This is not a hard project as one would think; once you recognize the basic and simple shapes you just put them together and add details.

Start with a large "U" shape, with a small circle beneath. Draw this lightly so you can erase as needed later on. Outline the stem by drawing two lines one for each side of the stem.

Lightly draw the outline of the three leaves, they almost make a cross. The leaves are shaped like teardrops. For interest put one of the leaves behind the rose or the stem.

Going back to the rose petal, use three curved lines to make the petals, one going down from the left top, one starting halfway up from the first and the third going up to the top right. Draw three short wiggly lines on the top, together they will cross the top. There are four leaves under the blossom, they are like triangles going out and away with a little curve.  Now you may need to erase a few of the lines you did before.

The three leaves have veins going down the middle and veins going out to the sides from the one in the middle- don't make too many. The edge of the leaves have points all the way around draw about seven or eight on each side.

Use soft grey shadow and just a little dark grey shadow on the shady edge to make the rose look round.

How To Draw Stone Stairs, Lesson and Worksheet

This is a free printable drawing worksheet, How To Draw The Stone Stairs.

It is a good project that may be part of a fantasy or historical art piece. The stars could be in a dungeon or a castle, climbed by a hero, or descending by a monster.

Our project starts with an arch big enough for all the details inside.  Mark the vanishing point at eye level; all the vertical lines will tilt toward it.

The steps are bigger at the bottom; they get narrower and shorter as they progress up. The right side of the steps is drawn against the right wall, and the left side is hidden by the hidden arch since we are not looking directly into the stairwell but at an angle. The top of the stair wraps around, so we change direction and draw the left side of the steps, with the right side being hidden behind the right turn of the wall. These sides are drawn with lines going up then back along the guideline to the vanishing point. The front of the steps are tall, but the tops of the steps are narrow due to perspective. Divide the front of the steps into different stones,

Lightly mark a pattern on the wall by lines going toward the vanishing point, then draw some lines vertical and arching at the top; this makes a checker grid that you can use to develop the stones or the bricks of the walls. Draw around the grid to make individual stones make some to have different shapes.

The stars are dark and shadowy, so look for areas to give shadow, like the distant parts and the parts where walls come together or the bottom of the steps. Keep the top of the steps as white as you can.

How to Draw Stone Stairs.

Take your time and add detail to the stones with smudges and chips, Leave the spaces between the stones white for the mortar.

There will be more detail in the foreground, the front steps, and near walls than in the background.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES.

Pumpkins are round but not a circle. Draw the outline as a lopsided circle with the bottom mostly flat. Draw a second pumpkin outline in front of the other. These outlines can be a little lumpy shaped but don't overdo it.

The stem is not at the very top but a little lower, this gives perspective to the pumpkin. The stem is rough so draw it with little short choppy lines. Add shading to the shadow side with short choppy marks made with the "cheek" or side of the pencil. Do not shade in the top cut off part, it remains white. The bottom of the stem has little bumps like toes, sketch them in like circles with a shadow on one side.

The pumpkin has creases or folds in the sides. These creases are shaped like a bow without the string or arrow,  they start at the top then bend outward and then back into the bottom where they might touch. These creases often are a shadow but will have a highlight on the outside edge next to the shadow.

Remember to leave the highlights where the light is shining on the side of the pumpkin. Lightly outline the highlights before shading the shadow side of the pumpkin.

The shadows make it look round and real. Shadows come in very dark, dark, and gray. Do the very dark first at the bottom and the side away from the light. Then add the dark around the very dark and last lightly fill in everything else with the gray- but keep the highlights pure white. Leave a little highlight between the pumpkins to help show they are separated.

A shadow on the table and the wall behind the pumpkin will make it look like it belongs somewhere.

Illustration 1. is some poles beside a road. The poles in the foreground are larger; their tops and bottoms go higher and lower than the ones behind. Each pole in the row is shorter than the one before, its base is higher on the page, and its top is lower on the page. As they approach the vanishing point, they become closer together. The last is the smallest. In the real world, the poles are the same size, but in the plain of the picture, they look smaller as they recede.

Illustration 2. is some steps leading up. The step in the foreground is bigger by being wider and taller than the ones behind it in the distance). The next step is more narrow on the sides and lower on the top, just slightly. Each step becomes more narrow and shorter than the one before (below).

Illustration 3. is some hills. The hill in the foreground dominates the lower third of the example because it is closer. The hills behind it are not so big; this impression is created by the hill be drawn narrower than the one before it, the hill behind is even more narrow, and the last hill is almost on top of the one in front of it. Each hill has less space between it and the ones before as they recede toward the horizon.

It is a good idea to draw a line down the middle to help keep things even.
The eyes are as far apart from each other as they are wide.
The outside of the nose is as wide as the eyes are far apart.
The outside of the upper lip lines up with the center of the eyes.
The eyebrows are wider than the eye.

Practice this pattern on a drawing without drawing the head, draw a tree with a face or a mirror or a door.

Very few rules apply since a scarecrow man is made out of rags and straw, so if an arm or leg is too long, that is OK because after a few days in the weather, it gets roughed up.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Quickly scribble out a basic design. It starts like a stick figure with wide shoulders, then dress the stick figure in coveralls and shirt. The hands are a little lower than halfway down. Have some straw sticking out of the cuffs of the shirt and the bottom of the pants.

The head is just a circle with a happy face drawn on it. Sketch a handkerchief around the neck; it is like two triangles, a circle for the knot, and a scribble for the ends.

