This tiger is posed as if he was carefully stalking its prey. The head is low, the eyes are focused, and a foot is up in mid-stride. He is frozen, waiting the moment to charge.

BASIC BODY SHAPE:
To compose the basic shape of the tiger, this project uses a combination of techniques. Start by using circle shapes to start the body.

The face is made of two circles, one large and a small one near the bottom of the first large circle for the muzzle. The face is low on the shoulders since his head is down. Big circles make the shoulders and the hips. Two lines that slightly curve down make the back and tummy.

POSE THE LEGS:
The legs can be posed in many different ways. We changed the technique for the legs and use the "Articulated stick figure" method. Draw straight lines for the bones of the leg and circles to mark the joints. Once you are happy with the length and the position of the legs then add flesh to the legs. Save the stripes for last.

THE FACE:
The details of the face are simple; just use a few lines that curve.

1. The longest line starts at the corner of the top of the eye; it curves down and becomes the ridge of the nose, it goes to the bottom of the large circle and curves back up; it looks like a large backward letter "S."    
2. The mouth is like two parentheses, ( ), .out of order  ) ( but touching each other in the middle. The top of the parenthesis makes the bottom of the nose, and then they curve a little farther than normal to make the sides of the upper mouth. 
3. The bottom of the mouth is like the letter "u." 
4. The tiger's ears are rounded; they are on the top sides of the head. 
5. The eyes are almond-shaped that point up and outward just slightly. Inside the almond shape is a circle, but the circle is bigger than the almond shape, so part of the circle on top is missing. The pupil is not round like a human but diamond-shaped.
6. This tiger has three stripes on each side of the face that curve, three above each eye going across, one straight up and down in the center of the forehead and two stripes between the ears.

THE STRIPES:
Don't overdo the stripes. Every tiger has different stripes. The stripes curve like they are going around his body, not just straight up and down. The stripes are thickest at the back and narrow down to the tummy (but some tigers have wide stripes on the side and a few thin ones on top). The stripes on the legs angle down from the back to the front so the back of the strip is higher on the leg. The stomach is white.


There are many different types of tigers around the world. If your tiger doesn't turn out the way you want don't get upset it might have been one of the others you drew by accident.

Start with a circle for the hips and a smaller circle for the head. Connect the two circles with a triangle, this will make the shoulder and the body. The head circle has a triangle pointing straight down.

The front legs are just two parallel lines that lean forward slightly. The back legs are like a triangle pointing down with a square for the ankle at the bottom.

The face is a triangle. The eye and ear are in a straight line with the nose. The eye is where the line and the circle touch. The eye is black and shiny. The nose is a little square. There is a short stripe down the face.

The stripe on the back goes in a "V."

The tail is furry and almost as long as the body.

Start with a triangle that is wide at the bottom and not very tall. Draw lightly since you will want to erase the extra lines later on. Inside the triangle draw the horizontal lines for the lower flank, the base top, and the turret top. The line of the lower flank makes a wide space for the treads and trucks of the tank. The line of the base top curves down to connect to the lower flank. A second line departs from the base top curving up to shape the turret top. The back of the turret top is vertical. There is a dome at the top of the turret and a machine gun.

The cannon is two lines that go a little beyond the front of the tank, but not too much. The cannon has a sleeve and a buffer where it connects to the turret.  They are drawn as a cylindrical sleeve coming out of a rounded-edged box, at the front of the turret.

The treads ran on three pair of rollers. These were suspended on trucks that were like three narrow triangles pointing down and three wide triangles pointing out. The wheels are mounted behind them so part of the wheels are hidden.  There is an arm with a roller at the top of the trucks for the treads to roll across. There is a spiky large wheel at the front and a smooth roller at the back.

The treads had spikes pointing inward.

How to Draw an Eagle Flying, Worksheet by MrAdron

Begin with a light pencil that you can erase easily. The first two lines will be erased later but will be a guide to start the drawing with.

First, draw a crooked "t," but the cross-bar is twice as long as the body. Imagine the letter "t" is doing a one-handed push up that is what it will look like at first. The long line is for the wings and the short line is for the body.

On the line for the body draw an oval for the body of the eagle, this oval starts at the point where the two lines cross and will go halfway to the bottom of the line.

Draw a large triangle for the tail feathers below the oval on the line. Use the line to keep the triangle and the oval centered on the eagle and on the line.

