If you want to put some action in your drawings of superheroes here is a method that is easy and will help.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

I suggest you start with a light pencil that you can erase easily and cleanly. You can switch to a darker one or markers later.

Begin with a jointed stick figure. We can all draw stick figures but go the next step and put dots for the elbows, knees, shoulders, hips, ankles, and then draw lines for the bones. It will look like a skeleton. Use this method to figure out the pose of the hero.

In my illustration I have him jumping with both feet off the ground, one leg is forward with the knee straight up and the leg is foreshortened; the other leg has the knee straight down and the lower part of the leg is behind the first. The shoulders are tilted, the hands are grasping a weapon, one hand is palm up and one hand is palm down.

Place the weapon before you get too far along but don't get caught up in detail just yet.

Once you are happy with the pose and the sense of action start to fill the figure out by adding the shape and the thickness of the muscle. Add clothes and armor last or drawing the figure will get lost inside of it and things just won't look right.

Keep the face simple. In my illustration the face is turned to the profile so it is seen from the side. The eyes are half way down and the nose is halfway from the eyes to the chin and the mouth is halfway from the nose to the chin. Our hero's hair is blowing back since he is in motion. If you have problems with the face you can add a beard or some helmet.

Erase the extra lines. You can go over it in sharpie and then color it in like I did, in my example I used water colors.

Give him some enemies to jump over and fight, or have him jumping over a bridge that is collapsing, or a volcano.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Begin with a basic outline. The base of the well is a cylinder. The curve of the front top should go down and match the curve of the bottom. The curve at the top back should go up. The roof starts with parallel lines; two for the post on either side of the well, two for the top and bottom of the roof, and two at an angle for the edge.

I draw guidelines that form a grid on the roof for the shingles. Draw this lightly since you may need to erase extra marks. Make some shingles wider than others but keep them pretty much the same length. Don't draw everyone; on some, just give a slight suggestion that the shingle is there, making it look old and weathered.

The side posts are three lines going up and down. There is a cross piece for the bucket to hang from, making two lines for this. Remember to draw the rope in the middle. The bottom of the cross piece is darker than the top because of the shadow.

I also use a grid for the stones on the side of the well. Keep this light so you can erase it later. Don't make the stones all the same shape. Give them some different shapes. Draw the stones by outlining them and leaving a gap between each one for the mortar.

The bucket is a cylinder with a few details, like some lines curving across for the metal bands and some lines going up and down for the wood. Draw the crank like a letter "Z."

Add shadows under the stones and the bottom edges of the shingles and inside the roof.

You can put trees in the background and bushes in front of the trees. You can add flowers and a stone path leading to the well.

INTRODUCTION
Learning to draw takes time, patience, and practice. If the hummingbird does not turn out the way you hoped, do not get discouraged because you learned some skills, and your next picture will be better. The more you draw, the better you get, so look over my worksheets and print out a few, do one or two every day for a while, and you will be surprised at how good your art will become.

OVERVIEW
Hummingbirds are beautiful, amazing, and very easy to draw. You only need to know a few basic shapes and take your time to make a beautiful picture.

BEGINNING
Start with a 2b pencil and draw lightly so you can erase later. Use a circle for the head and an oval for the body. The oval should be no more than twice the size of the circle you drew for the head. The first wing, the one away from you on the other side, is just a triangle; don't make it too big, no more the size of the oval. The tail is a small triangle.

DETAILS
The beak is two lines, don't make it too fat at first; do it skinny, and you can fatten it up later if it needs.

The rear wing is a line like a fancy number "7" with a foot on the bottom; it should look like an incomplete triangle. Draw eight wing feathers on each wing, starting at the top and working your way down. Try to draw the feathers in one beautiful stroke going out, then down and back.

Erase any extra lines.

Draw a curved line for the eyebrow and then draw the eye underneath it like a half-circle with the top of the eye covered just a little by the eyebrow. Draw the shiny spot in the eye before you color it in, so it doesn't get colored out.

The feet are tucked in, and you only see three toes, use short straight lines to draw them.

Some hummingbirds have brilliant colors. Most are green with white bellies and chins and black wings. Some have red throats or blue.

Using a simple "Jointed" stick-figure frame makes drawing this picture and others like it easy.

Start with a framework of dots for joints and lines for bones. It is like a stick figure skeleton. Keep it simple, just get the basic position and correct proportions.

Remember one figure is above looking down and the other is underneath looking up.

Add lines drawn around the stick figure to give it more body shape. Keep it simple.

Erase the stick figure frame and finish both bodies' shape.

Add shadow to give both bodies form.

A WORD ABOUT PRINTING
If you have problems printing this, CLICK HERE to visit my how-to-print page for suggestions. You could drag the image to your desktop and print from there. Or try the link below to an updated image file (PDF) that may work better on some printers. You have to copy and paste the image to a Word Doc on some printers and then print the Word Doc.

Candles can add something to a picture and are full of meaning. The trick is to get everything. Even if you have something on one side, you have something that matches the other, especially if you have a fancy candlestick.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Begin with a line going up and down to be a "center" guideline that you will use as a reference, but you will erase later. It is OK to use a ruler to get the lines straight.

On each side of the guideline, put marks to indicate the places where the candle and candlestick have shape. Don't draw the shapes just yet; right now, you want to mark the places- like making a plan. The marks must be the SAME DISTANCE on each side of the center guideline. If the mark for a curve on the candlestick is an inch on the right side, there should be a mark that is one inch on the left side.