The hands are just gloves stuffed with straw so they do not have the correct shape. You can scribble them out and then color them in dark.

The shoes look like peanuts with laces. Just draw the peanut shapes then make sure the bottom is flat. Draw some "Xs" for the crisscross laces.

The hat is maybe the hardest part. Draw a rectangle for the top then draw two curving lines for the brim; one curving line goes across the front and dips down on the outside edges, the second is in two parts, one on each side of the head halfway down, this is for the back brim of the hat and will curve up to touch the tips of the front line that curves down.

The pole is two dark lines going from the ground up to his back.

Draw his world by scribbling across the ground with light and then dark pencils. Draw the field as long lines going up and down but topped with short choppy lines for the tops of the grain. Draw the farm and hills very simply so the attention is on the scarecrow man.

Simply stated as the parallel lines of the side of the road recede into the distance they "appear" to draw closer together, and if they continued on into infinity or the horizon they "appear" to touch.

The point where the two sides of the road appear to touch is called the vanishing point.

In my illustration the vanishing point is set on the horizon at the foot of some hills. The two lines of the sides of the road are widely spaced at the bottom of the illustration but as they move toward the hills the lines come closer together until they touch.

The second illustration shows a curved "S" shaped road but the same principle applies. The road is wider at the base and the two sides of the road "appears" to draw closer together until they touch.

It is this appearance that we call perspective.

You could perceive the same effect if you were looking up a tall building or down a railroad track.

How To Draw A Goldfish, Lesson and Worksheet

This is a free drawing worksheet for how to draw a goldfish.

It is an easy drawing lesson for a young artist and makes drawing a goldfish simple. The artist can begin with this example and add their own style or details to suit their purpose. There are no straight lines in this drawing so if you can't draw a straight line you should do fine!

This worksheet and project notes below may be printed by parents and teachers for personal and classroom use. It can be given out as an extra credit assignment in class or as a take-home project.

PROJECT NOTES BELOW MAY BE PRINTED

BODY
Start with a basic shape by drawing two curved lines, one going up and over for the back and one going down and over for the "tummy;" the lines will connect at the nose and tail. Draw the tail first as a large triangle.

DORSAL FIN
Draw the top, dorsal, fin (fin #1)  with two lines going up and curving back, the long one starts halfway across the back, the other line is shorter and almost at the tail. A third line curves down from the long first line to the shorter second line

TAIL
The back of the tail curves inward, draw two lines for the curve. (These lines for the tail and fins do not have to be perfect because if the fish is swimming the fins are moving and might be turned or twisted.)

FINS
 Fin #2 is a front fin where the neck would be and a little higher than the bottom "tummy" line. It is just two lines curving toward a blunt point.  Fin #3 it is a little larger and is also just two lines curving to a blunt point.  Fin #4 is at the back of the bottom; it is three lines, a long one starting a little behind the halfway point curving backwards, the second line is short and about 2/3 of the way toward the tail from the first line, the third line is almost straight and connects the two. The fins have hair-thin bones in them, draw these carefully, start at the body line and sweep outward lifting your pencil or marker as you go so they get thinner at the end.

EYE, MOUTH GILLS
The eye is a black circle with a white ring around it and a thin black ring around the white ring. If you are drawing in marker or pencil outline the white ring lightly with a black circle but don't make it too dark. The mouth is a short downward line. The gills are just two or three curved line in front of the fin about where the neck would be.

I did not choose to draw the scales, if you draw scales don't make them too small or too big, take your time to make them even by drawing a light "grid" or some light guidelines to keep the pattern from getting crooked then erase the grid or guidelines when you are done.

If you look at a cylinder from the center side view it will look like a rectangle.

If you look at a cylinder from straight above it will look like a circle.

If you look at a cylinder at an angle you see both the top and the side at the same time; now the top appears as an oval and the side is no longer a rectangle.

To draw the cylinder start with a rectangle, add an oval across the top, make sure it is level on both sides.

Make a curve on the bottom this curve needs to have just the same amount of curve as the one on the top.

The oval of the top needs to be just as high on one side as it is on the other side.

Use shading to make it look round and three dimensional.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Everybody's eyes are different so don't get discouraged if the ones you draw are not perfect because somewhere there is someone with eyes like the ones you drew.

BEGINNING
This simple eye starts with three lines. The first one for the upper eyelid is like a rainbow arch. The second line is a circle with a little bit going above the arch. The third line is a wavy one for the lower eyelid.

Place your shiny reflective spot early so you won't work over it.

The eyebrow is wider than the eye, just make a few marks to place it in the drawing but come back and finish it later since it is easy.

DETAILS
Draw a circle for the pupal, it almost touches the eyelid with its top edge. The circle of the pupal and the circle of the iris should look like a doughnut.

The skin of the eyelids are thick. Draw a second line to show the thickness.

The iris has a dark edge, so go over the outside of the iris a little but not too much. There are flecks of color in the iris they are like lines going from the outside edge to the pupal.

There is a fold of skin above the eye, it is drawn as a shadow with a soft line.

The eyelashes start on the outer edge of the eyelids. The top eyelashes are much longer than the lower ones. There are more eyelashes on the side away from the nose and fewer near the nose.

The eyebrow curves over the eye. The hair of the eyebrow goes in different directions; near the nose, it goes straight up but in the center, it is at an angle toward the ear and at the end, by the ear, it is laying down pointing away.

There is a shadow on the eye caused by the eyelashes and the thick eyelid, it is a thin shadow so don't overdo it.
