How To Draw The Three Wise Men. Lesson and Worksheet

This is a how-to-draw the Three Wise Men lesson.

This free printable drawing worksheet is an art lesson that is a little more complicated on the surface, but it is a fun, and rewarding project after you have the basic design worked out.

The how-to-draw the three wise men worksheet may be printed by highlighting it and sending it to your printer or saving it to your device and printing later. Some people have better luck by dragging the image off to the desktop and printing from there. PRINTABLE NOTES

Start by drawing lightly at first so you can change things and erase them later.

BASIC FACE
Make each head a different shape, one can be oval, one egg-shaped, and one can be an upside-down teardrop shape. Have the one in the middle taller than the other two. Use a guideline up and down the center of each head so things can be kept even. Use another guideline across the center so the eyes will not be too high or low. Lightly draw these guidelines since you will want to erase them later.

DETAILS
Keep the details simple. Draw the crowns and hats last so you can focus on making good portraits. Draw the eyes curving downward like a bowl or a letter "u" because the wise men are looking down at the baby Jesus.  This is the only thing they have in common, make every face different.

Here are a few ideas.
     * Give one face bushy eyebrows and one no eyebrows at all.
     * Give one curly hair and make one bald.
     * Give one a beard and make one without a beard.
     * Give one a nose like a long letter "V" and give one a fat nose like three circles.
     * Give one a black beard and one a white beard.
     * Make the ears shaped like peanuts on one and kidney beans on the other.
     * Give one baggy shadow under the eyes.
     * Give one smile wrinkles.

HANDS
Start drawing them lightly like mittens without detail. Remember, the thumbs are pointing outward since the hands are palm up. After you have the general mitten shape, then draw three lines up and down to divide the fingers. Erase the outline of the mitten and add the fingernails.

GIFTS
The jar of incense is round, the box of spice is square, and the bag of gold, it is lumpy and round.

Make the robes simple. In my example, at the bottom, I drew it in a light pencil; afterward, I used a fine-tipped marker and went over my pencil, then erased the pencil. I finished it with watercolor. The copier guy only charges a little extra for color, and it makes a lovely half-fold Christmas card.

Worksheet from Drawing Lesson How to Draw a Catapult

To see more how to draw worksheets like this, search the sidebar.

There were hundreds of designs in ancient and medieval times, so you can make any changes you want.

Tip: to add realism in your drawing, make sure the lines are parallel on the post, brace, wagon, arm, etc.

Start by drawing lightly so you can erase it later without damaging the paper. Draw a rectangle for the base of the wagon. You are drawing it from an angle, so be careful to keep those lines parallel. Next, draw circles for the four wheels. You might trace around a lid, a jar, or a coin to make the circles a round shape.

Draw the two posts that hold up the throwing arm. These posts are like tall skinny rectangles but use the third line to give the side view and dimension. Draw the arm and the brace the same way. Use short choppy lines to give the wood grain effect.

Draw a second circle around the wheels for the iron rims and a little circle in the middle for the hub. Add lines across the wheels for the wood grain. You can add nails or screws around the rim.

Draw the chain in steps. Outline it lightly, then go over it darkly for the iron.

Draw the rocks as a bunch of circles, then add rough edges to the circles, finish the rocks with dots and dashes, so they look rough and ragged. Put grass all around, and remember to add shadows underneath.

In the example below, I added a few extras like a chain holding the arm down and an iron bar across the wagon's deck and on the side. You can add your own touches like spikes or armor or weapons, maybe a soldier sleeping against the wheel.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Start by drawing lightly so you can make changes as needed and you will want to erase some of the lines as you go along.

The body is like an upside-down teardrop pointed at the bottom and rounded at the top.

The head is like a circle but the back of the head continues down to the back of the bird. The beak is slightly longer than it is thick.

The shoulder starts as a circle just under the head and forward a bit toward the chest. You will erase the back part of the circle later, now it is just to help you put things in the right place.

The tail feathers are just four lines. Two lines for the back and the front they are almost straight but curve out away from each other just a little bit. The other two lines of the tail are curved inward one overlaps the other leaving a little upside down "V" where they touch.

The legs are drawn with short straight lines. The back leg is straight, and the claw is like a skinny diamond. The front leg is shaped like a large backward "S". The front claw looks like the letter "C" drawn with straight lines looping over the branch. Draw it lightly so you can put the branch in.

The eye starts off as an arch, next draw a circle over it but with most of the circle under the arch, (then erase the circle showing above the arch. Draw in the shiny spot before you start to color the eye black, there is a little line of the cheekbone below the eye.

There are white spots on the bird's back, and white on the tip of the wing and on the tip of the tail feathers, mark them off early before you fill in the black areas.

The wings, the tail, and the top of the head are all back. The beak and the legs are orange, everything else is yellow.

