How To Draw Craggy Distant Mountains

This is a free printable how-to-draw worksheet for craggy mountains.

Here is a how-to-draw craggy distant mountains worksheet that will help the young artist develop skills at drawing a basic feature of a landscape and push him beyond mere triangles in the background.

There is more than one way to do anything, and I use different methods in my drawings. This method is a favorite of mine and has served me well in creating many pictures.

PRINTABLE NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Remember, you are not drawing a mountain but a range of mountains. Some will be in the background behind others, and little hills will be low in the middle ground.

 Use short straight jagged lines to scribble shapes that are slightly triangular in shape. Keep them in different sizes and shapes.  One should be higher than the others it should be near the center if they are all the same height it would be boring.

Draw the middle ground hills as long wavy lines.  Draw the meadow in the foreground as a straight line.

DEVELOPING THE FORM.
Use short choppy jagged lines to work out the many cliffs and folds of the mountain.
Use shorter jagged lines to mark off the snow caps on the tops of the mountains. Do not just make them straight but give them an interesting shape.

SHADING AND TEXTURE
Decide which side the sun is on, and take your time to add the shadows on the opposite side of each mountain. Use dots, small scribble marks and short choppy lines to give the sides of the mountains some texture. The farthest mountains will be lighter and not have much texture.

The rolling hills have trees on top, and the meadow has a line of trees where they meet the hills. Draw these with short up and down scribbly marks.

PRINTABLE NOTES. 

Start by drawing lightly so you can erase later.

BEGINNING
Start by drawing an articulated stick figure, that is a stick figure that has the joints like wrist, elbows, knees.  Use a guideline so the foot and knee both touch the ground or else one will be higher than the other.
The head is an oval.

Take your time to make sure you get the pose right.

After the pose is made right, draw around the stick figure to fill out the body, use curved lines to show muscles.

DETAILS
The face is in profile start it as a curved line. Halfway down make a guideline for the eyes, below that, make two more for the nose and mouth. Use straight lines to give the face a rugged look. The eye is tilted down and only a little part of the pupil shows under the upper eyelid to make him look like he is looking up.

The hand has the thumb on top and four fingers wrapped around the sword. The back of the hand is slightly curved, the fingers are not the same length. The fingertips are slightly square.

ARMOR
Draw the armor around the body. The elbows and knees are a series of triangles. The shield looks like an upside-down teardrop. Use a ruler to keep the lines of the sword straight. Practice the dragon on a separate piece of paper and trace it onto the shield.

Finish the story. He could be pledging his sword to God, or king, or a beautiful maiden. Work out the story on another piece of paper and then trace in into the picture.

PROJECT NOTES.

BEGINNING

Start by drawing a large circle for the top of the bell and an oval horizontally underneath. Add a few lines to connect the two to make the basic shape of the bell. Don't forget the clapper- the circle inside the oval.
Draw a larger circle for the arch of the bell wall and crossbar for the bell to hang from; a few short choppy lines will give the bar a rough wood look, don't forget the shadow underneath. 

After getting the bell and arch established, take a moment and look things over to make sure it is even and square.

DEVELOPING FORM
Make the stone wall by first drawing very lightly some horizontal lines to serve as a "grid" for the stones to be drawn in. Make sure the light reference lines are straight. Draw each stone slowly and carefully. Leave spaces between the stones; this will look like the mortar holding them together.

DETAILS Make a shadow under the bottom of each stone; this will make them look three-dimensional.
Shadow in the areas that need it, such as the inside of the bell, and use a gradual deepening shadow to make the bell look round.

If you are working with color, I suggest the stone can be some pale red and orange.  Make the sky beyond the bell a pale blue and the bell itself green.  Erase any leftover marks.

PRINTABLE NOTES

The drawbridge is like a door with a wooden road going to it.

BEGINNING
Draw a line for the bottom and a line for the top of the wall.
Draw an arch for the door in the castle wall. Use a vanishing point inside the arch for the lines of the drawbridge to reach. You do not draw all the way to the vanishing point it is just a reference point.
The drawbridge is four lines that are like a triangle with the top cut off. It is wider at the bottom than at the top because of perspective.
Draw guidelines for the pull chains.
Use a couple of lines to draw the half-open doors.

DEVELOPING FORM
Use guidelines for the stones that make the wall. The guidelines will go straight across the wall and around the arch. Draw lightly so you can erase later.
Draw circles on the guideline for the pull chain.
Draw a grid at the top of the arch for the Portcullis, (the bars that drop down from the top).
Draw circles for the pull rings and lines for the hinges.

