BEGINNINGS
I always start an outdoor picture with an idea of where the horizon (where the sky meets the earth) is. I never recommend that the horizon to be in the middle of the picture because that is boring, but here I sort of did make it that way, it only works because it is very jagged like the trees and the forest in the background.

TRUNK
The trunks of willow trees are twisted and not straight, so start the willow with a wiggly trunk and put in some angled lines for the twisted look.

BRANCHES
In my drawing, I wanted to show some branches, so I did the branches before I did the long hanging leaves. The willow tree has branches that just go out away from the trunk so draw them outward and then up.

OUTLINE SHAPE
Lightly draw some circles to be an outline for the shape of the tree's top. Make it interesting and not just an umbrella or mushroom shape.

HANGING LEAVES
The hanging leaves all come to a stop at a straight line at the bottom so draw a line to keep you from drawing the leaves too low. The hanging leaves on the back side of the tree are more of shading than drawing. Shade downward and fill in the areas behind the branches so they stand out. Then draw the leaves in the front of the branches sketching down and outward. Use a pattern like an upside-down "Y."

DARKER AREAS
You might need to change to a lighter and harder pencil for the leaves on the sunny side of the tree and use darker softer pencils for the leaves on the shady side of the tree. If you have overdrawn the leaves and made the tree too dark use and eraser to lift out some lighter areas. Make the grass in clumps under the tree.

BACKGROUND
Willows grow near water so I put a creek next to mine but you might want yours to be by a lake or waterfall.

Draw the background lightly since it is far away, add some interest to the background with a dark row of bushes and a lighter row of trees.

How To Draw An Elephant. Easy Worksheet

This free drawing worksheet, How To Draw An Elephant, is an easy drawing lesson. It only takes a few basic shapes and a little practice to draw a beautiful elephant.

How to draw an elephant worksheet.
Start with the large rectangle of the body. Add to that a circle for the head. (We come back to the head later).
The legs are rectangles going in different directions downward. The knees are low and so bend the rectangle for the bottom of the leg low.

The ear is a large triangle kind of sideways.

After you have a good outline start to round it out. Round up slightly at the shoulder. Round up slightly at the hip and the back of the hip where the tail is.  Round down the belly. Round out the bend in the legs. round off the ear.

The toes look like the letter "m."

The ear has rough edges.

The eye is small and is low on the head and toward the back.

Save the fun stuff for last so when you have the body looking good draw the tusk and the trunk.

Elephants have very wrinkly skin. Draw wrinkles across the trunk and legs, with some twisty wrinkles at the knees but keep them light, they are only a detail not a focus.

Shadow the legs on the other side, and shadow around the ear and belly.

How to Draw a Pirate Ship. Easy Worksheet

This is a how-to-draw pirate ship worksheet for the beginner artist.

This is an easy ship to draw and perfect for the young or beginner artist. Since pirates used whatever ship they could get their hands on there really was not a special kind of pirate ship that they all had to look like. So, don't get upset if yours don't look just like you want it to there might have been one just like the one you made.

A WORD ABOUT PRINTING
This free printable drawing worksheet may be downloaded to your device and printed easily. if you have any trouble then CLICK HERE to visit my how-to-print page for some suggestions. Remember to use the greyscale setting so you get the shadows in the illustration.

BEGINNINGS
Draw the horizon first. The horizon is where the sky meets the ocean. I draw it first so the horizon is level all the way across the picture. If you goof it up just draw an island in the background but wait for the end for any changes like that.

The outline of the little pirate ship starts out to look like a shoe. The front is a curved line, then draw a second parallel line/ there are two since this is a big piece of wood on the old ships. The back of the ship is a line going mostly up and down but tilted back a little at the top. The bottom and top of the boat is a straight horizontal.

DETAILS
The masts are about as high as the body is long. My example has only two but you can have one or four if you like. I thought it looked better to keep it simple. The mast tilt back slightly. Draw them lightly so if you have to erase over some of them to draw the sails it will be easy. Don't forget the mast that sticks out at the front.

SAILS
The sails are basic shapes of square and triangles but slightly curved, they do not need to be perfect since in real life sails flap around in the wind.

EXTRAS
If you are happy with the basic design then go over it and erase any extra lines that needs to be cleaned up.
Add details like cannon holes, ropes, rudder, anchor, port holes, box like places where stuff would be kept, and maybe a pirate or two.
The waves far away, near the horizon line, are smaller and the waves in the foreground toward the bottom are larger.

FINISHING
Go over your drawing in a darker pencil or color pencils or markers.
If you take your time it will look good.

How to Draw an Eagle Face Lesson and Worksheet

I am delighted to share my free printable drawing worksheet for How To Draw An Eagle Face.

Here is a lesson for the young artist and a worksheet.

Print the worksheet, highlight it, send it to your printer, or save it to your device to print later. If you have problems printing, visit the HOW TO PRINT tab above for suggestions.

