Free How to Draw The Old Time Prospector Worksheet

I create these how-to worksheets because I believe in giving back and that when you have been blessed, you should seek to be a blessing to others. These worksheets take hours or even days to create, and I hope they are a blessing to you.
Thank you!

Here is a file that may print better on some printers.

YOU MAY PRINT THE ART LESSON NOTES BELOW.

BEGINNING
Start out by drawing lightly at first so you can erase later.
Keep it simple at the beginning.
Use a basic stick figure to work out the pose.
Use a guideline across the shoulders to keep them level. Use a guideline across the waist to keep the elbows on the level.

DEVELOPING
After you have the pose the way you want it, then draw around the stick figure to give the body its shape and then draw the clothes over that.

The head is an oval. Do not draw the hat until you get the features in the right place. Use three guidelines to help place the eyes, nose, and mouth. The first guideline is halfway across. The second is halfway down from the first, the third is halfway down from the second.

Draw the hat through the top of the head, not above it.

DETAILS
Keep the hands simple. Draw around the stick figure fingers. They are gloves,     so they can be fat and shapeless mittens.

FACE
Go over the oval shape of the face to give sharpness to the jaw and cheeks. Keep the face simple. The nose is like a letter "V," The mouth is a few lines. The eyes are two arches with dark half-circles for the pupil. Make the hat uneven like it is old and beaten up; this will give the drawing character.

Erase the extra lines and rework the lines you like. It may be a good idea to trace the design onto another paper to finish the project. Many artists do this, sometimes two or more times on a project.

FINISH
Color or shade the line drawing after you finish. When you color or shade in the picture, look for areas that you can leave white for contrast. Be careful to have some very dark areas and some very light areas, and some medium-dark areas.

I hope you create a masterpiece!

Thank You

BEGINNING
Start out by drawing lightly at first so you can erase later.
Keep it simple at the beginning.
It is ok to use tracing paper and trace it over a few times until you have it right.
Use a basic stick figure to work out the pose.
This project has two figures one is carrying another. You may have to practice and draw them separately at first then combine them into one composition.

DEVELOPING
After you have the pose the way you want it then draw around the stick figure to give the body its shape and then draw the clothes over.

DETAILS
Keep the hands simple, think of drawing them like mittens. Remember, thumbs point inward on hands facing down and thumbs point outward on hands pointing up.

Keep the face simple, the nose and eyebrow form a letter "S" Use a short line for the upper lip and a shorter line for the lower lip. The eyes are two slightly curving lines since the wounded man is not awake and the hero is watching his step.

Color or shade the line drawing after you finish.

Do not forget to put in the background like a battle scene or a dead monster. Draw the ground around the hero's feet so he doesn't look like he is floating.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later.
Use an articulated stick figure to get the pose right, an articulated stick figure has elbows and knees hips, and other joints.

After you have the pose right then go around the stick figure to give it the form of a body.

The hand only shows the thumb. Draw it as straight lines on the backside of the hand and thumb and curved lines on the palm side.

Keep the face simple. Use a guideline down the center to keep both sides of the face even. Use a guideline across the middle to know where to put the eyes.  She is looking down so just draw the eyes as curving lines The nose is only a line on one side and a shadow underneath. The mouth is a shadow for the upper lip and a shorter shadow under the lower lip. the neck connects at the back of the head by the ear.

THE DRESS
Draw the dress after you have the form of the body right.
The dress should be tight at the waist. The dress flows with the body and should look like it is turning with her so start with guidelines to show which way the dress is turning.

The ruffles are in three or more rows. Use guidelines first to plan where they are. Draw rounded zig-zag lines for the ruffles then. Starting at the top of each rounded curve draw short lines going up following the direction of the flow of the dress.

Use shading technique to give the dancer roundness. Put shadows under the ruffles.

If you color the picture remember the traditional Spanish dancer wears a red dress.

You are welcome to print as many as you like.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Start with an articulated stick figure, that is a stick figure with the major joints- it looks like a skeleton. Draw the head as an oval. Since Poincianas was a youth we draw her head a little bigger than an adult might have been.  One shoulder is higher than the other.  One leg is straight down and the other is crossing behind it as if she is walking. The forward leg is more centered as she is putting her weight on it. The foot is a large circle at the heel and a smaller one at the ball connected by a line.

FILLING HER IN
Over the stick figure draw ovals to build up the thickness of the arms and legs. The shoulders taper down slightly and are slightly rounded where at the shoulder joint. The bicep (upper arm muscle) is short and rounded, the triceps (at the back of the arm) is long. The arms are narrower at the wrist. Draw an oval for the calf muscle but the front of the leg is straight. Go around the shapes to give the lines a graceful flow.

