Free How to Draw a Seagull on the Beach Worksheet and Art Lesson

I am glad to share my free how-to-draw a seagull on the beach worksheet and art lesson that you can download and print out for your class or personal enjoyment.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION!

I have always thought the seagulls were marvelous creatures. They inhabit shores all over the world. Sometimes they are alone, and sometimes they are in a flock. There is something beautiful in how they seem to drift in the sky as they search for food. They are bold, too, and will come close enough to a person to snatch their food.  So it seemed that sooner or later, I had to create a how-to-draw worksheet for the noble seagull.

If you have problems downloading the image below, click on the HOW TO PRINT tab, I have listed some common issues and possible solutions you can try. You can also download the PDF below if the image file is too problematic.

Free how to draw a seagull on the beach worksheet

I create these how-to worksheets because I believe in giving back and that when you have been blessed, you should seek to be a blessing to others. These worksheets take hours or even days to create, and I hope they are a blessing to you.

Thank You!

Here is a file that may work better on some devices. It is a PDF.

PRINTABLE NOTES

The setting is as important as the portrait of the seagull so start with the horizon line, just as you would with any landscape picture.  Start your drawing with a loose and free approach, almost as if you are just going to play around with some ideas. Scribble random circles where the huge clouds might be. Don't even try to put them anywhere on purpose; let the design of the clouds be like an accident. We'll come back to them later.

The seagull is in the foreground so draw it before you do too much with the background. Start the seagull with a teardrop shape sideways, an oval for the head, a rectangle for the neck, and a thin rectangle for the beak. Dont make the legs just straight; make him doing something like walking; it gives the picture interest.

Draw a few lines across the water for the crashing wave. When waves roll across the beach, they make foam on edge.  Draw a wavey line where you want the foam edge to be.

Go around the lines of the shapes that you used to start the seagull and make it look more like a seagull, then erase the extra lines.

There are so many different types of seagulls that you dont need to worry about making yours perfect because somewhere there is one just like yours.

Go around the scribbled circles that started the clouds and make the best parts darker, then erase the others, make sure the sunlight is on one side and the shadow is on the other.

Keep the sea simple. Use lines going right and left for the waves. The waves far away are small and short; the waves become larger up close where they are longer and larger.

Use a triangle to add a sailboat; this will give a sense of distance and size.

For the foam of the crashing wave, start with tiny circles, then go around them and erase the extra lines. There will be shadows underneath the foam and under the part where the wave curls over.

The water of the wave will have a flow over from the top, and a flow out from the bottom uses fine lines to show this.

Use lines back and forth to shade the dark areas of the foreground water.

The sand is darker and coarser near the bottom; it is finer and lighter near the water. Take your time and use many dots in horizontal rows to give the sand texture.

Take your time with shading and texture; this is what will make the picture look real.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
Start with the main horizon. First, draw a jagged line for the top of the cliff.
Second, draw the line for the distant pool.
Third, draw the waterfall as long downward-flowing lines. Give a few humps where the water splashes over rocks.

DEVELOPING THE COMPOSITION
The waterfall flows over a cliff. Outline the sides of the cliff with ridges that flow down and inward. Use straight, jagged lines. Add boulders and rocks at the bottom near the water.

Add the texture of plants. Draw "m" shapes for the top edges of the bushes and "V" shapes for the bottom. The plants follow the direction of the cliffs, down and inward.

Add trees above the cliff. The bushes hang over the side of the cliff.

The edge of the water has boulders and boulders stick up from the water. Draw the boulders as rounded shapes like the letter "D" on its back.

Use thin lines going back and forth for the water. Put more lines lower near the front, so it is darker and fewer lines higher near the back edge, so it is lighter; this gives some contrast between the water and the cliffs.

TEXTURE
Keep adding the leaves going over and down the cliffs. Use a lot of scribbly lines and leaf-like shapes. Add more sharp jagged lines for the rough feel of the cliffs.

SHADING
The waterfall is light, and everything else is darker. Put shadow on the side of the rocks and under the plants, and under the trees.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Start the stalk with two lines that are a little farther apart at the bottom and almost touching at the top.

Add three or four ovals for the corn.  The ovals are different sizes, the bigger ones are at the bottom and the smallest ones are at the top. Start them halfway up.  Draw them one on the right then on the left side a little higher than on the right a little higher.

Mark off lines where each leaf is going to be, they alternate on each side and tilt upward.

DEVELOP FORM
Draw the leaves like long blades of grass that go up and flop down.  The leaves are bigger at the bottom and smaller at the top.  Have some cross in front of others for a realistic three-dimensional effect.  The bottom line of the leaves angels all the way across the stalk

There are flowers at the top they are small rows of circles and flop over.

DETAILS
The corn cob has leaves wrapping around it, so draw a line curving across the length of the corn to show this. To draw the open one use two lines for the leaves on each side, (so it is in thirds lengthwise), in the center third draw a checkered grid, then round off the squares and darken the points where the grid lines cross.

SHADING
Use shading to give it roundness.

SHAPE
Every type of tree has a different shape, decide what shape you want your tree to be. Lightly draw the outside shape that you will fill in with the details.

TRUNK AND BRANCHES
The trunk is two lines that go down and out at the bottom. Draw the roots like wavy lines. Lightly draw some double lines for some branches so they will be ready to show through the leaves. The branches should go up and out like a Chinese paper fan.

LEAVES IN CLUSTERS
Draw circles all over for the clusters of the leaves. Leave spaces around some of the branches so they will show through.

DETAILS
Draw the leaves by giving texture to the clusters you circled. The texture will make it look like leaves. The bottom leaves of each cluster will have pointed bottoms like the letter "V" or "W" the top leaves of each cluster will be rounded like the letter "M."

The bottom of the clusters will be darker. Between the clusters draw shadows. Remember to leave the branches showing.

SHADOW
The light should be on one side and the dark on the other. You can darken the texture for the dark side and lighten the texture for the light side.

Under the tree is shadow draw it like dark grass or lots of rocks.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Give the tree a world to live in such as a farm, forest, meadow city street or country lane.

We will draw fluffy clouds.

Start with the top clouds. They will be the largest.

The bottoms are flat. Draw as a few straight lines.

The tops are lots of circles bunched together. Go over the top edges of the circles to give the cloud shape. Put some inside not just on the tops.

Draw the clouds below the top ones. These are farther away and will have smaller circles and shapes.  Have some of the clouds go up and behind the first ones you did.

The smallest clouds will be the ones near the horizon. Put some peeking up over the distant mountains.

Draw some clouds off the side of the picture for interest and to let people know the scene goes beyond the view.