Eagles are beautiful and awesome creatures. You might feel the first effort to draw one is not successful. I recommend you make a few practice sketches; this is what professional artists do all the time. After you have worked out some of the hard parts, then try to do a serious project.

How to draw an eagle looking at you. Worksheet.

I am glad to create these worksheets for you, and I hope you enjoy them. You are welcome to print as many of my How-to-draw worksheets as you need.

The basic head shape is a circle.

Draw the top of the beak as a line. It starts a little above halfway; draw it out and down.
The bottom of the beak is not a straight line but jagged.

The eye is a circle cut off at the top by the eyebrow.
The eyebrow tilts down at both ends.

After you get the basic shape, modify the back of the head by extending the line out and down.
Draw a circle for the shoulder under the beak.

The eye has a black center, and a shiny spot in the middle makes it a square, and be careful not to color over it.

The feathers on the body are slightly rounded at the tip.
The feathers on the shoulder are shorter and more rounded.

Color the feathers grey and use only a little black for the details.
The beak and the eye are yellow.
Add a little blue for the shadows on the white feathers.

To make the head look really white, add a little color to the background behind it.  Sometimes you can do this by rubbing a little tissue over the pencil and smearing it around a soft grey look that makes the white look whiter.

Robins are fun and easy to draw. The differences between a robin and many others birds are so slight that if you can draw one, you can easily draw almost any bird.

Start with the basic shape. Think of the body of a robin as a teardrop shape sideways. Draw it as a circle for the chest and one on top and a little forward.

The trail starts as a long triangle that is about half as long as the body.

The line for the front of the bird is a sweeping graceful curve; draw it over the front part of the circle and down to the tail. The line for the back is almost straight.

The beak is a long triangle, the back of the beak is another triangle pointing to the bottom of the eye.

The wing starts as a smaller circle on the shoulder. Draw a line down the front of the wing circle and then back to the tail.

The tail has two feathers.

The legs start as triangles at the bottom of the bird; they are more toward the back. The legs are two straight lines; the feet are three lines forward and slightly curved downward, and one line back curved downward slightly.

When you finish the basic drawing, add the eye.
  • The robin has a black eye with white above and below it.
  • There are two or three white throat stripes.
  • The head is black.
  • The wings and tail are greys.
  • The chest is red but not a ruby red more of an orange-red combination. The red of the chest goes to the legs.
  • Behind the legs is a white area.
Take your time, and you will have a drawing you can be proud of.

Raccoons are fun to draw and it is not that hard to draw the face of one.  Start by drawing lightly since you will want to erase some of the extra lines and the guidelines later.

Start with a medium-large circle in the middle of your paper.
Draw a vertical guideline down the center so you have evenness on both sides.

Draw a guideline across the lower third this will be to place the eyes later.

Draw two smaller round circles to start the ears.

Draw a medium-sized circle for the muzzle at the bottom of the first big circle. Now you have a rough outline to build up your portrait.

Draw the eyes as two circles on the top of the horizontal guideline. Remember the shiny spots, draw little squares in the eyes, and don't color them leave them white.  There is a thick eyelid draw it as a line halfway around the bottom half of the eyes.

The nose is a teardrop shape but it has a shiny spot across the top so draw it in to remember to not color over it.

The mask is almost straight across the top but tilts down a little. Every raccoon has a mask that is a little different so if yours doesn't look perfect don't worry somewhere there is a raccoon with a mask like the one you drew.

The fur is the part that takes most of the work. So take your time. Draw the fur as many short lines where the pencil or pen goes up and out. As you draw the fur lift the pencil or pen up as your draw. The fur has a direction it goes out away from the center, so at the top, it goes up at the sides it goes out.
Take your time. Take a few breaks and stand up and stretch. When you are done you will have a drawing you will be proud of.

How to Draw A Dolphin Drawing Lesson For Young Artist.

This free printable drawing worksheet is an easy lesson that uses a few simple lines to draw a dolphin and young artist are quick to master this project.

The worksheet below may be printed by highlighting it and sending it to your printer or saving to you device to print later.

How to draw a Dolphin worksheet.

Once you master the basic shape you can have them doing all kinds of things in your pictures. Drawing the dolphin is all about graceful lines. Take your time and make the lines flow like water.

Start with a simple arch like a rainbow.  The back of the arch near the tail is bent more than the front near the nose.

Draw the line for the bottom.  It will be an arch too, but straighter for the first 2/3rd of the way.

Lightly draw a triangle for the top fin.  Make it near the center. There are different types of dolphins and some have the fin more forward and other's have the fin more back, so don't worry if it is not perfect.

Draw the triangle for the lower fin.

Draw a triangle for the back flipper; it is like a flattened triangle.

Go over your lines with a darker pencil or marker, make the lines flow.

The nose is rounded.  The mouth goes almost all the way to the eye.

The eye is a round shadow with a line through it.

