PRINTABLE NOTES. 

BEGINNINGS.
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later.

Use common shapes to make a simple outline.
A circle for the head and a little ways below the circle draw a large teardrop. The teardrop should be at least three times the size of the circle.
Use a half circle for the muzzle.
Use two curved lines for the shoulders and arms to connect the head and the body.

DEVELOP FORM
Use curved lines for the arms and legs.
The top of the head is flat.
The ear is like a small circle at the back of the head.
The feet are outlined first as squares for size and shape.

REFINING THE PICTURE
Work over the lines, so they flow together smoothly since he is a fat little fella.

HEAD
Use a guideline to keep the eye, ear, and nose straight. They are in a line. The eye is a curved arch and a curved line below like an almond. The nose is like a "V," The mouth is like another "V" upside down.

HANDS AND FEET.
Lightly draw the bones first with circles and lines, then outline circles and lines to get the knotty shape of the joints on the toes and fingers. Don't forget the claws.

FUR
Maybe the fur is the most important part. Take your time and use short lines. The lines should go outward away from the center to the edges. Use more lines to make shadows and fewer to make the highlights.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Begin with some guidelines so everything will be straight. This is a very important step.
Draw a line going up and down for the shaft of the candelabra this is just a guideline. Draw a straight line across the top where the arms will end this will help make all the arms come to the same level and not look crooked. Mark where the arms will end and where they will come out of the shaft.

Draw a line for each of the arms from each side to the top guideline. They should curve gently in a "U".  At the top guideline draw a large letter "U"s for the little bowls where the flame or candle will come out of. use the guideline so they are even. Draw circles below each cup keep it between the guidelines. Draw triangles below the circles, keep them even with the guideline.

Draw a circle where the arms connect to the shaft. Go around the lines of the shaft and the arms to give them thickness.

The Star is done with two triangles, one over the other. Draw the triangles then go around them to make it thick.

Use basic shapes for the base like triangles and rectangles.

Add candles or flames each day.

LESSON NOTES

BEGINNING
Start by drawing lightly. Draw a stick figure as a foundation, and to help get the pose right.
The head is a long oval and is low on the shoulders.
To place the hand on the staff draw it like a bent square at first and come back to make the details later.
To make the hand that holds the hourglass draw it like a mitten at first and come back to it later.

DEVELOP FORM
Draw the ragged robe around the stick figure. Draw the bottom of the legs and feet. Keep the legs skinny. Draw ovals for the open sleeves.

THE FACE
Keep the face simple. Draw the eyelids pointing downward to the outside that gives him a worried look. The nose is big and goes over his mustache Draw the eyes as dark dots over to the side so it looks like he is looking at the hourglass.
The beard covers the lower part of the face make it long and wavy.
The eyebrows are bushy.
The ears are like big peanuts on the side of the head.

DETAILS
Find a button or some small round thing and trace around it to make the top and bottom of the hourglass. Draw the top of the hourglass as a horizontal oval.
Draw the fingers inside the mitten drawing from earlier.The thumb is on the outside pointing away.
Draw the fingers on the staff. The thumb is on the inside and behind the staff.
The robe has a rope belt.
Make the robe ragged at the end and shadow the part behind.
The sandals have only one strap over the top. Don't draw all the toes just the big toe.
Make the staff with a lot of short choppy lines so it has texture and looks woody.

FINISHING TOUCHES
There is a rope around his waist, give it a lot of texture.
Give the clothing some rips and holes.
Give the face some wrinkles.
Use shadowing to give the figure some roundness.
Shade the robe just a little so the beard looks whiter.

PRINTABLE ART LESSON PROJECT NOTES

BEGINNING
Use basic shapes to make an interesting house. Draw lightly so you can erase later and experiment with the design. Some parts are in front of other parts like the porch or the tower. Show the house from the corner and have two sides. Don't worry about straight lines- in fact, if the lines are a little crooked it makes the house look older and more spooky.

DEVELOPING DESIGN
Add the windows and the doorway. Use guidelines to keep the tops and bottoms of windows all in a line if one is higher or longer it looks sloppy.

