LESSON NOTES

BEGINNING:
Use basic shapes to form a simple dog head. Start with a large circle. Add two triangles at the top for the ears. Draw a rectangle for the muzzle. If you make it long he looks older if it is short he looks younger.

DEVELOPMENT
     * The eyes are like a diamond sideways.
     * The mouth is low on the muzzle, draw a line across but curving up at the outside edge.
     * The nose is a triangle at the top of the muzzle,
     * The upper lip curves up draw a line going up for it.
     * The neck and shoulders are broad, use two lines; one starting at the ear and going out and down and the other halfway across the bottom of the muzzle going down and slightly out.

DETAILS
The eye is edged in black. The ears are slightly rounded. There are four rows of freckles. The lip is black.

FIR
Take your time with the fur so it looks good. As you draw the fur use strokes with your pencil going the direction of the fur, the direction fur goes is out away from the center.
     * The top of the head is dark
     * There is a line of dark down between the eyes.
     * The ears are edged in dark.
     * There is a band of dark circling the face starting behind the earn and ending below the cheek.
     * On the opposite side of the face is another under the chin but it is short.
     * There is a second band going down the back edge and curving in at the bottom. (but it is not as dark)

How To Draw A Simple Dog Face In Profile

How to draw a dog face in profile drawing lesson and printable worksheet.

This How To Draw A Simple Dog Face e project will help the young artist gain confidence as they draw an easy portrait of a dog in profile. There are many courses and classes that teach how to draw, but the student often learns more by just getting busy and drawing a lot of things. This worksheet will help practice some techniques, but the student should explore their style and try different techniques.

Teachers and parents may offer this as a class project or the art student could take it as an extra assignment. For example, practicing a musical instrument and drawing have to be practiced, too.

If you have problems printing the image, see the HOW TO PRINT tab for some suggestions.

LESSON NOTES

This project was modeled on the Golden Retriever but it can serve for any of the larger dog breeds.

BEGINNING
Begin your sketch by drawing lightly so you can correct it later on.
Start with a circle for the forehead, brow, and back of the head. The muzzle starts as a rectangle and two lines form the neck and shoulder. The line under the jaw is curved forward out and then back for the fold of the jowls. The muzzle is divided into unequal halves by a long thin triangle that will form the smile of the Dog.

DEVELOPMENT
The nose is a rounded triangle on the top of the muzzle. The eye looks like a triangle with a large circle inside, but the bottom of the lower eyelid curves down. The ear is two lines that start at the back of the head and tilt forward like a large letter "U". The mouth is curved slightly like a smile. There are four teeth shaped like triangles and a gap between them and the long tooth at the front.

DETAILS
The eye is almost all black, the blackest area is around the edges. There is a shiny spot in it. The mouth has a black edge all around it. The nose has a dark line going up for the nostril. The tongue is two curving lines that go out and down then back up and in.

FUR
Take your time with the fur. The fur on the face is short so draw short thin lines that do down and back. The fur on the ear is long and flowing use long slightly thicker lines. The fur on the neck and shoulder are long and flowing use long darker curvy lines.

PROJECT NOTES.

DESIGN
The puppy is almost half head so draw the body like a square and the head as a circle that is the same size as the body. The legs start halfway down the body; they divide the body into thirds. The paws are big and are half of the legs.

A collar and dog tag can be drawn in at the beginning, so it does not get lost when drawing the fur later on.

FACE
The face is as simple as they come.
     * The eyes are halfway down the face from the top to the chin.
     * The nose is a little below the eyes, and the mouth is below the nose,
     * Do not need to worry much about the mouth since it is covered in fur.
     * The ears are on top of the head directly above the eyes.

FUR
The fur is many many short and long lines. The secret is to remember to draw the lines in the right directions. Think of a fan blowing straight at the center of the puppy the fur is pushed away outward from the center. All the fur is going outward.

Go over the outline of the puppy with short lines then go around with a second layer of longer lines giving the fur a matted texture. Add fur all over the body to fill it in. Use lines of fur to give shadow between the legs and areas of dark.

Advanced students may want to blend with a stub before adding the last layer of fur.

I hope you draw a masterpiece!

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

BEGINNING
Start with straight lines to make the basic body. Just outline it lightly at first. The body is almost a rectangle but higher at the shoulders and lower for the chest. The neck is strong and powerful so make it thick.

 LEGS
Draw a line back and forth for the ground so the legs all are the same length. The back leg is curved down and back along the backbone, the thigh of the back leg is curved down and going way back to the ankle. The bottom of the leg is shaped like an "L," use straight lines to draw it. The front legs are almost straight lines but a little wider at the shoulder. The ankle bends forward to the paw.

HEAD
Draw the head with short straight lines at first to outline the shape. Give the muzzle a slight hump or bend in it. The ears are pointed and lean forward slightly. The forehead could be either high or low. Be careful about the teeth, they can make a good drawing look messy- less is more with teeth.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Go over your drawing with a darker pencil or a marker to make the lines smooth and clean. Erase any extra lines. Give him a collar and a badge. His badge or vest could say, "K9" or "Deputy Dog." You can color the Dog brown or black.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

Start with a light pencil like a 2h or 2 b and draw the basic shape of the head; it is just a circle with two triangles for ears. Don't draw the ears right on the top but a little lower.

Use another circle in the bottom half to start the muzzle. Just mark off the place for now. We will come back to it later.

Eyes:
The eyes are about halfway down. The top of the eyes are shaped like an arch slanted down, and the bottom of the eyes are curved upward. The pupils are black, and the iris is yellow or white, shade the area around the iris dark grey.

Muzzle:
Erase the top of the circle that makes the muzzle and shade in the bottom to make the mouth. The nose is like a letter "U" with some darker circles for the nostrils; it is mostly black.

Ears:
Round off the triangles for the ears; the rest is shading- see below.

Fur:
Start by doing the lightest area first, then the darkest last. You can soften the fur by rubbing the pencil marks with a tissue or your finger.
Wolves all have some differences in the markings. It is a good idea to find a picture to use as a model before you begin to do the fur. The fur is not so hard. Just use the "Cheek" of the pencil, not the tip, and shade the fur out and away from the center of the face.
Use medium pencils like a 4b for the light grey shadows and a dark pencil like a 6b for the really dark areas. Some places on the wolf's fur are white, such as his beard area it is like his chin and cheeks. Some wolves have a white eyebrow or a white spot above the eye.
The fur forms patterns observe them carefully and try to follow them.

Below is a sketch I did of a wolf. I used markers with different hues of grey. It seemed right to use grey and black for the wolf. I did this in about an hour. If I spent a few more hours on it, it would look great, but I had to go. So If you take your time, you will be able to draw a better picture than I did.