Draw a branch for him to sit on, use short choppy lines to give it rough contrast. Make the background blue it will cause the yellow bird to really stand out.

How to Draw a Pilgrim Woman

This free drawing worksheet, How to Draw a Pilgrim Woman, is an easy drawing lesson and great for the beginner artist. This face is very simple, the focus is to keep proportions under control.

The worksheet may be printed by highlighting it and sending it to your printer or saving to your device and printing later. Some people have better luck by dragging the image to their desktop and printing from there. if you have problems see how to print tab above.

Worksheet from How to Draw a Pilgrim Woman's Face.

Our pilgrim lady has a soft gentle face so we are avoiding using a lot of lines.

Start with a circle, then draw the jaw and chin as a large curved "V" shape, so she will have a little pointed chin. Draw a line up and down the center so you can use it as a guide to keep things even.

The eyes are half way down from the top, the space between the eyes is no wider than the eyes themselves.

The nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin and is no wider than the space between the eyes.

The mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin.

Only the bottoms of the ears show, they are even with the nose.

Very little hair shows, just at the forehead and behind the neck.

Her neck is not wide; it starts just where the jaw curves in a little below the ears.

The hat is floppy, it has a band with small ruffles around the face and large folds above.  It has a ribbon tied under the chin.

Keep the features simple. Draw the upper eyelids as an arch. Draw the upper lip as a shadow. The nose is like two dashes with curves on each side.

Use shading to give the face soft roundness. Avoid extra lines since they will make her look old.

How To Draw A Pilgrim Man's Face. Worksheet

This free printable drawing worksheet is an easy and basic how-to sketch a face lesson.

This lesson and worksheet can be adapted to many historical persons.

The Pilgrim is often illustrated with the broad-brimmed hat that has a buckle on it and the black clothes with the white collar. In fact, black clothes were very expensive, so they were worn only on the most special occasions and by the wealthy. The daily clothes were the common homespun and hand-dyed in a number of colors.

You are welcome to print as many as you like.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Start with an oval head shape. Use a guide-line up and down in the center to keep things even. Draw lightly at first so you can erase later.

Outline the hat making sure the brim is almost as low as the eyebrows. Just outline it now and finish the hat and clothing last.

Draw the face with straight lines wherever you can, this will give him the rugged manly look.

The eyes are halfway down from the top. Mark off the shiny spots early so they don't get drawn over and lost. The eyebrows are bushy and wider than the eyes. The edge of the hat almost touches the eyebrows.

The tip of the nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin. Keep this nose simple. Only shadow one side, and underneath. The nose dips down and is a little wider than normal. There should be a slight shadow at the top of the nose under the eyebrow.

The mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin. The upper lip is just a shadow shape. The lower lip looks like a very spread-out letter "W" and is shadowed heavy.

The ears are almost even with the nose and the tops are hidden by the long hair.

The neck is almost as wide as the head, and the shoulders taper down slightly.

Don't get too frustrated over the collar and the clothes, there were different clothes in historical paintings showing a variety of collars, coats, capes, and shirts.

How To Draw A Troll Worksheet And Lesson

This free printable drawing worksheet, How To Draw a Troll, is a fun lesson for beginning artists and helps give them confidence in creating their own characters.

The worksheet may printed by highlighting it and sending it to your printer or saving to your device and printing later. Some people find it easier to drag the image to the desktop and print from there. If you have problems printing see the how to print tab above.

Worksheet How to Draw a Toll.

To see more projects search the list in the sidebar.

This lesson combines fantasy character drawing with storytelling. The story is in the expression, body position and the props; the props are the boxes of soap he is holding and the bubble bath behind the troll. The story of the picture is in a world, many young artists are content to draw their characters floating on a white page, but here they are encouraged to create an entire world illustrated by the forest.

The worksheet is limited to the character; the scene and story is left to the student.

It is easy to draw the troll using the jointed stick figure method. Make a stick figure like a skeleton. Draw circles for the joints like knees, elbows, hips, etc. You will erase some of this later, so draw lightly. You will draw the body around the stick figure.

Make the arms long and the legs short. Draw a series of ovals for the muscles. Draw the fingers like a skeleton hand at first, then draw the fingers around the lines.

His face is like a pig; the eyes are higher than normal.  The nose is a half-circle with two lines up and down. The mouth is a straight line with a shadow line underneath it. He has two tusks going up. His ears are pointed.

His belly is fat and hangs over his shorts. Don't forget the belly button.

I like to give my characters a world to live in and not just draw them on a page. It is best to make the picture say something like telling a story. My illustration of the troll tells a little humorous story. Can you figure it out?

How To Draw A Simple Rose. Lesson and Worksheet

Sometimes it takes me hours but I create these how to draw worksheets but I do it so that I can give back because I believe that when you have been given a gift it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you.

If the file above does not work for you the one below will be better it is a digital file called PDF.

