How to draw a lizard. A skill builder for the young artist.
If you have problems see the how to print tab above for helpful tips.

Drawing lizards are fun and easy.

Start with a double curved line to be the spine of the lizard.  The head is like a triangle. If you make it too rounded it will look like a salamander.

Draw a line across the point where the shoulders will be, and a line for the hips. Draw the sides and tail with two lines on each side of the spine. The arms and legs are crooked so draw the "V" downward for each arm and then an upside-down "V" for the legs.

Draw light circles where the knees, elbows, and different muscles.  Outline these circles to make them into legs and arms. The fingers and toes are long.

Finish the head with eyes and nostrils.

Erase the extra lines. Outline the finished lines with a marker and color the lizard green.

HOW TO DRAW CARTOON MUSHROOM PEOPLE

This is a free printable drawing worksheet, How To Draw Cartoon Mushroom People.

You can download it to your device and print it easily.

These mushroom people are fun and always get your creative juices flowing. These are easy to draw so give them a try. Since they are colorless, you can do a lot with a pencil with these.

How to Draw Cartoon Mushroom People worksheet
Start with a simple cylinder and add the half-circle cap to the top. Don't worry about making everything perfect it is just in not being perfect that makes these creatures interesting. Draw the circles for the eyes across the bottom line of the cap, and you can sketch eyebrows floating above. My mushroom people have mouths so draw a smile you can add a tooth if you like. I put a circle on each side of the base for feet, put one in front and one at back for interest.

Add whatever accessories that make sense for the person you are drawing like hats, gloves, tools, band-aids, sandals, goggles, scarves, belts, armor, helmets, pets,  Big lips, eyebrows, long tongue, purse, back-pack, weapons, mustache, freckles, or ponytails.

Take time to do a good job in coloring and shading, this is what makes the project stand out as a serious piece of art and not some kid daydream doodle.

Create your own:
Surfer Sam, The Prospector, Your Teacher, Mom, The Lion Tamer, The Explorer, The Sheriff, Farmer, Beauty Queen, Weight Lifter, Scientist, Pirate, Cop, Geek, Nerd, Joe cool, Biker, Mail Carrier, Student, Band member, Rocker, Jock, Gloria Gardener,  Holly Housewife, Chef, Cesar, Uncle Sam, Movie Star.

How about your family tree as mushroom people?  Or illustrate a famous story like Romeo and Juliet with mushroom people. Or copy a famous painting like Washington crossing The Delaware with mushroom people.

Make your family into a mushroom family and do a mushroom portrait of each member

How to Draw a Frog

This is a free printable drawing worksheet, How to Draw A Frog

You can downloaded it to your device and printed.

There are tips on how to print it at the HOW TO PRINT tab above

How to draw a frog step by step.

Frogs are fun to draw they have many different poses and moods, so you can do a lot with them.

Start by drawing a large oval for the body, a smaller oval, for the head and two circles for the eyes.  Be sure to make the eyes the same size.

Curved lines make the legs. The back feet are like long skinny triangles. There are three toes. The hands have three fingers and one thumb. Frogs have floppy hands so don’t worry if they are not perfect.

Draw the eyelids with curved lines and half-circles for the eyes. The smile is a simple curved line. Draw him on a lily pad or in a pond or a rock with water around it. Frogs can be any color. Color spots on his shoulders, knees, legs, feet, and hands. His belly is off white. You can draw him on a Lily pad like I did or on a rock or on a throne like the frog prince.

How to draw a Viking Ship worksheet for the young artists.

Thank You!

Some printers work better with a PDF format. To print in PDF, CLICK HERE

If you like this project, you might want to see how to draw a pirate ship.

Remember to draw the Viking ship large in the center of the paper. Use a light touch with a hard pencil, so when you draw over it in marker, the pencil will be easy to erase. Start with the shapes and work from the outline of the ship to the interior details. You can use coins or jar lids to draw perfect circles for when you are starting the rough draft of the Viking ship.

You don't have to draw it just like I did. Don't draw the Vikings until the end and keep them simple; remember they had long hair and beards, so you can cover a lot up. Color the sail with red stripes. The ship's hull could be brown or gray-brown; the shields were made of wood and painted different designs, but I left that up to you. Use contrasting colors to darken in the shadows. I didn't draw this with attention to the shadows since it was a complicated drawing, but you can figure out where you want the shadows, like under the shields or the hull of the ship.

Don't forget the background; you can put your Viking ship at sea with a blue sky or in a bay with a village in the background. Enjoy!

PRINTABLE LESSON NOTES

This project is a little more complicated since it has a structure in a forest.  The arched stone bridge makes a great contrast to the woods, both in shape and texture.

Always start with the horizon, but here we are under the trees, so there is no normal horizon, but I added the light at the edge of the woods and the bushes. You would not put the focus or point of interest in the center, but this time, it works. Draw the bridge as two arches, then draw the "S" curve of the creek with two big "S"s. Sketch the rocks and the tree trunks for the front trees lightly.