FACE
Keep the face simple. Use guidelines to keep things even. One guideline goes down the center but slightly to the side since she is turned a little. Use a guideline halfway across for the eyes, then halfway between the eyes to the chin for the nose, and halfway from the nose to the chin for the mouth.
FAR EDGES.
She is turned slightly so the far cheek is showing. Start with straight lines; Down and out slightly for the edge of the forehead, curved in slightly for the eye socket, out sharply for the cheek, down and inward for the far jaw and sharply up and back to the ear for the near jaw.
EYES.
Use a curving line for the top of the upper eyelid and draw a circle below it for the eye, the top of the circle will be cut off by the upper eyelid.  The eyebrow is an arch that is thicker near the nose and thinner as it goes toward the edge of the face.
NOSE
The nose is turned up slightly since she is still young. Start with a long line from the eyebrow and go down and out, then a short line back in. Keep a space between the nose and the lip.
MOUTH
The upper lip is all shadow. it is like the letter "M" spread out.  The lower lip is indicated only with a short curved shadow underneath.
HANDS
Keep the hand simple. If your drawing is small just draw them like mittens. If you have space to give the hands detail use the method described above of drawing a hand skeleton first and then going around the lines to fill them out.
FEET
Go around the circles and lines of the stick figure to get the basic shape of the foot, and add a few lines as if the stitches of moccasins.

CLOTHING AND STUFF
Historical resources show the Indians of that time wearing simple leather skirts or toga style dress, so keep it simple to be historically accurate. There were simple patterns painted on their clothes. The is evidence that they wore a band around the head with feathers on the front. The bodies were painted or tattooed with circles, dots, and lines. The skirt would have a split on the sides so she could run and hunt.

DO THE HAIR LAST
Give her long black hair that has some shiny areas in it.

CLICK HERE to go to a PDF file that may work better with newer printers.

PRINTABLE NOTES

FIRST STEPS
Begin by drawing lightly so you can erase later. Draw the basic shape of the wagon as two rectangles since it is viewed at an angle, but these are not true rectangles since they taper slightly on the outside to allow for perspective. The top is begun as two circles connected by a line at the top. Some will be erased later.

Draw a guideline for the ground so the wheels and steps all lineup.

Add two circles for the wheels. One is bigger than the other since the smaller on is on a turning axle and is lower to the ground. The wheels are below the wagon and not beside. Draw the wheels as two circles so there is an inside edge and an outside edge.

The door has a curved top. Use a long horizontal guideline for the bottom of the shutters and the top of the bottom of the dutch door.

The steps are curved.

ADDING DETAILS
Add a hub cone at the center of each wheel. There are six to eight spokes.
Draw the shutters on the door as half arches pointing away from each other.
The door bottom is divided into sections, draw them as squares.
The side of the wagon has wood squares.
Use two lines to draw each step.
The back has wood slats going up and down draw them as vertical parallel lines.
There is a stovepipe that looks like the letter "T" coming out of the top.
Under the wagon are wooden axles and scissor springs, draw the axles like long rectangles and the scissor springs like the letter "V" sideways

FINISHING TOUCHES
Put drapes in the window. Draw a person standing inside looking out. Have some camp stuff sitting around like a campfire, buckets, pots, and pans.
Draw a background like a row of bushes and a row of trees. Have some tree branches and leaves hanging over the wagon.

PRINTABLE NOTES

BEGINNING
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later.

Draw an articulated stick figure to give him the right pose. The stick figure should have joints at the knees and elbows. The figure is sideways with one foot forward toward you and one arm out toward you, it will look short but that is perspective. The other arm back out of view.  The head is low and the chin almost touching the shoulder.

DEVELOP FORM
After you have the basic pose worked out then go around the stick figure and draw the shapes of the arms, legs, and body. Keep drawing lightly or be ready to trace onto fresh paper.

CLOTHING
The leggings are tight on his skin. The boots go almost to the knees and have a flap folding over the top. The shirt doesn't show except for the collar and the sleeve on the arm facing forward. The leather jerkin over the shirt has rectangular fringes on the waist and the shoulder. A belt goes around the waist, another belt goes over the shoulder to the sword.

FACE
Keep the face simple. Give him a short pointy beard. Draw a line under the lower lip for the shadow. Use a dash for the eyebrows. Draw a thin line for the eyes, with a dot at the outside near tip so it looks like he is looking at you.  The face is turned slightly away so the nose is to one side and the far eye is partly hidden.

Hand the hand starts out boxy. The thumb points up, draw three short lines inside the boxy shape from the outer edge to halfway across, it will look like fingers

DETAILS
The far hand is almost hidden from view just draw a curving line for the top shape and a line for the fingers.

Take your time with the weapons. Draw the curve of the bow all the way, after you have the length and curve right go back and draw the tapering shape of the bow. The sword is almost at the back. Take your time with it. Don't try to draw every arrow in the quiver just give the basic shape and the impression of a lot of arrows.

