example borrows the seasonal red with white trim for the robe and uses the traditional white gown underneath a gold belt and collar. Let the lines of the garment flow and have grace. The waist is narrower than the chest, and the hips are as wide as the shoulders.

HANDS
The hands are hard for some young artists, so I suggest keep them simple, draw them like mittens. The thumbs are up because the hands are held outward and palm up. If you want fingers, then draw three or four. The feet are just ovals with sandals.

FACE
Keep the face simple. The head is shaped like an egg, and the eyes are halfway from the crown of the head to the chin. Draw the eyes as dots with a curving line going out for the eyelid. The eyebrows are just a curve over the eyes. The mouth is a straight line with a wide "U" underneath. Just two dashes make the nose. Draw the hair last as a lot of little loops going down onto the shoulders.

WINGS AND STUFF
The wings look like a great big letter "M." Start with a circle on each side of the head. To the circle, add a line that curves out and away for the outside edge of the wing. There are three rows of feathers. Use a guideline to keep them even on both sides. You can make the rows go straight across or angled down and away. The example in the worksheet is down and away. Draw only three or four feathers on each row. Keep them simple.

Over the head, you can put a halo if you like; since she is the Christmas Angel, she has the Christmas Star in her halo.

Color the robe red and the gown very light blue. I like the wings to be white but added a little blue for the shadows.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

The challenge is to get both sides of the bell to match and have the same curves. I suggest a line going up and down the middle to be a guideline that the artist can use to measure off so that both sides are equal.

NOTE: Draw lightly at first so you can erase later on.

BEGINNINGS
Using the guideline draw a circle with the guideline straight through the center. To make a perfect circle, consider tracing around a coin or jar lid, real artists use tools like these all the time. Below the circle, draw an oval across the base; check to make sure one side of the oval is not higher than the other this will make the bell look deformed. The oval should be wider than the circle above it, and each side should be the same distance past the circle.

DEVELOP FORM
Add two circles, one inside the other for the ring at the top, and another small circle is sketched at the bottom for the clapper. If you used the guidelines, you could erase them now. Using freehand, draw the curve connecting the circle with the oval, make this curve graceful, and ensure that both sides match.

BOW
The bow starts as a circle for the knot with two ovals, one on each side. Draw the end of the ovals straight up and down. Add a curve line across the oval to give it a front and a back. There will be a second curve line smaller and touching the first at both ends to open up the bow.

RIBBON
The ribbon laces curve like the letter "S" or any way you want. Sketch the ribbons with two lines one for each side and like an upside-down letter "V" at the end. The top hanging part of the ribbon is just two lines going up and down.

SHADOW
Add shadow to make it look real. If you use red for the ribbons, make the background green, so it stands out. My example is gold bells. I used a little light brown for the shadow and put some blue in the green background to bring the bells forward.

Thank you for stopping by. I hope you are helped by this lesson.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Start by lightly drawing the outline using basic shapes; rectangles for the hat, legs, arms, circle for hands and head and a square for the body.

Once you are satisfied with the outline add more basic shapes to develop the details. To make the torso an hourglass shape, (this is two triangles one pointing up and one pointing down) you can draw an inward curve on both sides of the waist. Draw the nose with a rectangle, and the mouth with a rectangle. Make the eyes with two circles. The hair and beard are drawn with many wavy lines.

Add detail to the cuffs on the sleeves, buttons, pockets, belt, mustache, lips, and teeth. Do not make the hair solid but use the wavy lines over and over in a pattern to give the hair texture.

The hat has fur, this takes time; first using the cheek of the pencil shadow the hat so it looks round by shading toward the edges after that use the point of the pencil and draw a lot of short lines going in the same direction out and away from the center.

If you are drawing in pencil remember to use the cheek of the pencil and add shade for roundness.

If you are using a color medium here is a color scheme- but you can use your own.
     * The hat is black,

How To Draw The Three Wise Men. Lesson and Worksheet

This is a how-to-draw the Three Wise Men lesson.

This free printable drawing worksheet is an art lesson that is a little more complicated on the surface, but it is a fun, and rewarding project after you have the basic design worked out.

The how-to-draw the three wise men worksheet may be printed by highlighting it and sending it to your printer or saving it to your device and printing later. Some people have better luck by dragging the image off to the desktop and printing from there. If you have trouble making the worksheet below print, CLICK HERE to visit my how-to-print page for some suggestions.

Even though it takes hours, I draw these How to Draw Worksheets because I believe that when we have been blessed, it is so that we can become a blessing to others. I hope you enjoy these projects and they help you.

Thank you!

PRINTABLE NOTES

Start by drawing lightly at first so you can change things and erase them later.

BASIC FACE
Make each head a different shape, one can be oval, one egg-shaped, and one can be an upside-down teardrop shape. Have the one in the middle taller than the other two. Use a guideline up and down the center of each head so things can be kept even. Use another guideline across the center so the eyes will not be too high or low. Lightly draw these guidelines since you will want to erase them later.

DETAILS
Keep the details simple. Draw the crowns and hats last so you can focus on making good portraits. Draw the eyes curving downward like a bowl or a letter "u" because the wise men are looking down at the baby Jesus.  This is the only thing they have in common, make every face different.

Here are a few ideas.
     * Give one face bushy eyebrows and one no eyebrows at all.
     * Give one curly hair and make one bald.
     * Give one a beard and make one without a beard.
     * Give one a nose like a long letter "V" and give one a fat nose like three circles.
     * Give one a black beard and one a white beard.
     * Make the ears shaped like peanuts on one and kidney beans on the other.
     * Give one baggy shadow under the eyes.
     * Give one smile wrinkles.

HANDS
Start drawing them lightly like mittens without detail. Remember, the thumbs are pointing outward since the hands are palm up. After you have the general mitten shape, then draw three lines up and down to divide the fingers. Erase the outline of the mitten and add the fingernails.

GIFTS
The jar of incense is round, the box of spice is square, and the bag of gold, it is lumpy and round.

Make the robes simple. In my example, at the bottom, I drew it in a light pencil; afterward, I used a fine-tipped marker and went over my pencil, then erased the pencil. I finished it with watercolor. The copier guy only charges a little extra for color, and it makes a lovely half-fold Christmas card.