Add a line for the brick foundation and two lines that curve outward for the stairs

DETAILS
Add the roof shingles by drawing the letter "U" in rows. Add shutters by drawing long rectangles next to the windows, have some hanging crooked. Add a railing for the porch, Add the brick foundation with short thick sideways lines

FINISHING TOUCHES
Add a fence but have a few pieces falling down or missing. Draw flagstones in the sidewalk. Add bricks to the chimney the same as the foundation. Add a few dead trees on the side of the house. A few tombstones are always a good idea and a bat or black cat. and don't forget the moon.

Make the windows dark unless you are going to have a spooky green light coming from inside.

How to Draw a 3D Cross is a free worksheet that you can print by highlighting it and sending to your printer or saving it to your device and printing later.

PROJECT NOTES YOU MAY PRINT

The 3D is seeing not only the front of the object but turning it to see the side angle also.

BEGINNINGS
I start with a ruler. Some people do not think an artist needs a ruler, but a ruler is a tool, and every craftsman uses tools. Use a ruler to draw the lines straight and start with a light pencil to draw lightly since you will need to erase some of the lines.

DEVELOP FORM
This project requires attention to keeping lines parallel to make it look good. Draw two parallel lines going up and down for the shaft of the cross and then two parallel lines going across for the crossbeam. It is OK if they cross over each other since you are still drawing lightly and will be erasing later. Draw lines to close off the ends and the top and bottom. This should be a basic flat cross.

Use the ruler to measure both sides of the crosspiece to make sure it is not lopsided.

THE SIDE VIEW
To begin the side view that makes the 3D effect use the ruler to draw five diagonal lines from the top corners going down at an angle all going the same way. These angle lines are at the very top of the shaft, one at the top of the crosspiece, and three under the crosspiece. Last, draw the lines the make the backside edges. These will start at the short angle lines.

DETAILS
Many people add the sign on the top, or the nails, or the crown of thorns. Some add the shroud draped over the crossbeam. Put in the background with some long wavy lines for the near hills and some choppy lines for the distant mountains.

BEGINNINGS
Keep it simple at first and draw a light outline of the project you want to draw. The house is seen from a corner angle; this makes it look more interesting than just the front. The horizontal lines of the roof, windows door, and bottom of the house tilt a little toward each other slightly as if they continued away to a place where they touched.

DEVELOPMENT
Use guidelines to outline the windows and the door so they are all even. Lightly draw a checker grid for the shingles on the roof so that when you draw the round shingles, they go in straight rows. Roughly sketch in the door, the walkway, and the chimney.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Draw shutters next to the windows and decorate them with gumdrops. Outline the house with gumdrops. Make the path out of peppermint suckers, and then draw candy canes beside the walkway. Draw lollipops for a garden and gummy bells for bushes.

Last, add a background so the house will have a world of its own.

BEGINNING
Begin with just the boat shape. It curves across the top and comes to a point at the front; the back is straight up and down.  There is a raised deck at the front and a double step-deck at the back.

MAST
Lightly draw the mast without the sails first; this will help to place the sails correctly. The mast are thick so use two lines, one for each side. Use a ruler or straight edge to keep them straight; they were wider at the bottom. There are two major masts; one in the center and one is halfway from the center to the front. There is a smaller mast at the back and a tilted mast at the very front.

There are two cross beams on each big mast. A small cross beam is at the top, and a long one is at the center of the mast. The little mast at the front and back each has one cross beam. The back cross beam goes up and down at an angle.

SAILS
The sails would be rectangular except the blowing wind and stretching makes them taper to points at the bottom corners. The top sales are wider at the bottom and very narrow at the top. Where they connect to the cross beams, the sails dip in a series of "U" shapes.

DETAILS
There are four cannon ports low on the side.
The side has several lines going from front to back.
There is a ledge below the mast on the outside of the ship where the rigging connects.
The flags are The Dutch Cross on the front mast and the British Union Jack on the second mast.
There is a railing around the decks.
The rudder is a curved line and a vertical line going down.
The water in the foreground should be darker, and the water in the distance should be lighter.

BEGINNING
Start simple. Use the basic shape of a teardrop for the body, circles for the head and muzzle, ovals for the ears and half-circles for the feet. Don't worry about making it perfect, bunnies sit in many ways.

Go over the basic shapes to smooth out the outline. Draw softly since he has soft fur.