Use a lot of color, mostly browns and greens with black for accents. Use shading technique to give it roundness.

I hope you create a masterpiece!

The beard covers the lower part of the face make it long and wavy.

The robe has a rope belt.
Make the robe ragged at the end and shadow the part behind.
The sandals have only one strap over the top. Don't draw all the toes just the big toe.
Make the staff with a lot of short choppy lines so it has texture and looks woody.

There is a rope around his waist, give it a lot of texture.
Give the clothing some rips and holes.
Give the face some wrinkles.
Use shadowing to give the figure some roundness.

I have kept this simple for the young artist. There is more than one way to draw an old face but many people like this method. Drawing a dramatic face takes time and practice, so draw a picture every day. I have other projects like this, so come back often and try a few more, and soon you will be making beautiful pictures.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Use a guideline up and down to keep the face even on both sides. Draw a circle for the top two-thirds and a large "U" for the jaw. Use a guideline across about halfway down to keep the eyes level.
Draw the rectangles for the glasses early on in the project. They are on the cheeks and low on the nose.
The cheeks are like bracket symbols, one on one side and one on the other.

DEVELOPMENT
The ears are like large peanut shapes on either side of the head.
The eyes are not drawn open but half-closed with the upper eyelid covering the top third of the iris, this will give him expression.
The eyebrows point up and outward.
The chin is like a long narrow letter "U."
The jaw is like another broader letter "U" behind the chin.
The mouth is like a long downward-pointing letter "M."
The nose is a long letter "U."

DETAILS
The eyebrows will be bushy. Use short choppy lines on the top and bottom to draw them leave the center white.
On both sides of the nose is a mark like a parenthesis ( ) for the nostril, but the nose dips past them.
Use short straight lines to draw the top of the eyelid and the wrinkle over the top of the eye. Draw only part of the bottom eyelid, just a couple of dashes or will do.
The upper lip is a thin shadow, the lower lip is a thicker shadow underneath. It is like a "W" that is pointing downward at the outside.

FINISHING TOUCHES.
The hair comes out from the sides and goes down behind his back.
The clothing is a big black coat. The collar goes right up to the ears.  There is a stiff collar of a shirt and a bow underneath.
Use shading to give the effect of roundness.

Sometimes, it takes me hours to create these how-to-draw worksheets, but I do it so that I can give back. I believe that when you have been given a gift, it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you.

Thank You!

There are more ways to draw a face, but this is simple and ideal for young artists.  Drawing a beautiful face takes practice, so draw every day, and soon you will be making beautiful pictures.  I have other projects like this, so come back often and try a few more.  If your artwork is not perfect this time, do not give up. Just keep at it, and you will be making perfection before too long.

BEGINNINGS
Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later. Draw an oval for the head, then divide up the oval with guidelines vertical in the center, and another one horizontal halfway down. The guidelines help keep things even and not crooked.

DEVELOPMENT
The eyes are on the halfway mark, they are about as far apart as they are each wide. The top of the eyes are an arch but the bottom curves up and down and back up. The eyes are outlined in dark. Draw the shiny spot before you draw the iris or pupal. Use a line above the eye to show the fold of the eyelid.
The nose is wide, use two lines like a parenthesis for the wider parts and two curving dashes for the shadow below.
The lips are three lines. Draw the one in the middle first, it is like a flattened letter "v," the bottom lip is a wide curve, like the letter "U" the upper lip is like a flat letter "M"
The Neck is wide and the shoulders slope downward slightly.

TURBAN, CROWN, NECKLACE
The turban is a folded cloth and can be a lot of wiggly lines over the top of the head going around the head like a frame. The crown can be simple just two lines across the turban. There are gold coins hanging down off of the crown and turban, draw them as circles.
The necklace is a bunch of lines that go around the neck. Use guidelines to keep things even and straight.
The hair is black but put some shiny lines in it.

Use shading technique to give the face a rounded look.

Start with a stick figure that is articulated at the joints like elbows and knees. At this point, we are just trying to get the pose.

After you are happy with the pose, fill out the body with lines around the stick figure. Imagine the stick figure is a skeleton, and the lines around it are the muscle.

DESIGN TECHNIQUE
Come up with a unique and original suit that is both space suit and armor scribble all over the drawing you have made so far. It is like you are trying to ruin the drawing. Look at the scribbles, then choose the lines that you like. Go over these favorite lines and work them into the suit of space armor.

Erase the extra lines.

FINISHING TOUCHES.
Use random shapes to design a weapon.
Use shadow technique to give roundness.

BEGINNINGS
Use the stick figure technique to draw a man standing. Use circles for the major joints and bend the arm at the elbow. Add in the line for the spear and a large rectangle for the shield.

DEVELOP FORM
Around the stick figure add the thickness of the arm and the leg. Draw the torso as a boxy rectangle.