DETAILS
Trace around the grid for the bars so they look thick and heavy.
The bridge has planks going across it. Use several vertical lines, but they get closer together nearer the top.
Give texture to the bridge and doors with short choppy lines.
For the moat use jagged lines from the bottom of the castle going down to the water.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Use shading technique to darken the inside of the doorway.
Give texture to the stones by using dots or smudges. Do not make the stones nearest the arch dark keep them light for contrast.
Make the bars a dark shade, the hinges chains, and pulls dark too.

Draw something like pillars or towers on each side of the drawbridge to separate it from the rest of the wall.

Draw something inside like buildings or knights.

Fill the moat with water, don't forget the crocodiles!

PRINTABLE NOTES

Begin with some guidelines so everything will be straight. This is a very important step.
Draw a line going up and down for the shaft of the candelabra this is just a guideline. Draw a straight line across the top where the arms will end this will help make all the arms come to the same level and not look crooked. Mark where the arms will end and where they will come out of the shaft.

Draw a line for each of the arms from each side to the top guideline. They should curve gently in a "U".  At the top guideline draw a large letter "U"s for the little bowls where the flame or candle will come out of. use the guideline so they are even. Draw circles below each cup keep it between the guidelines. Draw triangles below the circles, keep them even with the guideline.

Draw a circle where the arms connect to the shaft. Go around the lines of the shaft and the arms to give them thickness.

The Star is done with two triangles, one over the other. Draw the triangles then go around them to make it thick.

Use basic shapes for the base like triangles and rectangles.

Add candles or flames each day.

Printable How to draw a Tree in Silhouette Worksheet

How to draw a tree in silhouette worksheet and lesson notes.

This is a simple picture to draw and looks great with a colored sky; like sunset colors and pale blues, lavenders, and violets in the background. A watercolor wash would work well. There is no middle ground to worry about. 

This is one of my favorite projects. It really looks nice when you have bright sunset colors behind it.

LESSON NOTES

BACKGROUND
Draw the valley with just some simple wavy lines horizontally across the back. Be careful that you don't go too high up it will become distracting and amateurish. 

COMPOSITION
Normally I would never suggest that you put the point of interest in the middle of a picture but this is a very simple composition and that is about the only time a point of interest works in the middle.  

THE TREE
Draw the basic shape of the foreground hill with a sketch pencil. Keep it simple. Outline the trunks of the trees with the pencil and outline the leaves area. Begin to block in the trees completely and evenly. If you are using charcoal this would be easy but keep the application smooth. Block in the leaves but keep the edges irregular like individual leaves. Remember the branches and leaves go up and out. 

DETAILS
Keep some areas open for interest. You may want to add a few twigs crossing through the open areas. 

FINISHING TOUCHES
To finish, black in the foreground hill by using upward strokes of the pencil to give the effect of grass, but leave a few areas white for interest.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
There are many ways to start but to help develop the pose of the child holding a crutch start with a stick figure with joints like knees, shoulders, and elbows.
The arm will be crossing over the chest so he can hold the crutch.
One of the shoulders will be higher than the other.
The child's head is larger than normal.
The legs are shorter than normal

DEVELOPING FORM
Draw around the stick figure to fill out the body.

HEAD
Remember the child's head has more forehead than an adult, but in our drawing, it is covered with bangs and the old-time hat. The nose mouth and eyes are closer together than an adult.
Keep it simple:
Use a guideline up and down to keep things even.
The eyes are two dots under the arch of the upper eyelid. The eyebrows are a simple curved line. Put a little shiny dot in the eyes to make them look shiny.
The nose is a "button nose" Draw an arch and give it two dashes sideways for the nostrils, (do not go up and down or make circles or it will look like a pig nose).
The mouth is a curved line going up it is wide expressing a contented grin. The lower lip is just a shadow draw it as a dash.
Do the hat and hair last. The hair is straight and sticks out at the sides.

HANDS
If the hands are a problem draw them like mittens since Tiny Tim wore mittens in the snow. Remember the thumbs go up and are at the backside of the crutch.

CLOTHES
Do the clothes last. Use a lot of curving lines in the pants.
Draw a brace on the leg, it is mostly straight lines. It is a part of the story.
The jacket is too small for him, so draw the waist-high and his shirt sticking out. The jacket has a big collar, it goes right up to the back of the head. It is drawn with double curves. there are patches on the elbows.
There are buttons on the pants, (the zipper was not invented yet.) There are patches on the pants, draw them like squares.
Use a lot of scratchy short lines to make the crutch look like wood. Do not make the crutch straight but give it a couple of bends.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Start with an articulated stick figure, that is a stick figure with the major joints- it looks like a skeleton. Draw the head as an oval. Since Poincianas was a youth we draw her head a little bigger than an adult might have been.  One shoulder is higher than the other.  One leg is straight down and the other is crossing behind it as if she is walking. The forward leg is more centered as she is putting her weight on it. The foot is a large circle at the heel and a smaller one at the ball connected by a line.