DETAILS
Draw the face with straight lines. Give him a flat forehead and a bent downward nose ridge. The mouth area is down then curving back. The mouth is a slight curve like a letter "S" lying down backwards. Behind the neck is a little ball of fur.

There are three rows of freckles, the nose is a curved line.

The eye is big. The top is a half-circle and the bottom is a wavy line. Inside the eye is a circle around a big black dot.

The bottom feet are half circles and his back legs are hidden by fur. The front legs bend outward at the elbow. Draw the lines fuzzy.

The basic flower shape is a cone with six tapering triangles for petals at the wide end.

BEGINNING
Start by lightly drawing the cone shape. Don't make anything perfect, the randomness of the shape is more realistic.  Draw a circle or oval at the wide end of the con to be a guideline. There is a short inside edge, draw it as a short curved line a little way in. On the edge of the circles and ovals draw six marks to indicate the points of the six petals.

DEVELOP FORM
Using the guidelines draw the sic petals like triangles, one or two will end at the short inside edge line drawn earlier. The other five will go a little way down the cone. Give the triangles a little curve outward.

DETAILS
There are five little balls on stalks inside the cones some are longer than others.

The flowers usually come off of one stalk, draw the stalk or stalks as two parallel lines.

Draw the leaves last. They are like blades of grass- long and thin.  They come off of the stems and are tangled up, keep drawing them until you have a lot and they fill up all the space near the stalks.

The flower is white, and the leaves are very deep green.

The basic difference is the head is very big; half of the height of the figure is the head.

Draw lightly at first so you can erase later on. Mark off the halfway point and draw a large oval for the top half. In the bottom half draw a stick figure to get the pose right.

Lightly draw guidelines on the oval of the head to keep things even; one guideline is up and down the middle and one goes across the middle; you will need to erase this later.

The eyes are very big and are on the halfway guideline. The eyes are simply circles with an arch on top. Add a smaller circle inside for the Iris. Darken the arch for eyelashes. Outline bushy eyebrows.

The nose is just a flat"V" at the bottom of a line that is just to the side of the guideline.

The mouth is a thick line for the upper lip it gets thinner in the middle and at the outside edge. The lower lip is just a short line for a shadow.

The hair is curly. Start by lightly scribbling circles then go over the best with a darker pencil. The beard is short, just use straight lines on the bottom and a few lines on the top. Leave it white.

The hat is a half-circle and an oval. Draw it at a tilt to one side.

The body is stocky and drawn around the stick figure. After you have drawn the curves of the arms and the legs then erase the stick figure. Draw the shirt, vest, and pants. The boots are boxy.

The hands are drawn in short straight lines.

The leprechaun has green and white clothes, His eyes are black, brown, or green. His hair is orange or red.

Give him a pot of gold.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Make the pose using a stick figure; bend the arms and the legs. The baby has short arms and legs, and a very big head with almost no neck.  Draw this lightly so you can erase it later.

Once the pose is right, then draw circles for the shapes of the arms and legs, draw right over the stick figure. Draw the chubby body as a circle for the chest and a bigger circle for the tummy.

Outline the shape made by the circles it should look like a chubby baby.

Keep the hands simple, just squares tilted at an angle with the thumbs up. The feet are just bent rounded triangles.

Use a very sharp pencil to lightly draw the features of the face, keep it simple. Give him a big forehead. Put the eye, nose, mouth in the bottom third. Use only a dot for the eye, he has no eyebrow or chin. The hair is curly, thin, and short, don't overdo it.

Make the wings tiny. Outline them first with curved lines that go out and up. There are not many feathers.

Give him a diaper or ribbon over the special areas.

I suggest you practice drawing the bow and arrow on another piece of paper before trying it in the final project. Use a guide line up and down so the ends of the bow are in the right place. Draw a large bend that touches the guideline. The arrow should be right across the middle of the bow. Draw the bowstring last.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

Start by lightly drawing an outline, you will want to erase some later.
Use a guideline straight up and down to center things so they stay even.
At the top of the guideline draw two circles that overlap slightly.
Below the circles draw a large letter "V." It goes from the circles, and the point meets the guideline.

