How To Draw A Clenched Fist by MrAdron.

OVERVIEW
The fist is not hard to draw, but there are just a few features you must keep in mind. The shape is not really round and not really square but a combination of both. The thumb makes it look off-balance since it is to the side of the center.

BEGINNINGS
Start with a large circle for the basic fist shape. Below the circle draw two lines for the wrist and forearm. One line is directly below the pinkie finger, the other is about a third of the way from the outside on the thumb side.

The edge of the palm beside the pinkie is not straight but is folded outward and looks like a little triangle. The base of the palm curves in a little to join the wrist and forearm.

FINGERS
Draw a curving guideline for the top knuckles of the fingers. Halfway between the knuckles and wrist draw another guideline for the fingertips. Divide the space into the four fingers by drawing five vertical lines. Round off the top and bottom of the fingers. The fingernails are hardly visible.

THUMB
The thumb can cover the first or first and second fingers. The outside edge of the thumb is three straight lines. The inside shape is three curved lines.

WRIST & ARM
The arm gets wider the further away from the hand. There are tendons in the wrist that look like long ridges use shadow technique to draw these it. It could be two or three lines.

FINISHING TOUCHES
There are wrinkles in the palm. There are three wrinkles across the wrist. There are wrinkles across the knuckles.

SHADING
Use the shading technique to give the fist roundness. The darkest area is inside of the palm by the fingertips.

Our characters are shaped like gourds or rocks or water bubbles, with eyes.

Draw two circles a large one and a smaller one above it. Outline the circles to make a gourd shape. Add feet like blobs or peanut shapes if you like, this gives the opportunity to practice basic body pose.

EYES
Our gourd people are all about eyes. Draw different eyes to express different emotions and feelings. Example...

     Surprise: Two circles side by side with black dots in the center. Eyebrows are high.
     Disgust:  The top of the eye is a low curve and a half dot under each. Eyebrows are low.
     Worry Eyes curved at the top, Dots to the side. Eyebrows to the side slightly.
     Curiosity: The eyes are wide open the dots to the side, eyebrows are high.
     Anger: Eyes tilt down leaning toward the middle, with a half dot under the eyelid.
     Embarrassment: Dot in the middle and outline at the sides.

BODY LANGUAGE
Try different gourd shapes to express emotion.

Start with a basic design. It is good to work out ideas on something that you can throw away when you are finished.

Our design is the classic rocket design with a teardrop shape.  Use a guideline down the center to help keep things even on both sides. Use guidelines to keep the front and rear of the fins even. You will erase these guidelines later.

The scout ship has four wings or fins, with a rocket and motor on each one. Use the guidelines to keep them even. The fins taper down and back. The rockets are long cylinders with a point at one end and a ball shape where the rocket fire comes out. Trace coins or buttons to get the circles right. You might want to draw one and then trace it each time for all the rest.

Add details. If you want to have windows or doors, keep them small, making the spaceship look big. Add a few flames at the bottom of the rockets. Have laser guns poking out or a landing dock.

Use shadow to make it look round.

BASIC
The face of Don Quixote is long. Start with an oval and use some guidelines. One guideline will go down the face a third away from the right edge; it is not center since we are drawing a face turned away at a three-quarter view. Draw a guideline across the face halfway down for the eyes. From the eyes go halfway for the nose and below the nose draw another for the mouth.

DEVELOP
The eyes are old and droopy. The upper eyelids incline downward at the outside. Under the eyes are curved lines and bags. There are wrinkles on the outside of the eyes.
The nose is big, and the end droops down.
The upper lip is covered by the long pointy mustache; use many lines going down to draw it- don't just outline it. Same for the pointy beard on the chin.
The lower lip is two curved lines.

ARMOR
Draw the helmet and armor last. The helmet is simple. It is just some curved lines.
The chain mail is easy if you use some guidelines evenly spaced in rows, then fill in the rows with curved lines for the chain links.
The armor is only outlined in our example.

SHADOW
Use shading to make different parts stand out. Make the chain mail darker than the face, and make the areas around the beard darker, so the beard looks brighter. Put shadow under the brim of the helmet. There is a shadow around the eyes, under the jaw, and under the nose.