FILLING HER IN
Over the stick figure draw ovals to build up the thickness of the arms and legs. The shoulders taper down slightly and are slightly rounded where at the shoulder joint. The bicep (upper arm muscle) is short and rounded, the triceps (at the back of the arm) is long. The arms are narrower at the wrist. Draw an oval for the calf muscle but the front of the leg is straight. Go around the shapes to give the lines a graceful flow.

FACE
Keep the face simple. Use guidelines to keep things even. One guideline goes down the center but slightly to the side since she is turned a little. Use a guideline halfway across for the eyes, then halfway between the eyes to the chin for the nose, and halfway from the nose to the chin for the mouth.
FAR EDGES.
She is turned slightly so the far cheek is showing. Start with straight lines; Down and out slightly for the edge of the forehead, curved in slightly for the eye socket, out sharply for the cheek, down and inward for the far jaw and sharply up and back to the ear for the near jaw.
EYES.
Use a curving line for the top of the upper eyelid and draw a circle below it for the eye, the top of the circle will be cut off by the upper eyelid.  The eyebrow is an arch that is thicker near the nose and thinner as it goes toward the edge of the face.
NOSE
The nose is turned up slightly since she is still young. Start with a long line from the eyebrow and go down and out, then a short line back in. Keep a space between the nose and the lip.
MOUTH
The upper lip is all shadow. it is like the letter "M" spread out.  The lower lip is indicated only with a short curved shadow underneath.
HANDS
Keep the hand simple. If your drawing is small just draw them like mittens. If you have space to give the hands detail use the method described above of drawing a hand skeleton first and then going around the lines to fill them out.
FEET
Go around the circles and lines of the stick figure to get the basic shape of the foot, and add a few lines as if the stitches of moccasins.

CLOTHING AND STUFF
Historical resources show the Indians of that time wearing simple leather skirts or toga style dress, so keep it simple to be historically accurate. There were simple patterns painted on their clothes. The is evidence that they wore a band around the head with feathers on the front. The bodies were painted or tattooed with circles, dots, and lines. The skirt would have a split on the sides so she could run and hunt.

DO THE HAIR LAST
Give her long black hair that has some shiny areas in it.

PRINTABLE NOTES

BEGINNINGS
Start with the horizon (the line where the sky meets the earth), or in our case, the distant sea. The horizon should never be in the middle of the picture; it should be above the halfway point. This is the only straight line you have to worry about.

Draw a line for the top of the wave going across the picture.  The top of the wave should curve up and down at least once.

Draw the line for the rollover part of the wave; it will start at the top and curve down in a slight half circle.  The line will continue across the picture and meet the other side of the rollover, where it will go up.

Draw a line where the beach and the ocean meet. It should not be straight but curve up and down slightly.

DEVELOPMENT
The crashing wave has foam and splash at the bottom; draw a scribble pattern for the foam. The foam is three-dimensional with a front edge, a middle ground, and a background; design these by scribbling a second and third row of scribbles.

The ocean is darker than the wave, so dark lines go back and forth behind the wave.

Add clouds in the sky beyond the horizon. Shade in the sky for contrast.

DETAILS
The bottom edge of the foam is in shadow and darker. The bottom inside the wave is darker than the top of the inside of the wave.

Use a lot of circular lines to make the foam look foamy.

There are lines at the bottom in front of the wave where the water is going back from the beach to the wave, These lines criss-cross. They are darker on the bottom and lighter on the top.

SHADING
Shade everything except the splash and foam. The water is dark just above the wave and gets lighter as it goes back to the horizon.

PRINTABLE NOTES.

BEGINNINGS
Start with the line of the back. It is shaped like a long"S."  Draw a circle to get the size of the head. Remember to draw lightly so you can erase later.

Draw a curving line for the chest going from the chin to halfway down the first line.  Add a line for the Left side of the bottom half of the body.  The top ridge fin is like a long twisted line, this line follows the "S" line and crosses over it.

DEVELOPING FORM
The tail is a half-circle between the line of the back and the lower body.
The tip of the nose curves up.
The eye is center and a little forward.
The back of the head curves inward.
The fins are three lines curving that form a triangle
There are two whiskers between the eye and the nose.

DETAILS
The scales go in rows draw guidelines first and use the guidelines to keep the scales even.  The scales are smaller as they go nearer the tail, and are smaller as they near the tail.
There are lines in the fins.