Start the ribbon by drawing two bent lines parallel to each other, they could be right across the heart or lower.
Use a line to connect the top and the bottom at the ends.
Add two double curving lines at the bottom starting at the outside edge, going back in, then down and then out, like an "S" on one side and a backward "S" on the other.
Add a short horizontal parallel line halfway down the outside edge of the ribbon.
Use lines up and down to connect the top parts to the bottom curved parts.

Put the "M" on the ribbon on the guideline to keep the lettering even. Next put the "B" on the left and the "e" on the right. Last fill in the rest of the letters to spell out "Be Mine."

Erase the guideline and any extra marks then go over the drawing with a dark pencil or marker.

Color it as you want and give it to someone.

Use the basic shape of a tall triangle for the tree shape. Draw this lightly since it is only a framework, and some of it will need to be erased later. Draw a guideline straight up and down the center of the triangle to keep things even. This guideline divides the bottom of the triangle into even halves.

Inside the outline of the tree, "stack" four or five or more triangles, one halfway over the other above it, so each is overlapping.

On the bottom edge of each triangle, draw a line that curves like a smile; it needs to touch each end of the triangle's bottom corners. This curved line is a guideline to add texture to the tree by drawing a series of half circles or the letter "U" over and over on the line to look like individual drooping tree boughs.

Erase the triangles' extra lines, leaving only the outside shape and the curved lines.

Draw the trunk; use the guideline to put it in the right place.

Decorate your tree.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Use separate sheets of paper to work out the design of the building and the people. Draw the manger like a large "X" with some lines across for the wood texture. The baby Jesus was warped in rags, so draw lines across for the wrapping.

Draw the people like stick figures with elbows and knees at first, then put clothes on them. Keep the faces simple. You can use hair to cover mistakes and if the face on Joseph is a problem, put a beard on him. Keep the baby Jesus simple, just a circle for the head lying down and a slightly curved line for the closed eyes.

The stable is like a large letter "A" with walls.
In the middle is an imaginary reference called the vanishing point. All the lines that go from front to back recede to the vanishing point; this gives the stable perspective. The center is a good place to put the baby Jesus. You can use windows and stones in the walls for interest. The floor can have lines for straw. There will be shadows in the corners of the stable.

Once you have worked out your ideas, put them together on your final project. You might consider tracing the studies you used to work out the design onto the final project.

In my example, I used watercolor to go over the fine-tipped marker. I used violet and purple for the night sky and purple for the desert mountains in the background. To color the wood, I used different browns. On the stone, I used a little light wash of gray, but very watery, so it is mostly white. The dress on Mary is blue, and the Cloak that Joseph is wearing is brown.

The challenge is to get both sides of the bell to match and have the same curves. I suggest a line going up and down the middle to be a guideline that the artist can use to measure off so that both sides are equal.

NOTE: Draw lightly at first so you can erase later on.

BEGINNINGS
Using the guideline draw a circle with the guideline straight through the center. To make a perfect circle, consider tracing around a coin or jar lid, real artists use tools like these all the time. Below the circle, draw an oval across the base; check to make sure one side of the oval is not higher than the other this will make the bell look deformed. The oval should be wider than the circle above it, and each side should be the same distance past the circle.

DEVELOP FORM
Add two circles, one inside the other for the ring at the top, and another small circle is sketched at the bottom for the clapper. If you used the guidelines, you could erase them now. Using freehand, draw the curve connecting the circle with the oval, make this curve graceful, and ensure that both sides match.

BOW
The bow starts as a circle for the knot with two ovals, one on each side. Draw the end of the ovals straight up and down. Add a curve line across the oval to give it a front and a back. There will be a second curve line smaller and touching the first at both ends to open up the bow.

RIBBON
The ribbon laces curve like the letter "S" or any way you want. Sketch the ribbons with two lines one for each side and like an upside-down letter "V" at the end. The top hanging part of the ribbon is just two lines going up and down.

SHADOW
Add shadow to make it look real. If you use red for the ribbons, make the background green, so it stands out. My example is gold bells. I used a little light brown for the shadow and put some blue in the green background to bring the bells forward.

Our pilgrim lady has a soft gentle face so we are avoiding using a lot of lines.

Start with a circle, then draw the jaw and chin as a large curved "V" shape, so she will have a little pointed chin. Draw a line up and down the center so you can use it as a guide to keep things even.