If you like this project you might also like the how to draw a caboose worksheet. CLICK HERE.

Start by using basic shapes to create an outline. There were many different locomotives. Some had 2 or 4 or 6 wheels or even more. Some had big smokestacks and some had smaller ones. There were different pipes and things on them so you cant go wrong whatever you draw there probably was one like it.

Draw the lines for the train tracks before you draw the wheels that way the wheels will be setting on the tracks and not too high or low. You can trace coins or bottle lids to make perfect circles. There is a metal shaft that goes across the big wheels draw it first before you do too much detail on the wheels.

The main part of the locomotive is the tank it is a rectangle going across the engine and the cab where the engineer stands is a rectangle going up and down at the back of the first rectangle. Draw some squares in the cab for the windows.

The front has a "cow catcher" it is a triangle with some lines in it.

There is a small rectangle between the two smaller wheels that is the piston to make the drive shaft move. It is darker on the bottom.

Add shadows to make the tank look round.

Don't forget to draw the coal car. called the tender.

Make smoke darker on the bottom and lighter at the top.

Make a small gift and print a few worksheets for your personal use.

How To Draw Blossoms on a Tree. Worksheet For Young Artist.

How to draw a tree blossoms art lesson.

Drawing pictures of flowers is one of my favorite things to do. This is a simple how-to-draw blossoms on a tree worksheet that will help the young artist draw sprint blossoms. There are tips and illustrations to make it easy to draw a beautiful picture.

How to draw blossoms worksheet.

To see more projects like this, search the list in the sidebar.

I do not charge for these how-to-draw worksheets, but they take much of my time to create for you. Please consider making a small contribution to support my art.

It is not very hard to draw blossoms on a tree and if you take your time and use some colors it could be a beautiful picture.  If it is the first time you are trying a project like this then keep it simple.

There are different blossoms: some are crinkly, some fuzzy, and some geometric, like ours here.

A WORD ABOUT PRINTING

To print the worksheet, highlight it and send it to your printer. Some printers work better if you copy and paste it into a Word doc and print from there (sometimes the margins are off, but you can reset them on the Word doc toolbar). If you have problems printing,  CLICK HERE to visit the how-to-print page for some suggestions.

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

DESIGN
Start with a light pencil like a 2b and draw two or three circles for the blossoms.  Make five marks evenly spaced around the edge of the circle.   Draw a small circle in the center.

BEGINNING
Draw five circles inside the big circle these five should touch the center and touch one of the five marks. Don't make these circles perfect keep them irregular and interesting.

Add a line starting from the center and going halfway down the middle of the five irregular circles.

In the center, circle draw three or four smaller circles.

LEAVES
Draw the leaves with two sweeping lines that curve out away and then back toward each other. Place them behind the blossoms, if you shade or color the leaves it will make the blossoms look brighter. If you want to add details you can add the ridges and veins of the leaves.

BUDS
The buds are smaller circles at the end of a skinny line. Draw one or two curved lines through the buds to make individual petals.

The branch is not straight but a little zig-zag. Use short choppy lines to give it texture.

Erase the extra lines last.

You can color your picture. Use a reddish-brown for the branch and add some purple for the shadow.
Make the sky light blue and put some purple splashes in the upper half.
The leaves are yellow highlights with green and a little blue for shadow.
The blossoms are mostly white but add a touch of pink around the edges and lavender for the shadows.

BEGINNING
Start with a light pencil like a 2B and lightly draw the framework for the figure. The head is oval the shoulders are tilted upward to the waiving hand the body is slightly triangle. Use dots to mark the shoulders, elbows, and hands. Draw a circle for the hip.Use a graceful sweeping line for the fish part. The fin can be bell-shaped or like a triangle.

SECOND
After you get the rough dimensions worked out then start to outline the body around the framework. Keep the face simple since it is small. Use a lightly drawn line to mark the vertical center and three vertical marks to place the eyes, mouth, and nose.

FACE
Keep the face simple. A few lines are all it takes. The mouth is straight across on the top and “U” shaped on the bottom.A little dash makes she shadow below the lower lip. The eyes are a line and a dot. The nose is a curve from the eyebrow to the shadow underneath the nose.

DETAIL
The Scales take time. Draw light stripes to measure and keep them even, then draw the scales along the lines they get smaller toward the fin. The rock has a shadow on one side draw it darker.  Use short scratchy marks to make the rock look rough. Go up and down on the sides and then back and forth for the top.

WAVES
The waves have a shadow side too. The waves at the bottom of the picture are bigger and darker; they get smaller and lighter toward the top of the ocean. Keep the hands simple.

HAIR AND CLOTHING
Mermaids have long hair (Their scissors would rust in the ocean.) I gave the mermaid a swimsuit made out of sea shells and pearls. The seashells are like triangles, rounded on the bottom and with a little bump on the top.

After you draw it in pencil then go over it with a sharpie then erase the pencil.