Develop the foreground by adding the texture of leaves on the ground. Create shadows and roughness on the rocks with jagged strokes with your pencil. Shade and texture the tree trunks and add leaves.

The bridge is foreground so add stones and shading. Make the stones different shapes. Draw them lightly with a 2b pencil and after they look good, go over them with a darker pencil like a 4 or 6.

Keep the background light by only using a 2b or HB pencil. Don't put in a lot of details in the background. Just suggest trees and bushes with a few outlines.

Build up the foreground with 4b pencils and more details and more leaves. Put a shadow under the bridge and leave the rest of the creek alone, so it is white.

Take your time. A drawing like this can take hours, but it will be beautiful when you are done.

I offer these how-to-draw worksheets for free, but your support will help me keep it going on.  Thank you.

How to draw an attacking owl - a drawing skillbuilder

This is a free printable How To Draw An Attacking Owl lesson and worksheet.

It is the perfect project if you can't draw a straight line because there are hardly any straight lines.

How to draw an attacking owl.

Sometimes it takes me hours but I create these how to draw worksheets but I do it so that I can give back because I believe that when you have been given a gift it is so you can be a gift to others, and I hope these worksheets are a means of blessing to you. You are welcome to print as many as you like.

Thank you!

Some printers work better with a PDF format. To print in PDF CLICK HERE.

I start with an outline made up of the basic shapes of circle, triangle, diamond curved line.

BEGINNINGS
The head is a large circle with two smaller circles for the cheeks. The body starts out as a diamond shape. The wings are two curved lines like upside-down rainbows a smaller one on the top by the shoulders and the large one starting at the hip and going up and out above the head, use slightly curved lines to connect these across the top.  If the wings are small it will look like a baby owl chick to make the owl looker older and more awesome make the wings bigger. The tail starts as a large triangle.

DEVELOPING FORM
After getting this rough drawing right start drawing the details. The eyes are circles, the ears are triangles, the open beak is a diamond. For the feathers, I divide the wings up in about seven sections and use large circles to start the end of the feathers. The lines of the feathers will all point to the beak if they went that far. Turn the tail into feathers the same way use four lines to divide the triangle into five feathers, then use circles to round off the ends.

DETAILS
The talons are the hardest and it would be a good idea to practice on a separate paper a few times before you draw them on the picture. The talons are bony so draw the three separate circles for the knuckles that are at the base of the claws, and one for the back claw.  The palm of the talons have bones in it so draw three connected circles halfway between the top and bottom claws, connect all the claws with lines that curve inward. The claws are hooked lines make them point outward it looks more threatening that way.

There are many different types of owls with different coloring and sizes, so if yours don't look just like you want it to don't worry it may be one of those other owls and you will probably find one somewhere just like yours.

How to Draw a Warrior Dwarf. A Project for a Young Artist

This is a free printable drawing worksheet for how to draw a warrior dwarf.

This is an easy drawing project for the artist of any age.
This is a project that many young artists will enjoy drawing.

This can be used by parents and teachers in class or at home. It can be an extra activity to fill in time or sent home as an extra project.

If you have problems printing see the "HOW TO PRINT" tab above.

How to draw a dwarf warrior
PRINTABLE NOTES

This Dwarf is not hard to draw, and if you keep adding little touches, it can be a cool picture. Being a fantasy dwarf, if you make any mistakes, no one can tell because that is maybe how it is supposed to be

I start with an outline of the Dwarf.  Since he is a fantasy, you don't have to worry about proper body proportions and dimensions. The proportions for a dwarf are different; using the head as a measure, the Dwarf stands about four heads tall. I use blocky squares to create an outline of the body and then go over them to develop the drawing.

The head is larger than usual, but the eyes are still halfway between the top of the head and the chin. I draw a faint line down the center of the face to keep everything in the right places. The eyebrows are bushy on the top and smooth underneath. I gave him white eyebrows because I thought he was getting too dark.
The nose is pudgy; I draw it as three circles, one big in the center and two smaller ones on the sides, then I shade them until everything looks right.

The mouth is easy since his big mustache covers the upper lip. I make the lower lip by drawing two circles, one next to the other, then connect them with a wavy upper curved line, then I shade underneath it.

He is an older dwarf, and I gave him wrinkles around the eyes.  The eyes are large because I think dwarfs live in mines, so they need big eyes. Start with the circles and then draw the eyelids over them.

You may need to practice the hands on a separate paper and even trace them onto the final project. The hands are really a few short lines. Don't forget to put the shiny spot in early, so you don't color over it.
I gave him a wooden shield and a battle-ax, but you can add different props like a sword or lance or club or a cooking pot. He is a warrior, so I put a few dents in his helmet.