The eyes are half way down from the top, the space between the eyes is no wider than the eyes themselves.

The nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin and is no wider than the space between the eyes.

The mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin.

Only the bottoms of the ears show, they are even with the nose.

Very little hair shows, just at the forehead and behind the neck.

Her neck is not wide; it starts just where the jaw curves in a little below the ears.

The hat is floppy, it has a band with small ruffles around the face and large folds above.  It has a ribbon tied under the chin.

Keep the features simple. Draw the upper eyelids as an arch. Draw the upper lip as a shadow. The nose is like two dashes with curves on each side.

Use shading to give the face soft roundness. Avoid extra lines since they will make her look old.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Start with an oval head shape. Use a guide-line up and down in the center to keep things even. Draw lightly at first so you can erase later.

Outline the hat making sure the brim is almost as low as the eyebrows. Just outline it now and finish the hat and clothing last.

Draw the face with straight lines wherever you can, this will give him the rugged manly look.

The eyes are halfway down from the top. Mark off the shiny spots early so they don't get drawn over and lost. The eyebrows are bushy and wider than the eyes. The edge of the hat almost touches the eyebrows.

The tip of the nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin. Keep this nose simple. Only shadow one side, and underneath. The nose dips down and is a little wider than normal. There should be a slight shadow at the top of the nose under the eyebrow.

The mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin. The upper lip is just a shadow shape. The lower lip looks like a very spread-out letter "W" and is shadowed heavy.

The ears are almost even with the nose and the tops are hidden by the long hair.

The neck is almost as wide as the head, and the shoulders taper down slightly.

Don't get too frustrated over the collar and the clothes, there were different clothes in historical paintings showing a variety of collars, coats, capes, and shirts.

Pumpkins are round but not a circle. Draw the outline as a lopsided circle with the bottom mostly flat. Draw a second pumpkin outline in front of the other. These outlines can be a little lumpy shaped but don't overdo it.

The stem is not at the very top but a little lower, this gives perspective to the pumpkin. The stem is rough so draw it with little short choppy lines. Add shading to the shadow side with short choppy marks made with the "cheek" or side of the pencil. Do not shade in the top cut off part, it remains white. The bottom of the stem has little bumps like toes, sketch them in like circles with a shadow on one side.

The pumpkin has creases or folds in the sides. These creases are shaped like a bow without the string or arrow,  they start at the top then bend outward and then back into the bottom where they might touch. These creases often are a shadow but will have a highlight on the outside edge next to the shadow.

Remember to leave the highlights where the light is shining on the side of the pumpkin. Lightly outline the highlights before shading the shadow side of the pumpkin.

The shadows make it look round and real. Shadows come in very dark, dark, and gray. Do the very dark first at the bottom and the side away from the light. Then add the dark around the very dark and last lightly fill in everything else with the gray- but keep the highlights pure white. Leave a little highlight between the pumpkins to help show they are separated.

A shadow on the table and the wall behind the pumpkin will make it look like it belongs somewhere.

Quickly scribble out a basic design. It starts like a stick figure with wide shoulders, then dress the stick figure in coveralls and shirt. The hands are a little lower than halfway down. Have some straw sticking out of the cuffs of the shirt and the bottom of the pants.

The head is just a circle with a happy face drawn on it. Sketch a handkerchief around the neck; it is like two triangles, a circle for the knot, and a scribble for the ends.

The hands are just gloves stuffed with straw so they do not have the correct shape. You can scribble them out and then color them in dark.

The shoes look like peanuts with laces. Just draw the peanut shapes then make sure the bottom is flat. Draw some "Xs" for the crisscross laces.

The hat is maybe the hardest part. Draw a rectangle for the top then draw two curving lines for the brim; one curving line goes across the front and dips down on the outside edges, the second is in two parts, one on each side of the head halfway down, this is for the back brim of the hat and will curve up to touch the tips of the front line that curves down.

The pole is two dark lines going from the ground up to his back.

Draw his world by scribbling across the ground with light and then dark pencils. Draw the field as long lines going up and down but topped with short choppy lines for the tops of the grain. Draw the farm and hills very simply so the attention is on the scarecrow man.