Draw a circle for the head and two lines to connect the head to the line for the wing.

Draw a sweeping curved line from the bottom of the body, where the tail starts to the tip of the outside edge of the wing to finish the wing shape.

None of these lines need to be perfect, just go over them until you have a nice outline of the eagle.

Add the beak and the eyes.

The feathers take time and if you take your time it will look great. There are about 24 feathers on each wing. Before you draw them make marks where you want them to be. Keep them spaced evenly except for the last (on the tip- farthest away from the body), five or six, these last feathers are more spread out.

There are rows of feathers. If you overdo it the results might not look good.

Add details to the head. The eye has a black center. The beak is a triangle but bent downward at the end.

The feet start at the bottom edge of the wing the tail. The claws look like ugly bony hands.

Color the body dark brown, leave the head white, color the beak and claws yellow.

How to Draw a Serpentine Dragon Worksheet by MrAdron

This dragon is composed of a few lines that flow gracefully so it will encourage the artist to develop beautiful lines.

Start with the serpent body. The snake is just two lines a top and a bottom that touch at both ends. To draw the twisting body takes a little practice, so start with a light pencil like a hb or 2b. You may even want to do a few rough sketches on scratch paper first. Draw the body like a letter "S" . You can add a loop by drawing the top and bottom lines in a circle, draw it right over themselves lightly, and when you are happy about the look then erase out the lines that are in the way.

The head is rounded and the tail can be a point, spade, spike or whatever you want.

Think of the wings as the number 7 lying down on its left-hand side with a curtain of skin stretched between finger joints. Draw the front one that is closest to you first. It is a good idea to practice on a scratch paper until you get it right. The wing is flapping in the wind so it has waves and the lines that make it curve gracefully. This is one of the things that make our dragon so beautiful.

After you have the front wing the way you like it then draw the back wing, it does not need to be all showing since it is behind the front one.

Add details like spikes claws, scales, fangs, and eyes.

You can color the dragon any way you want.

It is easy to draw the basic design but there is no end of variations a creative mind can give it.

I only show one here but I have a list of ideas at the bottom.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES.

Begin by drawing lightly so you can erase extra marks later. Start with the basic oval shape but a little pointed at both ends. I suggest a guideline across the center to keep things even, and another guideline at the end to keep things level to each other.

I draw a rectangle where I want the large rear fins to go. This helps to make sure one doesn't stick out farther or one starts too far forward since I use the rectangle to be a guideline.

There are many ways to make the fins they can be straight lines or curves or circles. I chose the rocket fin design for my example. The fin in the center is drawn right on the center guideline.

I use another guideline to keep the two rear motors even with each other. The motors are circles with a square then some shading and a few marks for vents. The propellers are very thin figure "8s."

Underneath the blimp is a gondola, it is like a passenger area. It is an oval. I started by drawing a square and then making the lines curve up and down to give the round shape.

Once you have the basic ideas in place erase your extra lines.

You can add things like:
     * Antenna.
     * Windows
     * A ladder or anchor or swing hanging below.
     * A bird's nest on the top,
     * A telescope sticking out,
     * More doors and windows.
     * A flag can hang behind it.
     * Birds can be landing on it.
     * Parachutes underneath,
     * Weather vanes on top.
     * Solar cells.
You might want to go over your drawing with a fine-tipped marker then color it in with color pencils.

Draw a world below it.
Let your imagination go wild.

INTRODUCTION
Learning to draw takes practice; basically, if you sketch something every day you will get better as an artist. If the totem pole does not turn out the way you like do not give up, it may be that you will be more successful with a landscape or a still life. I have lots of worksheets to choose from find a few that offer variety and try them. Come back every day for a few weeks and print off a few and you will be surprised at how good an artist you have become.

OVERVIEW
How to draw a totem pole worksheet is easy to use and breaks down some of the problems young artist have with a project that has multiple themes.  The Totem pole I offer is inspired by tradition but simplified for the young artist.

The hand-carved totem pole is not a perfect representation of the people and creatures shown but are icons so the young artist does not need to worry about being perfect because it is more realistic if it is not perfect.

BEGINNING
Start with the basic shape and draw this lightly since it may need to be erased later on. The basic shape is a tall rectangle. If one wants an eagle at the top draw large wing shapes on both sides a little lower than the top.

Divide the rectangle into three or four units of squares and rectangles. Remember variety is interest so have two rectangles or two squares.