Use circles to make the curves of the fancy candlestick; make sure the circles are the same sizes where they mirror each other. Part of the circles will get erased later, so draw lightly.

Connect the marks with up and down lines.

The bottom of the candlestick has a curve going down and out like an upside-down rainbow but slighter.

The candle has drips at the top; they look like teardrops.

The flame is two curving lines that touch at the top, the flame looks like a teardrop, but one that is bent like an "S." And the wick looks like a question mark.

Add decoration to the candlestick using dots, circles, or diamond shapes.

Erase the extra lines.

Add shadows.

Worksheet for How to Draw a Dragon Lesson

PROJECT NOTES

I start by making an outline using basic shapes. I suggest you draw lightly so that you can erase the extra lines when you are done.

Draw three circles; make one big for the head and two smaller circles, one for the nose and one for the chin, out a little away from the first large circle, this will form the snout part of the face. Connect the circles with four lines; two lines from the nose to the large circle and two lines from the chin to the large circle.

The mane is made by drawing three letter "Cs" at the inside back of the large circle: add two lines for the top and the bottom of the mane. The letter "C" marks should touch the back of the large circle.

Give the lip and the mouth a curve.

The eye is a circle with a curved line above it and touching the top of the circle. Draw a line crossways underneath, curve it just a little, draw a line up and down in the eye make it like a letter "V" but curved a little.

Make the neck with two lines curving lines they should be wider at the bottom.

Two curved lines make the horn, and a curved line finishes the jaw.

Draw ridges along the back, shape these by drawing double letter "C" connected so they have curves.

Draw the teeth like long skinny triangles.

Erase any extra lines.

Add scales and shadows.

I did the illustration with sharpie pens and colored it with pencil.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

BEGINNING STEPS
The first lines make the basic shape. Start with a curve for the front of the wing. Halfway across, draw a line down to mark where the body goes.  Draw two lines going down and out like an upside-down "V" these start just below where the neck would be.

WINGS
The back of the wing is six short curving lines connected together. Start from the outside edge of the wing and draw a little of each one. Go back and forth between the wing to be sure to keep everything matching.

DETAILS OF WINGS
Draw the wing patterns evenly by copying back and forth on each side as you go; if you try to do all one side, then the other wing won't match.  The top wing has a line going out away from the body to the tip and then three lines going down from it. The bottom wing has a teardrop-shaped line next to the big dividing line (that dividing line is a wide line). There are three teardrop-shaped lines coming off, the first going downward.

There are two rows of dots at the back edge. You might try to draw a row of figure "8"s to get them even. On the tip of the wing are four rows of dots; the second row has three big dots.

Color the outline black. Try a sharpie. Color the wings orange and red. The dots say white except for the three big dots at the edge.  Color the background blue or green.

To print just highlight and send it to your printer or save to our device to print later. Some programs work better if you drag the image to the desktop and print from there. If you have problems see the how to print tab above for some suggestions.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

Start your drawing with a 2b pencil and draw lightly. You can go over it with a darker pencil or marker after you have the basic design worked out.

The face starts out as an oval. Divide it in half going up and down with a line. Keep everything on both sides the same distance from the line so that his face stays balanced
.
The eyes are in the middle on the line drawn across the face; this line should help keep one eye from being too high or lower than the other. Start them as circles and then draw the eyelids over them. The bottom eyelid goes down so he looks old and tired.  He has pale eyes so don't color them in.

The eyebrows are white and bushy; don't do too much just some shadow on the lower part of the eyebrow and a few hairs sweeping upward.

The nose is little more than halfway to the chin, it is big. (People's noses still grow as they age.)  It is like three circles; a big circle with two smaller circles on each side. Shadow the bottom. It should go down over the mustache a little.

The ears are big. They are as high as the eyebrows on top and as low as the bottom of the nose.

The hair and beard are thin and white. Draw a few long lines going down, try to keep from getting carried away, since we want him to have white hair.
.
He has white hair with some gray streaks .If you make the background dark that will make the hair look whiter.

His mouth is partly hidden by the mustache, only the bottom lip shows; it is a wavy thin line, with a shadow underneath.

Add a lot of wrinkles in the face especially around the eyes.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

Draw the basic shape of the head as an oval. Don't draw the hood yet, save that for later. Draw two guidelines; one vertical and one across the face dividing it in half each way. Draw the eyes on the halfway mark going across keeping the eyes evenly spaced from the vertical guideline. His eyes are curved on top and flat on the bottom. Put the shiny spot in the eye before you shade it in or color it.

The nose is halfway down from the eyes. The nose is shaped like the letter "u" with two curved marks on each side.  Shadow only one side of the nose.

The mouth is halfway down from the nose.  The lower lip is like two ovals together. The top is covered with the mustache. Shade the bottom of the lower lip.

The tops of the ears are as high as the eyes and the bottom is as low as the bottom of the nose. The ears are in the shadow of the hood, so don't worry too much about them.

The neck starts down at the ears, keep most of it in shadow.

Take your time with the eyebrows and the beard. The hair in the eyebrows go in three different directions, it starts up at the by the nose then tilt over some halfway across and the last part points toward the ear. When you do the beard keep the jaw looking hard and square.

Draw the hood last.

Put in a lot of shadows in the face. keep the beard and the eyes dark.
I could have done more with the hood it is supposed to be heavy black canvas material and has heavy thick folds in it.