FINAL TOUCHES
Put some wrinkles across the forehead and between the eyes.
Draw a wrinkle or two from the side of the nose to the outside of the mouth.
Use shading technique to add flabbiness to the neck.
Smudge the armor with a pencil or scribble little areas and add dots to show it is old and worn out.

BEGINNING OUTLINE
The hand starts as almost a square. Roughly place the staff as two long lines that go through the square, so the fingers will be wider at the front.  The wrist is narrower than the hand, and the thumb edge of the hand slopes upward. The fingers are curved around the staff, so the back knuckles from the outside edge; draw this as a curving line that will go past the staff's edge. Use a second curving line to mark off the tips of the fingers.  You will be erasing these guidelines later.

DETAILS
The thumb is higher than the first finger. The first finger curves around a little. The fingers are not straight but bent a little where the knuckles are. There are wrinkles around the wrist and the back edge of the hand. There are wrinkles across the wrist, on the palm of the hand, and across the thumb muscle. Add the fingernails, and remember there is some finger on each side of the fingernail.

Use shadow to give the hand roundness.

Draw the staff with a lot of lines for the wood grain.

There are two shadow lines down the wrist for the tendons.

LESSON  NOTES

The castle gate is a collection of geometric forms arranged on the drawing and then detailed to create the desired scene.

BEGINNING
Use basic shapes of cylinders, rectangles and half circles to organize the basic outline. The towers on each side of the gate are forward a little so the bottom will be lower in the scene than the walls. The bottom of the tower curves downward and the top curves upward.

Use guidelines to keep things even, draw the guideline for the top and bottom of the wall all the way across, even across the towers, so both sides of the wall are even, you can erase the lines later. Use three guidelines for the tops of the towers and the wall so you can draw the shapes that are at the top of the wall.

The gate entrance is an arch draw it like a half-circle over a square.

FILL IT IN
Once you have the basic design worked out then add the details. The top of the towers and walls have rectangles, draw them lightly using the guidelines and when they are even, then go over them to make it look good. The top has a series of supporting round arch shapes, draw them under the rectangles and add a little decoration like a square or circle at the bottom of each.

The towers have some windows they are rectangular and narrow. The windows have large stone tops and bottoms, draw narrow rectangles for these.

The towers have a guard's door in the bottom. It is a rectangle inside an archway, this door gives a reference so you get a sense of size.

The gate opening shows the thick wide walls on both sides. The bottom of these walls tilt up to the vanishing point, they are in shadow. There may be a door inside one side for the guard. Add shadow on the ground. Draw something inside the castle-like buildings.

STONES
The ground has a stone road. Use a grid that is wider at the bottom and narrower at the gate to give the perspective. Then draw over the grid some stones but not all the stones in the road.

The walls are stones. Use a grid to keep things even and then draw some of the stones.

The towers are round the stones wrap around so use curving guidelines to draw them.

Put something inside the castle that you can see through the gate.

The hand has many parts, so we look for ways to make it simple.

PALM
The palm is like a square, but not exactly.  If you can't draw a perfect square, you have an advantage because the palm gets wider by the fingers and just a little narrow at the wrist. The top of the palm by the fingers is curved with a curve that goes across and a little extra down at the pinky finger end.

FINGERS
Before you try the fingers, use three sweeping guidelines to mark off each knuckle and the tips of the finger. This works for the three center fingers, but the pinky finger is further down.
The first one closest to the palm is a little longer than the other two bones. Each finger except the thumb is divided into three sections by the two knuckles. The muscle between these joints curves out a little. The bottom of the back is straight lines that may bend a little outward at the knuckle joints. The joints have wrinkles.

THUMB
The thumb has only two bones and one joint. The back part of the thumb starts by the wrist and curves outward; the inside part closest to the palm can look like it is in the middle more or less since there is a lot of skin that folds or stretches.

DETAILS
There are many wrinkles and lines in the palm, but add them carefully and don't overdo them.