The totem pole tells a story or describes a family, so think of the story or family you want to illustrate.

DESIGN DETAILS
You might want to use scratch paper to work out the designs. Draw the designs to fit inside the squares and the rectangles of the totem pole. Your designs can be an owl, bear, beaver, dog, person, walrus or anything you want it to be.

The style of art used in totem poles is a style that fills in blank spaces with lines and shapes, so if you have a space that is empty put something in it. The easiest way is to outline things with another line.

FINISHING TOUCHES
When you have worked out the design go over it in a fine-tipped marker or colored pencils. The colors used in totem poles were made from natural sources so they were limited to white, black, red, brown, a very little bit of blue.

You can make a totem pole that tells the story of your family or of a person in your family.

LESSON NOTES

BEGINNINGS
I recommend using a ruler to draw straight lines. Start with the double lines of the rails that the caboose sits on, this avoids problems later on in the drawing. Above the rails give a space for the wheels and draw a large rectangle. Above the rectangle draw another smaller rectangle for the top house known as a cupola. The roof is a long thin rectangle. Check to make sure all your lines are parallel.

WINDOWS
Draw lightly so you can erase later. Draw guidelines for the windows, draw them straight across for the top edge and bottom edge of the window frames, this way one window won't be higher than the other. There are three or four windows in the body of the caboose. There are two smaller windows in the cupola.

Draw the vertical lines that make the outside edge of the caboose remember the roof overhangs at both ends. Use vertical lines to finish the windows.

DETAILS
There are steps at both ends. Use the ruler to draw these as lines straight across. The steps go down but do not touch the tracks.

WHEELS
The wheels are not hard to do. Trace coins or buttons or some small thing to make them round. The wheels are held into iron carriages that look like a square with a triangle on each side to the middle of the wheel. Take your time and make sure the wheels touch the rails and don't go through the bottom of the caboose.

THE WOOD SIDING
The side of the caboose is made out of wood. Use your ruler to put a mark every 1/8 or 1/4 inches going all the way across the body of the caboose, I suggest doing this right under the roof. Using these marks draw lines from each mark straight down. Break some up of the lines with gaps so they are not solid, it will make the sides look more weather-worn and old.

Don't forget the chimney, it is black. There was a stove in the caboose so the railroad men could ear hot food and sleep in a warm car.

PRINTABLE PROJECT NOTES

Use the basic shape of a tall triangle for the tree shape. Draw this lightly since it is only a framework, and some of it will need to be erased later. Draw a guideline straight up and down the center of the triangle to keep things even. This guideline divides the bottom of the triangle into even halves.

Inside the outline of the tree, "stack" four or five or more triangles, one halfway over the other above it, so each is overlapping.

On the bottom edge of each triangle, draw a line that curves like a smile; it needs to touch each end of the triangle's bottom corners. This curved line is a guideline to add texture to the tree by drawing a series of half circles or the letter "U" over and over on the line to look like individual drooping tree boughs.

Erase the triangles' extra lines, leaving only the outside shape and the curved lines.

Draw the trunk; use the guideline to put it in the right place.

Decorate your tree.

PRINTABLE NOTES

Use separate sheets of paper to work out the design of the building and the people. Draw the manger like a large "X" with some lines across for the wood texture. The baby Jesus was warped in rags, so draw lines across for the wrapping.

Draw the people like stick figures with elbows and knees at first, then put clothes on them. Keep the faces simple. You can use hair to cover mistakes and if the face on Joseph is a problem, put a beard on him. Keep the baby Jesus simple, just a circle for the head lying down and a slightly curved line for the closed eyes.

The stable is like a large letter "A" with walls.
In the middle is an imaginary reference called the vanishing point. All the lines that go from front to back recede to the vanishing point; this gives the stable perspective. The center is a good place to put the baby Jesus. You can use windows and stones in the walls for interest. The floor can have lines for straw. There will be shadows in the corners of the stable.

Once you have worked out your ideas, put them together on your final project. You might consider tracing the studies you used to work out the design onto the final project.

In my example, I used watercolor to go over the fine-tipped marker. I used violet and purple for the night sky and purple for the desert mountains in the background. To color the wood, I used different browns. On the stone, I used a little light wash of gray, but very watery, so it is mostly white. The dress on Mary is blue, and the Cloak that Joseph is wearing is brown.