CLICK HERE for a file in a universal portable format.

This is not a hard project as one would think; once you recognize the basic and simple shapes you just put them together and add details.

Start with a large "U" shape, with a small circle beneath. Draw this lightly so you can erase as needed later on. Outline the stem by drawing two lines one for each side of the stem.

Lightly draw the outline of the three leaves, they almost make a cross. The leaves are shaped like teardrops. For interest put one of the leaves behind the rose or the stem.

Going back to the rose petal, use three curved lines to make the petals, one going down from the left top, one starting halfway up from the first and the third going up to the top right. Draw three short wiggly lines on the top, together they will cross the top. There are four leaves under the blossom, they are like triangles going out and away with a little curve.  Now you may need to erase a few of the lines you did before.

The three leaves have veins going down the middle and veins going out to the sides from the one in the middle- don't make too many. The edge of the leaves have points all the way around draw about seven or eight on each side.

Use soft grey shadow and just a little dark grey shadow on the shady edge to make the rose look round.

How To Draw Stone Stairs, Lesson and Worksheet

This is a free printable drawing worksheet, How To Draw The Stone Stairs.

It is a good project that may be part of a fantasy or historical art piece. The stars could be in a dungeon or a castle, climbed by a hero, or descending by a monster.

Printable How To Draw Castle Stone Stairs worksheet

If the file above does not work for you, then the PDF below will be better.

CLICK HERE for a PDF formatted file.

Our project starts with an arch big enough for all the details inside.  Mark the vanishing point at eye level; all the vertical lines will tilt toward it.

The steps are bigger at the bottom; they get narrower and shorter as they progress up. The right side of the steps is drawn against the right wall, and the left side is hidden by the hidden arch since we are not looking directly into the stairwell but at an angle. The top of the stair wraps around, so we change direction and draw the left side of the steps, with the right side being hidden behind the right turn of the wall. These sides are drawn with lines going up then back along the guideline to the vanishing point. The front of the steps are tall, but the tops of the steps are narrow due to perspective. Divide the front of the steps into different stones,

Lightly mark a pattern on the wall by lines going toward the vanishing point, then draw some lines vertical and arching at the top; this makes a checker grid that you can use to develop the stones or the bricks of the walls. Draw around the grid to make individual stones make some to have different shapes.

The stars are dark and shadowy, so look for areas to give shadow, like the distant parts and the parts where walls come together or the bottom of the steps. Keep the top of the steps as white as you can.

How to Draw Stone Stairs.
Take your time and add detail to the stones with smudges and chips, Leave the spaces between the stones white for the mortar.

There will be more detail in the foreground, the front steps, and near walls than in the background.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

Pumpkins are round but not a circle. Draw the outline as a lopsided circle with the bottom mostly flat. Draw a second pumpkin outline in front of the other. These outlines can be a little lumpy shaped but don't overdo it.

The stem is not at the very top but a little lower, this gives perspective to the pumpkin. The stem is rough so draw it with little short choppy lines. Add shading to the shadow side with short choppy marks made with the "cheek" or side of the pencil. Do not shade in the top cut off part, it remains white. The bottom of the stem has little bumps like toes, sketch them in like circles with a shadow on one side.

The pumpkin has creases or folds in the sides. These creases are shaped like a bow without the string or arrow,  they start at the top then bend outward and then back into the bottom where they might touch. These creases often are a shadow but will have a highlight on the outside edge next to the shadow.

Remember to leave the highlights where the light is shining on the side of the pumpkin. Lightly outline the highlights before shading the shadow side of the pumpkin.

The shadows make it look round and real. Shadows come in very dark, dark, and gray. Do the very dark first at the bottom and the side away from the light. Then add the dark around the very dark and last lightly fill in everything else with the gray- but keep the highlights pure white. Leave a little highlight between the pumpkins to help show they are separated.

A shadow on the table and the wall behind the pumpkin will make it look like it belongs somewhere.

I hope you create a masterpiece!

Illustration 1. is some poles beside a road. The poles in the foreground are larger; their tops and bottoms go higher and lower than the ones behind. Each pole in the row is shorter than the one before, its base is higher on the page, and its top is lower on the page. As they approach the vanishing point, they become closer together. The last is the smallest. In the real world, the poles are the same size, but in the plain of the picture, they look smaller as they recede.

Illustration 2. is some steps leading up. The step in the foreground is bigger by being wider and taller than the ones behind it in the distance). The next step is more narrow on the sides and lower on the top, just slightly. Each step becomes more narrow and shorter than the one before (below).

Illustration 3. is some hills. The hill in the foreground dominates the lower third of the example because it is closer. The hills behind it are not so big; this impression is created by the hill be drawn narrower than the one before it, the hill behind is even more narrow, and the last hill is almost on top of the one in front of it. Each hill has less space between it and the ones before as they recede toward the horizon.