Don't make the boots too black; use gray for most of it and add a few touches of black for the shape.
Draw the fur lightly using the pencil to make swift sweeps out and away from the top of the boots; as you sweep the pencil out and away, lift it up, so the line gets thinner as it moves.
I did an illustration where I put my Dwarf in a forest world, but you can create your own world, maybe a cave or volcano or pub; it is up to you. Have fun.

Watercolor painting of a Warrior Dwarf

I did this illustration in watercolor. It took about three hours, and I really enjoyed painting it. The only problem was that my son says it is not a dwarf, but it is a lawn gnome.

How to Draw A Penguin Free Worksheet

If you have problems printing this see the how to print tab above for some suggestions.

Start with a #2 pencil and lightly draw 2 circles for the body, the bottom circle should be a little larger than the top. Draw a small circle for the head.
Connect the circle to make the beginning of the outline.

The top and bottom need to be flat (it might look like a mutant peanut).
Erase the extra lines.

Add triangles for the beak and the feet. Round off the feet slightly and make three slight arches for the webbed toes.

The wings are the hardest. Draw them lightly and go over them with a darker pencil when you get them right.

Add the eye and shading.

There are many species of penguins, I have drawn the black foot penguin it is smaller than the emperor and has a shorter beak.

Illustration for how to draw a penguin

In my example, I used felt markers for the black and the grays and colored pencils for the sky and ice. I thought it was too black and white so I added the blue sky. I put some rose, pink, lavender, and violet to the ice to give it more color. I just filled in broad areas with color without details so that the focus will be on Penny the Penguin.

Printable notes.

This is easy to draw using some basic shapes and a ruler for straight lines. The neat thing about a country cottage is they are often old and lean a little bit, so if the lines are not straight, it is OK; even a good thing because it will look like a real cottage that has been in the forest for a long time and about to fall over a little bit. (Somewhere, there is a cottage about to fall over; you might be drawing it and not even know it).

Remember the perspective, things get smaller as they go any distance, so use a vanishing point. That is the point far away from where the lines would appear to touch if they continued. I tried to illustrate this in the project paper below. If you pay attention to this rule, your cottage will look more realistic. If the vanishing point is too low, the cottage looks like you are looking down on it from a hill, or if it is too high, it looks like you are looking up at it from below. Put the vanishing point just a little below the center of the house, and it seems almost normal.

Draw the basic outline first, then look everything over and make any corrections. Now decide where windows and doors and things are going to be. Just outline them and when you have all the ideas in place, add the extra details like shutters or ivy, or hinges. These things are primarily rectangles and triangles.

Add extras like ivy crawling up the side of the house or a brick half wall at the bottom. Do not draw every brick in the chimney or every shingle on the roof, just enough to tell the story of bricks and shingles. For the roof shingles, draw the capital letter "L" all over the place, and it will look like shingles. For the stone around the bottom half of the wall, I draw each stone differently- it is easy to draw circles but boring, so keep changing the shapes and leave a little space between them. The ivy leaves are shaped like hearts and upside-down teardrops. Put a fence in front of your drawing by drawing lots of skinny rectangles.

The secret to this project is to take your time and enjoy the project. Add things like gardens, trees, a fence, a birdbath, or a swing.

Add trees behind and around the house and bushes.

Below I did an example with some watercolors; it took about 2 and one-half hours. Take your time, and you will be happy with the results.  I sometimes take breaks or work on it for a little each day for a few days. It is worth it to have a finished painting you are proud of.

How to draw a Pirate with an Eye patch for the youg artisist

This is a free printable drawing worksheet, How to Draw A Pirate With One Eye.

It is a fun portrait to draw; since he has an earring, a patch, and only one tooth people will remember this drawing after you show it to them and they will tell others about it.

If you have problems making the image file print then CLICK HERE to visit the how to print page for some suggestions or try the updated link below.

CLICK HERE for a universal portable format.

BEGINNING
I start most of my portraits with a circle and a large letter "U" for the jaw. It sometimes looks like a skull when I do this. I recommend a light line up and down the middle to keep the face in balance, and some lines across to mark off the eyes nose mouth. The lines for the eyes and nose will become the top and bottom of the ears. I use very few lines to indicate the face at this point; think of it like a map.

ASSESSMENT
Now set your pencil down and look at what you have drawn so far- now is the time to fix any problems.

DEVELOP FORM
He is bald so keep the top of the head clean. (I was going to put a bandanna on his head but changed my mind but you can try it and see if it works.)

The nose is three circles, a large one in the middle and two smaller ones on the sides. I use a lot of shading in drawing faces so shade the underside of the nose but not too dark. I drew circles for the eyes, even though I am going to hide one under the eye-patch I still drew the circle so I have things in the right place. His eyebrows are bushy to make up for his shiny bald head.

The mouth is open to show his one tooth. When people smile or talk their lips spread out and become thinner so I just did a shadow for the top lip and a little shadow for the bottom.

DETAILS
I save the fun stuff for last so last I put in the earring, the eye-patch, and the bandanna around his neck.