HELMET AND ARMOR
The helmet is a half-circle on top. It has a bold line across the brow. The helmet has two side guards that cover the cheeks, they are drawn with curved lines. Behind the helmet is a neck guard, only the edges show out of the sides like narrow triangles.
The body armor is a series of rectangles that come over the shoulder and another set of rectangles that wrap the body. They have buckles in the middle.
The kilt looks like a skirt that goes almost to the knee. It is leather strips that look like long rectangles

HAND
The hand is wrapped around the spear so you are looking at the back of the hand. Draw it like a square but curved outward no the side toward the solder. The thumb is on the backside of the spear just draw a half circle where it comes across.

WEAPONS
The spear has two parts, the wooden shaft, and the metal lance. Use a ruler or straight edge to draw this so it looks good.
The short sword hangs on a belt that comes down from behind the shield. The sword is a rectangle and goes from the waist to the knee, at the bottom is a triangle. The hilt is simple, a circle on the top, the grip curves inward slightly and there is a short crosspiece.
The shield has a metal edge, draw the edge as two parallel lines that go around the shield. In the middle of the shield is a metal round piece, draw it as a circle with a square around it. The shields were decorated, so draw lightning bolts or eagles or lions on it.

FACE
Keep the face simple. Make the jaw and chin square. Draw eyebrows as a thick straight line. Draw the eyes as straight lines with dots below. The nose is a line going down and over a little bit. The mouth is a straight line with a little downward dash at the end.

FEET
The feet are like rectangles but a little pointed on the large toe. The sandals have three straps going over and two straps wrapping around the ankle.

Draw the cape last.

BEGINNING
The guard is a simple figure of an adult. Start with a stick figure to get the height and proportions right. Do not draw the uniform or the hat at this time. The shoulders are wide and the waist is narrow the feet are spread slightly apart. The right arm, (which is on the viewer's left), is slightly bent. Draw a guideline for the weapon.

DEVELOP THE FORM
Around the stick figure draw the form of the man.

FACE
The hat covers everything above the eyebrows. The strap of the hat goes over the face and under the lower lip, so the chin shows below the strap. The eyes are straight ahead. Keep the face simple.

UNIFORM
The jacket has a white belt at the middle slightly above the waist. The collar has golden leaves on the sides but in the small drawing just do a triangle-ish shape and color black around it. The sleeves have square decorations going down at the cuff. There is a black background at the cuff. There are buttons to the right of the seam. The shoulders have golden decorations across the top. Many guards have medals won for bravery in combat, draw it as a circle with a triangle above and a thin rectangle above that. The pants are black.

HANDS
The hand holding the weapon is a line for the thumb that goes inward and back, the fingers is two lines that make it look like the letter C laying down. The other hand is mostly hidden by the sleeve but a line can show the fingers facing inward.

The shoes are very black and very shiny, so before you color them in outline a few shiny spots and make sure you leave them white.

I hope you create a masterpiece!

Our version of St Patrick has a short bishop's hat and a beard. The temptation is to draw them too soon and not have a well-developed face as a result, so save the beard and hat until the face is satisfactory.

BEGINNINGS
Start drawing light so you can erase later. Draw the basic shape of the face as an egg or oval. Draw three guidelines across the face. The first will divide the face in half from the top to the bottom, here is where we will position the eyes. Draw another guideline halfway frrm the first to the bottom for the nose and draw one more from that to the bottom for the mouth. Use a guideline down the center to help keep things even.

FACE
EYES. The eyes touch the bottom of the first guideline, they are evenly spaced apart and have as much space between them as they are wide. The iris are circles, draw them completely then draw a curving line over the top of them for the upper lid. There are a lot of wrinkles around the eyes since he is old.
NOSE. The bottom of the nose dips down so start it as a "U" shape. On both sides draw parenthesis ( ). Use shadow technique to shade under the nose and on the side of the face away from the light. The ridge of the nose is narrow but do not draw it- use shadow technique on the side away from the light to indicate this.
MOUTH.   The upper lip is covered by the mustache so only the bottom lip showing. The bottom lip is like two ovals sideways that partly overlap in the middle. The bottom is in shadow so use shading technique.
EARS. The ears are partly hidden by the long hair only the bottom lobs show they are just a pair of curving lines
WRINKLES. There are deep wrinkles around the mouth, and light wrinkles under the eyes, beside the eyes, between the eyes, and across the forehead.

BEARD AND HAIR
The beard is a series of wavy lines going down to an pair of uneven points. The hair is wavy and starts on the forehead above the eyebrows and go out to beside the ears and curls under below the ears. Draw the hair with wavy lines.

SHADING
The light comes from one side and makes shadows on the other this give it depth.

CLOTHING
The bishops hat is shaped like a diamond. It is divided in third with a cross in the middle. Color it green. He has a robe and a cloak they are green with white.