There are some balls of bone at the base of the fingers; use the shading technique to show them. There are highs and lows in hand by the thumb muscle, a bowl of the palm, and the base near the wrist; use shading technique to show these, but again, do not overdo it.

BEGINNING
The skull is almost round, so start with a circle. The view is turned slightly for interest so use a vertical guideline curving off-center to keep the angle right. The upper jaw is like a square below the circle.

THE EYE SOCKETS
The eye sockets are large and are about a third of the face. One eye socket is in full view; the other is partly hidden by the nose and cheekbone since it is turned away. The eye socket is not really a circle; the outer upper corner is slightly pointed. There is a ridge over the eye socket, show it by a shadow, and there is a ridge beside the eye shadow it in too.

NASAL
The nasal cavity (nose) is between the eyes and is like an upside-down "V" There is a thin bone inside sticking up.

TEETH
About eight teeth are showing. Use another guideline to keep them in a straight row. The two on the end are wide; the next one is pointed, then the rest are flat looking. The top of the teeth are rounded.

CHEEKBONE
Under the eye is the cheekbone; it goes back to the ear. Draw it as a shadow below and a shadow above.

CANDLE
The candle is a cylinder. The bottom is curved down and back up a little, the top is uneven, and there are blobs of melted wax on the side; they look like the letter "U," Don't overdraw the wax dripping down the skull, a few lines ending in a frozen drop will do. Have one drip hanging over the eye.

SHADOWS
Put dark shadow in the eye sockets and the nasal cavity. Use shadowing all around to make the skull look round. The skull is not smooth; there is texture, especially in the shadows, so use bumpy dotted marks to give it an old worn look.

FINAL TOUCHES
Make the background dark, so the skull looks white.
Have it sitting on a book; remember to keep all the lines parallel when drawing the book.

BEGINNING
Draw a basic outline of the Ankylosaurus. The body is an arch shape across the back and flat underneath. The tail is almost as long as the body. The rear legs are halfway between the tip of the nose and the tip of the tail; start with a stick figure technique to get the position right.  The head is a triangle shape.

ARMOR
Use three or four guidelines from the neck to the tail to keep the rows of armor even. Lightly draw 13 or 15 lines across to make a checker pattern. The armor on the back is bumps or spikes drawn in each piece of the grid. There are spikes on the edge; they are like triangles that are curved backward. They are smaller at the neck and bigger at the waist, and smaller at the tail. There is a club on the end of the tail

DEVELOP THE BODY
Draw the legs around the stick figure lines. Use a guideline to keep the feet level. The legs are thick. The belly sags a little.
The head has two spikes. One is behind the head going up, and one is at the bottom back of the jaw, pointing down and back.  There are two rows of bumps on the top of the head. The eye is under a thick eyebrow. The mouth has a downturn at the front like a bird beak.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Use shadows to make the far leg look like they are on the other side. Put shadows under the spikes and between the armor plates.

BEGINNING
Begin with just the boat shape. It curves across the top and comes to a point at the front; the back is straight up and down.  There is a raised deck at the front and a double step-deck at the back.

MAST
Lightly draw the mast without the sails first; this will help to place the sails correctly. The mast are thick so use two lines, one for each side. Use a ruler or straight edge to keep them straight; they were wider at the bottom. There are two major masts; one in the center and one is halfway from the center to the front. There is a smaller mast at the back and a tilted mast at the very front.

There are two cross beams on each big mast. A small cross beam is at the top, and a long one is at the center of the mast. The little mast at the front and back each has one cross beam. The back cross beam goes up and down at an angle.

SAILS
The sails would be rectangular except the blowing wind and stretching makes them taper to points at the bottom corners. The top sales are wider at the bottom and very narrow at the top. Where they connect to the cross beams, the sails dip in a series of "U" shapes.

DETAILS
There are four cannon ports low on the side.
The side has several lines going from front to back.
There is a ledge below the mast on the outside of the ship where the rigging connects.
The flags are The Dutch Cross on the front mast and the British Union Jack on the second mast.
There is a railing around the decks.
The rudder is a curved line and a vertical line going down.
The water in the foreground should be darker, and the water in the distance should be lighter.
